The Generations of Noah

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a (A)righteous man, [a](B)blameless among those in his generations; Noah (C)walked with God. 10 And Noah [b]became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was (D)corrupt before God, and the earth was (E)filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for (F)all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, “(G)The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and you shall [c]cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 Now this is how you shall make it: the length of the ark [d]300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 You shall make a [e]window for the ark, and complete it to one [f]cubit from [g]the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 As for Me, behold (H)I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall breathe its last. 18 But I will establish (I)My covenant with you; and (J)you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 (K)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 (L)Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of all (M)food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.” 22 (N)Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.

Noah and the Flood

Then Yahweh said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be (O)righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take [h]with you of every (P)clean animal [i]by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean, two, a male and his female; also of the birds of the [j]sky, [k]by sevens, male and female, to keep their seed alive on the face of all the earth. For after (Q)seven more days, I will send rain on the earth (R)forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land (S)every living thing that I have made.” (T)And Noah did according to all that Yahweh had commanded him.

Now Noah was (U)six hundred years old when the flood of water [l]came upon the earth. Then (V)Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood. (W)Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, [m]by twos they came to Noah into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 Now it happened after (X)the seven days, that the water of the flood [n]came upon the earth. 11 In the (Y)six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day all (Z)the fountains of the great deep split open, and the [o]floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 (AA)Then the rain [p]came upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On this very day (AB)Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after [q]their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind—every [r]fowl, every winged creature. 15 So they came to Noah into the ark, (AC)by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. 16 And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and Yahweh closed it behind him.

17 Then the flood [s]came upon the earth for (AD)forty days, and the water multiplied and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. 18 And the water prevailed and multiplied greatly upon the earth, and the ark went on the [t]surface of the water. 19 And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains under all the heavens were covered. 20 The water prevailed [u]fifteen cubits higher, (AE)and the mountains were covered. 21 (AF)And all flesh that [v]moved on the earth breathed its last, that is birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, as well as all mankind. 22 All (AG)in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life—of all that was on the dry land—died. 23 Thus He blotted out [w]every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the [x]sky, and they were blotted out from the earth; and only (AH)Noah remained, and those that were with him in the ark. 24 (AI)And the water prevailed upon the earth 150 days.

The Water Dries Up

Then (AJ)God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and (AK)God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. Also (AL)the fountains of the deep and the [y]floodgates of the sky were closed, and (AM)the rain from the sky was restrained; and the water receded from the earth, going forth and returning, and at the end (AN)of 150 days the water decreased. In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, (AO)the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. Now the water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared.

Then it happened at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the (AP)window of the ark which he had made; and he sent out a raven, and it went out flying back and forth until the water was dried up [z]from the earth. Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; but the dove found no resting place for the sole of its foot, so it returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the [aa]surface of all the earth. Then he stretched out his hand and took it and brought it into the ark to himself. 10 Then he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 And the dove came to him toward [ab]evening, and behold, in its [ac]beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. 12 Then he waited yet another seven days and sent out (AQ)the dove; but it did not return to him again.

13 Now it happened in the (AR)six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up [ad]from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the [ae]surface of the ground was dried up. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may (AS)swarm on the earth, and that they may be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out [af]by their families from the ark.

These are the generations[a] of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 And the earth was corrupted before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth was filled with violence because of them. Now, look, I am going to destroy them along with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood; you must make the ark with rooms, then[b] you must cover it with pitch, inside and outside. 15 And this is how you must make it: the length of the ark, three hundred cubits; its width fifty cubits; its height, thirty cubits. 16 You must make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above.[c] And as for the door of the ark, you must put it in its side. You must make it with a lower, second, and a third deck.

