⁶ the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth,^(A) and He was grieved in His heart.

⁷ Then the Lord said, “I will wipe off from the face of the earth mankind, whom I created, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.”

¹⁴ So the Lord relented^(A) concerning the disaster He said He would bring on His people.

¹⁸ Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for the Israelites, the Lord was with^(A) him and saved the people from the power of their enemies while the judge was still alive.^[a] The Lord was moved to pity whenever they groaned because of those who were oppressing and afflicting them.

³⁵ Even to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul.^(A) Samuel mourned for Saul,^(B) and the Lord regretted He had made Saul king over Israel.

24 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel again, and He stirred up David against them to say: “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”^(A)
