Genesis 8
The Message
8 1-3 Then God turned his attention to Noah and all the wild animals and farm animals with him on the ship. God caused the wind to blow and the floodwaters began to go down. The underground springs were shut off, the windows of Heaven closed and the rain quit. Inch by inch the water lowered. After 150 days the worst was over.
4-6 On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ship landed on the Ararat mountain range. The water kept going down until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains came into view. After forty days Noah opened the window that he had built into the ship.
7-9 He sent out a raven; it flew back and forth waiting for the floodwaters to dry up. Then he sent a dove to check on the flood conditions, but it couldn’t even find a place to perch—water still covered the Earth. Noah reached out and caught it, brought it back into the ship.
10-11 He waited seven more days and sent out the dove again. It came back in the evening with a freshly picked olive leaf in its beak. Noah knew that the flood was about finished.
12 He waited another seven days and sent the dove out a third time. This time it didn’t come back.
13-14 In the six-hundred-first year of Noah’s life, on the first day of the first month, the flood had dried up. Noah opened the hatch of the ship and saw dry ground. By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the Earth was completely dry.
15-17 God spoke to Noah: “Leave the ship, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives. And take all the animals with you, the whole menagerie of birds and mammals and crawling creatures, all that swarming extravagance of life, so they can reproduce and flourish on the Earth.”
18-19 Noah disembarked with his sons and wife and his sons’ wives. Then all the animals, crawling creatures, birds—every creature on the face of the Earth—left the ship family by family.
20-21 Noah built an altar to God. He selected clean animals and birds from every species and offered them as burnt offerings on the altar. God smelled the sweet fragrance and thought to himself, “I’ll never again curse the ground because of people. I know they have this bent toward evil from an early age, but I’ll never again kill off everything living as I’ve just done.
22 For as long as Earth lasts,
planting and harvest, cold and heat,
Summer and winter, day and night
will never stop.”

8 하나님께서는 노아와 그와 함께 배에 들어간 들짐승과 집짐승들을 기억하셨다. 하나님께서 땅 위로 바람이 불게 하시니 물이 줄어들기 시작하였다.
2 이제 땅 밑에서 솟아오르던 샘이 닫혔다. 그리고 하늘의 홍수문도 닫히니 하늘에서 내리던 비가 그쳤다. 3 물이 땅에서 꾸준히 줄어들었다. 백오십 일이 지나자 눈에 띌 만큼 줄어들었다. 4 일곱째 달 십칠 일에 노아의 배는 아라랏 산맥[a] 꼭대기에 얹히게 되었다. 5 물은 열째 달까지 계속 줄어들었고 열째 달 초하루가 되자 산꼭대기들이 드러나기 시작하였다.
6 사십 일이 더 지나서 노아는 그가 만든 배의 창문을 열었다. 7 그리고 까마귀 한 마리를 내보냈다. 까마귀는 땅 위에서 물이 다 잦아들 때까지 이리저리 날아다녔다. 8 노아는 땅 위의 물이 줄어들었는지 알아보려고 이번에는 비둘기 한 마리를 내보냈다.
9 그러나 비둘기는 앉아서 쉴 곳을 찾지 못해 배 안에 있는 노아에게 돌아왔다. 온 땅이 여전히 물 밑에 잠겨 있었기 때문이다. 노아는 손을 뻗어 비둘기를 붙잡아 배 안으로 끌어들였다.
10 노아는 이레를 더 기다렸다가 그 비둘기를 다시 내보냈다. 11 비둘기는 그날 저녁 그에게로 돌아왔다. 그러나 그 비둘기의 부리에는 갓 딴 올리브 이파리가 물려 있었다. 노아는 물이 땅에서 많이 줄어든 것을 알았다. 12 그는 다시 이레를 더 기다린 뒤에 그 비둘기를 날려 보냈다. 그러나 그 비둘기는 다시 노아에게 돌아오지 않았다.
13 노아가 육백 한 살이 되던 해 첫째 달의 초하루가 되자 땅 위에서 물기가 사라졌다. 그래서 노아가 배의 뚜껑을 열고 바깥을 내다보니 땅바닥이 마르고 있었다. 14 둘째 달 이십칠 일이 되자 땅이 완전히 말랐다.
15 그때에 하나님께서 노아에게 말씀하셨다. 16 “너는 아내와 아들들과 며느리들을 데리고 배에서 나오너라. 17 너와 함께 있던 새와 집짐승과 길짐승을 모두 데리고 나오너라. 그렇게 하여 그들이 새끼를 많이 낳아 온 땅 위에 널리 퍼지게 하여라.”
18 그리하여 노아는 아내와 아들들과 며느리들을 데리고 배에서 나왔다. 19 모든 짐승과 길짐승과 새와 땅 위에 사는 모든 것이 종류대로 배에서 나왔다.
20 노아는 주 앞에 제단을 쌓았다. 그리고 깨끗한 짐승들과 새들[b] 가운데서 몇 마리씩 골라 제단 위에 이들을 불살라 바쳤다.
21 주께서 그 향긋한 냄새를 맡으시고 속으로 다짐하셨다. “내가 다시는 사람들 때문에 땅을 저주하지 않겠다. 사람의 생각은 어릴 때부터 악하기 마련이다. 그러나 그렇다고 하여 이번에 한 것과 같이 내가 지은 모든 살아 있는 것을 없애 버리지는 않겠다.
22 땅이 있는 한
뿌리고 거두는 때
더위와 추위
여름과 겨울
낮과 밤이
그치지 않을 것이다.”

Noah’s Deliverance
8 Then God (A)remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. (B)And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2 (C)The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also (D)stopped, and (E)the rain from heaven was restrained. 3 And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end (F)of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. 4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.
6 So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened (G)the window of the ark which he had made. 7 Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth. 8 He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. 9 But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself. 10 And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark. 11 Then the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth. 12 So he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.
13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry. 14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried.
15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, (H)you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds and cattle and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may abound on the earth, and (I)be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, and whatever creeps on the earth, according to their families, went out of the ark.
God’s Covenant with Creation
20 Then Noah built an (J)altar to the Lord, and took of (K)every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered (L)burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And the Lord smelled (M)a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again (N)curse the ground for man’s sake, although the (O)imagination[a] of man’s heart is evil from his youth; (P)nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
22 “While the earth (Q)remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
Winter and summer,
And (R)day and night
Shall not cease.”