17 And I, behold, I am about to bring the flood waters over the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under the heaven;[d] everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 And I will establish my covenant with you, and you must go into the ark—you, and your sons, and your wife, and the wives of your sons with you. 19 And of every living thing, from all flesh, you must bring two from every kind into the ark to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 From the birds according to their[e] kind, and from the animals according to their[f] kind, from every creeping thing on the ground according to its[g] kind—two from every kind shall come to you to keep them alive. 21 And as for you, take for yourself from every kind of food that is eaten. And you must gather it to yourself. And it shall be for you and for them for food.” 22 And Noah did according to all that God commanded him; thus he did.

Then[h] Yahweh said to Noah, “Go—you and all your household—into the ark, for I have seen you are righteous before me in this generation. From all the clean animals you must take for yourself seven pairs,[i] a male and its mate. And from the animals that are not clean you must take two, a male and its mate, as well as from the birds of heaven[j] seven pairs,[k] male and female, to keep their kind alive[l] on the face of the earth. For within seven days[m] I will send rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will blot out all the living creatures that I have made from upon the face of the ground.” And Noah did according to all that Yahweh commanded him.

The Flood

Noah was six hundred years old[n] when[o] the flood waters came upon the earth. And Noah and his sons and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, and of animals which are not clean, and of the birds, and everything that creeps upon the ground, two of each[p] went to Noah, into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And it happened that after seven days the waters of the flood came over the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on that day all the springs of the great deep were split open, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain came upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On this same day, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and the wife of Noah and the three wives of his sons with them, went into the ark, 14 they and all the living creatures according to their[q] kind, and all the domesticated animals according to their[r] kind, and all the creatures that creep upon the earth according to their[s] kind, all the birds according to their[t] kind, every winged creature. 15 And they came to Noah to the ark, two of each,[u] from every living thing in which was the breath of life. 16 And those that came, male and female, of every living thing, came as God had commanded him. And Yahweh shut the door behind him. 17 And the flood came forty days and forty nights upon the earth. And the waters increased, and lifted the ark, and it rose up from the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth. And the ark went upon the surface[v] of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed overwhelmingly[w] upon the earth, and they covered all the high mountains which were under the entire heaven.[x] 20 The waters swelled fifteen cubits above the mountains, covering them.[y] 21 And every living thing that moved on the earth perished—the birds, and the domesticated animals, and the wild animals, and everything that swarmed on the earth, and all humankind. 22 Everything in whose nostrils was the breath of life,[z] among all that was on dry land, died. 23 And he[aa] blotted out every living thing upon the surface of the ground, from humankind, to animals, to creeping things, and to the birds of heaven;[ab] they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained. 24 And the waters prevailed over the earth one hundred and fifty days.

The Flood Subsides

And God remembered Noah and all the wild animals, and all the domesticated animals that were with him in the ark. And God caused a wind to blow[ac] over the earth, and the waters subsided. And the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens[ad] were closed, and the rain from the heavens[ae] was restrained. And the waters receded from the earth gradually,[af] and the waters abated at the end of one hundred and fifty days. And the ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. And the waters continued to recede[ag] to the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared. And it happened that at the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made. And he sent out a[ah] raven;[ai] it went to and fro[aj] until the waters were dried up from upon the earth. And he sent out a[ak] dove[al] to see whether the waters had subsided from upon the ground. But the dove did not find a resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned to him into the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the earth. And he stretched out his hand and took her, and brought her to himself into the ark. 10 And he waited another seven days, and again he sent out[am] the dove from the ark. 11 And the dove came to him in the evening,[an] and behold, a freshly-picked olive tree leaf was in her mouth. And Noah knew that the waters had subsided from upon the earth. 12 And he waited seven more days,[ao] and he sent out the dove. But it did not return again to him. 13 And it happened that, in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters dried up from upon the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked. And behold, the face of the ground was dried up. 14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 And God spoke to Noah, saying: 16 “Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you all the living things which are with you, from all the living creatures—birds, and animals, and everything that creeps on the earth, and let them swarm on the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So[ap] Noah went out, with[aq] his sons and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him. 19 Every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, and everything that moves upon the earth, according to its families, went out from the ark.
