Naşterea lui Isaac
21 Domnul a avut grijă de Sara, după cum a spus şi a făcut pentru ea ceea ce a promis. 2 Sara a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Avraam un fiu la bătrâneţe, la vremea la care Dumnezeu îi spusese. 3 Avraam i-a pus fiului său, pe care i-l născuse Sara, numele Isaac[a]. 4 Avraam l-a circumcis pe fiul său Isaac la vârsta de opt zile, aşa cum i-a poruncit Dumnezeu. 5 Avraam avea o sută de ani când s-a născut fiul său Isaac. 6 Sara a zis: „Dumnezeu m-a făcut să râd şi oricine va auzi despre acest lucru va râde împreună cu mine. 7 Cine i-ar fi spus lui Avraam că Sara va alăpta copii? a continuat ea. Totuşi i-am născut un fiu la bătrâneţe.“
Alungarea lui Agar şi a lui Ismael
8 Copilul a crescut şi a fost înţărcat. În ziua în care Isaac a fost înţărcat, Avraam a dat un ospăţ mare. 9 Dar Sara l-a văzut pe fiul egiptencei Agar, pe care aceasta i-l născuse lui Avraam, bătându-şi joc[b] 10 şi i-a spus lui Avraam: „Alung-o pe această sclavă şi pe fiul ei, pentru că fiul acestei sclave nu va moşteni împreună cu fiul meu Isaac!“ 11 Acest lucru l-a tulburat mult pe Avraam, pentru că-l avea în vedere pe fiul său. 12 Dar Dumnezeu i-a spus lui Avraam: „Nu fi tulburat din cauza băiatului şi a sclavei tale; ascult-o pe Sara în tot ce îţi spune, pentru că prin Isaac îşi va primi numele sămânţa[c] ta. 13 Cât despre fiul sclavei tale, îl voi face şi pe el un neam, pentru că şi el este urmaşul tău.“ 14 Avraam s-a sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, a luat nişte pâine şi un burduf cu apă şi i le-a dat lui Agar, punându-i-le pe umăr; i-a dat şi copilul şi a izgonit-o. Ea a plecat şi a rătăcit în pustia Beer-Şeba. 15 Când apa din burduf s-a terminat, Agar a pus copilul sub unul dintre tufişuri, 16 apoi s-a dus şi a şezut singură mai departe, ca la o aruncătură de arc, pentru că se gândea: „Să nu văd moartea copilului.“ Şezând acolo, ea[d] a început să plângă. 17 Dumnezeu a auzit glasul copilului, iar Îngerul lui Dumnezeu a strigat-o pe Agar din cer şi i-a zis: „Ce se întâmplă, Agar? Nu te teme, pentru că Dumnezeu a auzit glasul băiatului din locul în care este. 18 Scoală-te, ridică băiatul şi ţine-l de mână, pentru că voi face din el un neam mare.“ 19 Apoi Dumnezeu i-a deschis ochii, iar ea a văzut o fântână cu apă. S-a dus, a umplut burduful cu apă şi i-a dat băiatului să bea. 20 Dumnezeu a fost cu băiatul, iar el a crescut, a locuit în pustie şi a ajuns arcaş. 21 A locuit în pustia Paran, iar mama lui i-a luat o soţie din ţara Egiptului.
Legământul dintre Avraam şi Abimelek
22 În vremea aceea, Abimelek, împreună cu Pihol, conducătorul oştirii sale, i-a spus lui Avraam:
– Dumnezeu este cu tine în tot ceea ce faci; 23 jură-mi acum pe Dumnezeul tău că nu mă vei înşela nici pe mine, nici pe copiii mei, nici pe urmaşii mei, ci că, aşa cum eu am arătat bunăvoinţă faţă de tine, tot aşa vei arăta şi tu faţă de mine şi faţă de ţara în care locuieşti ca străin.
24 – Jur, i-a răspuns Avraam.
25 Dar Avraam i s-a plâns lui Abimelek cu privire la o fântână cu apă, pe care slujitorii acestuia o luaseră în stăpânire.
26 Abimelek i-a răspuns: „Nu ştiu cine a făcut acest lucru. Tu nu mi-ai spus, iar eu nu am auzit despre aceasta până acum.“ 27 Atunci Avraam a luat oi şi boi şi i le-a dat lui Abimelek; apoi cei doi au încheiat un legământ. 28 Avraam a pus deoparte şapte mieluşele din turmă, 29 iar Abimelek l-a întrebat:
– Ce ai de gând să faci cu aceste şapte mieluşele pe care le-ai pus deoparte?
30 – Primeşte-le ca o mărturie pentru mine că eu am săpat această fântână, i-a răspuns Avraam.
31 De aceea acel loc a fost numit Beer-Şeba[e], pentru că amândoi au depus acolo un jurământ. 32 După ce au încheiat legământul la Beer-Şeba, Abimelek şi Pihol, conducătorul oştiri sale, s-au sculat şi s-au întors în ţara filistenilor. 33 Avraam a plantat un tamarisc în Beer-Şeba şi a chemat acolo Numele Domnului, Dumnezeul cel Veşnic[f]. 34 El a locuit ca străin în ţara filistenilor multă vreme.

The Birth of Isaac
21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(B) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son(C) to Abraham in his old age,(D) at the very time God had promised him.(E) 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[a](F) to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,(G) as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old(H) when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,(I) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”(J)
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned,(K) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham(L) was mocking,(M) 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman(N) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”(O)
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.(P) 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned.(Q) 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation(R) also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.(S) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.(T)
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.(U)
17 God heard the boy crying,(V) and the angel of God(W) called to Hagar from heaven(X) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;(Y) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.(Z)”
19 Then God opened her eyes(AA) and she saw a well of water.(AB) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy(AC) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran,(AD) his mother got a wife for him(AE) from Egypt.
The Treaty at Beersheba
22 At that time Abimelek(AF) and Phicol the commander of his forces(AG) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(AH) 23 Now swear(AI) to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants.(AJ) Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”(AK)
24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.(AL) 26 But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.(AM) 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness(AN) that I dug this well.(AO)”
31 So that place was called Beersheba,[d](AP) because the two men swore an oath(AQ) there.
32 After the treaty(AR) had been made at Beersheba,(AS) Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces(AT) returned to the land of the Philistines.(AU) 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree(AV) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,(AW) the Eternal God.(AX) 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines(AY) for a long time.

21 Entonces el Señor visitó a Sara como había dicho(A), e hizo el Señor por Sara como había prometido[a]. 2 Y Sara concibió y dio a luz un hijo a Abraham(B) en su vejez, en el tiempo señalado que Dios le había dicho(C). 3 Y Abraham le puso el nombre de Isaac(D) al hijo que le nació, que le dio a luz Sara. 4 Y circuncidó Abraham a su hijo Isaac a los ocho días, como Dios le había mandado(E). 5 Abraham tenía cien años cuando le nació su hijo Isaac(F). 6 Y dijo Sara: Dios me ha hecho reír[b](G); cualquiera que lo oiga se reirá conmigo[c]. 7 Y añadió: ¿Quién le hubiera dicho a Abraham que Sara amamantaría hijos? Pues bien, le he dado a luz un hijo en su vejez(H).
Agar e Ismael expulsados
8 Y el niño creció y fue destetado, y Abraham hizo un gran banquete el día que Isaac fue destetado. 9 Y Sara vio al hijo que Agar la egipcia(I) le había dado a luz a Abraham burlándose de[d] su hijo Isaac[e](J), 10 y dijo a Abraham: Echa fuera a esta sierva y a su hijo, porque el hijo de esta sierva no ha de ser heredero juntamente con mi hijo Isaac[f](K). 11 Y el asunto angustió a Abraham en gran manera[g](L) por tratarse de su hijo. 12 Mas Dios dijo a Abraham: No te angusties[h] por el muchacho ni por tu sierva; presta atención a[i] todo lo que Sara te diga, porque por Isaac será llamada tu descendencia[j](M). 13 Y también del hijo de la sierva haré una nación(N), por ser tu descendiente[k]. 14 Se levantó, pues, Abraham muy de mañana, tomó pan y un odre de agua y los dio a Agar poniéndoselos sobre el hombro, y le dio el muchacho y la despidió. Y ella se fue y anduvo errante por el desierto de Beerseba. 15 Y el agua en el odre se acabó, y ella dejó[l] al muchacho debajo de uno de los arbustos, 16 y ella fue y se sentó enfrente, como a un tiro de arco de distancia, porque dijo: Que no vea yo morir al[m] niño. Y se sentó enfrente y alzó su voz y lloró(O). 17 Y oyó Dios la voz del muchacho que lloraba(P); y el ángel de Dios llamó a Agar desde el cielo, y le dijo: ¿Qué tienes, Agar? No temas(Q), porque Dios ha oído la voz del muchacho en donde está. 18 Levántate, alza al muchacho y sostenlo con tu mano; porque yo haré de él una gran nación(R). 19 Entonces Dios abrió los ojos de ella(S), y vio un pozo de agua(T); y fue y llenó el odre de agua y dio de beber al muchacho. 20 Y Dios estaba con el muchacho(U), que creció y habitó en el desierto y se hizo arquero. 21 Y habitó en el desierto de Parán(V), y su madre tomó para él una mujer de la tierra de Egipto.
Pacto entre Abraham y Abimelec
22 Aconteció por aquel tiempo que Abimelec, con[n] Ficol, comandante de su ejército(W), habló a Abraham, diciendo: Dios está contigo(X) en todo lo que haces; 23 ahora pues, júrame aquí por Dios que no obrarás falsamente conmigo, ni con mi descendencia, ni con mi posteridad(Y), sino que conforme a la bondad que te he mostrado, así me mostrarás a mí y a la tierra en la cual has residido. 24 Y Abraham dijo: Yo lo juro. 25 Pero Abraham se quejó[o] a Abimelec a causa de un pozo de agua del cual los siervos de Abimelec se habían apoderado(Z). 26 Y Abimelec dijo: No sé quién haya hecho esto, ni tú me lo habías hecho saber, ni yo lo había oído hasta[p] hoy. 27 Y Abraham tomó ovejas y vacas y se los dio a Abimelec. Y los dos hicieron un pacto(AA). 28 Entonces Abraham puso aparte siete corderas del rebaño. 29 Y Abimelec dijo a Abraham: ¿Qué significan estas siete corderas que has puesto aparte? 30 Y él respondió: Tomarás estas siete corderas de mi mano para que esto me sirva de testimonio(AB) de que yo cavé este pozo. 31 Por lo cual llamó aquel lugar Beerseba[q](AC), porque allí juraron los dos. 32 Hicieron, pues, un pacto en Beerseba; y se levantó Abimelec con Ficol, comandante de su ejército, y regresaron a la tierra de los filisteos. 33 Y Abraham plantó un tamarisco en Beerseba, y allí invocó el nombre del Señor(AD), el Dios eterno(AE). 34 Y peregrinó Abraham en la tierra de los filisteos por muchos días(AF).

21 And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.
7 And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.
8 And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.
12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.
24 And Abraham said, I will swear.
25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.
26 And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.
28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
30 And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well.
31 Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them.
32 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.
34 And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines' land many days.
