Jacob’s Burial
50 When Jacob died, Joseph ·hugged [L fell on the face of] his father and cried over him and kissed him. 2 He commanded the doctors who served him to ·prepare his father’s body [embalm his father], so the doctors ·prepared Jacob’s body to be buried [L embalmed Israel; C another name for Jacob; 32:28]. 3 It took the doctors forty days to ·prepare his body [embalm him] (the usual time it took). And the Egyptians ·had a time of sorrow for Jacob that lasted [L wept over him for] seventy days.
4 When this time of ·sorrow had ended [L weeping passed], Joseph spoke to ·the king’s officers [L household of Pharaoh] and said, “If ·you think well of me [L I have found grace in your eyes], please ·tell this to the king [L speak now in the ear of Pharaoh]: 5 ‘When my father was near death, ·I made a promise to him [L my father made me swear] that I would bury him in a cave in the land of Canaan, in a burial place that he cut out for himself. So please let me go and bury my father, and then I will return.’ ”
6 ·The king [L Pharaoh] answered, “·Keep your promise. Go [L As he made you swear, go] and bury your father.”
7 So Joseph went to bury his father. All ·the king’s officers [L servants of Pharaoh], the elders of his ·court [L house], and all the elders of Egypt went with Joseph. 8 ·Everyone who lived with [L All the house of] Joseph and his brothers went with him, as well as ·everyone who lived with [L all the house of] his father. They left only their ·children [little ones], their flocks, and their herds in the land of Goshen [45:10]. 9 They went with Joseph in chariots and on horses. It was a very large ·group [camp].
10 When they came to ·the threshing floor of Atad [or Goren-ha-atad; or the threshing floor of the bramble], near the Jordan River, they ·cried loudly and bitterly for his father [L lamented there with a great and exceedingly strong lament]. Joseph’s time of ·sorrow [mourning] continued for seven days. 11 The people that lived in Canaan saw the ·sadness [mourning] at the threshing floor of Atad [or Goren-ha-atad; or threshing floor of the bramble] and said, “Those Egyptians are ·showing great sorrow [intense in their mourning]!” So now that place is named ·Sorrow of the Egyptians [or Abel-mizraim].
12 So Jacob’s sons did as their father commanded. 13 His sons carried ·his body [L him] to the land of Canaan and buried ·it [or him] in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre. Abraham had bought this cave and field from Ephron the Hittite to use as a burial ·place [site]. 14 After Joseph buried his father, he returned to Egypt, along with his brothers and everyone who had gone with him to bury his father.
The Brothers Fear Joseph
15 ·After Jacob [L The brothers of Joseph saw that their father had] died, ·Joseph’s brothers [L and they] said, “What if Joseph ·is still angry with [holds a grudge against] us? We did many wrong things to him. What if he plans to pay us back?” 16 So they ·sent a message to [instructed; commanded] Joseph that said, “Your father gave this command before he died. 17 He said to us, ‘You have done wrong and have sinned and done evil to Joseph. Tell Joseph to forgive you, his brothers.’ So now, Joseph, we beg you to forgive our wrong. We are the servants of the God of your father.” When Joseph received the message, he cried.
18 And his brothers went to him and bowed low before him and said, “We are your slaves.”
19 Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. ·Can I do what only God can do [Am I in the place of God]? 20 You meant ·to hurt [to harm; or evil against] me, but God ·turned your evil into [L meant it for] good to save the lives of many people, which is being done. 21 So don’t be afraid. I will take care of you and your ·children [little ones].” So Joseph ·comforted [consoled; reassured] his brothers and spoke kind words to them.
22 Joseph continued to live in Egypt with all ·his father’s family [L the house of his father]. ·He died when he was [L Joseph lived until he was] one hundred ten years old. 23 ·During Joseph’s life Ephraim had children and grandchildren [L Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation], and Joseph’s son Manasseh had a son named Makir. ·Joseph accepted Makir’s children as his own [L The children of Makir were born on his knees].
The Death of Joseph
24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will ·take care of [provide for] you. He will ·lead you out of [bring you up from] this land to the land he ·promised [swore] to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph had the sons of Israel ·make a promise [swear]. He said, “·Promise [Swear to] me that you will ·carry [bring up] my bones with you out of Egypt.”
26 Joseph died when he was one hundred ten years old. ·Doctors prepared his body for burial [L Doctors embalmed him], and then they put him in a coffin in Egypt.

Jacob’s Funeral and Joseph’s Remaining Time in Egypt
50 Then Joseph fell on the face of his father and wept upon him and kissed him. 2 And Joseph instructed his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Forty days were required for it,[a] for thus are the days required for[b] embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. 4 When the days of his weeping had passed, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die. In the tomb that I have hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan—there you must bury me.” So then, please let me go up and let me bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 Then Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father as he made you swear.” 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. And all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, went up with him, 8 with all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and the household of his father. They left only their little children and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 And there also went up with him chariots and horsemen. The company was very great. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which was beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful wailing. And he made a mourning ceremony for his father seven days. 11 And when the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, saw the mourning ceremony at the threshing floor of Atad they said, “This is a severe mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did to him just as he had instructed them. 13 And his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which field Abraham had bought as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite before[c] Mamre. 14 And after burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15 And when the brothers of Joseph saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hold a grudge against us and pay us back dearly for all the evil that we did to him.” 16 So they sent word to Joseph saying, “Your father commanded us before his death, saying, 17 “Thus you must say to Joseph, ‘O, please now forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did evil to you.’ So now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers went also and fell before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 Then Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, in order to do this—to keep many people alive—as it is today. 21 So then, do not be afraid. I myself will provide for you and your little ones. And he consoled them and spoke kindly[d] to them.
The Death of Joseph
22 So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and the house of his father. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. Moreover, the children of Makir, son of Manasseh, were born on the knees of Joseph. 24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will certainly visit you and bring you up from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall bring up my bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old. They embalmed him and he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Jacob’s Burial
50 When Jacob died, Joseph hugged his father and cried over him and kissed him. 2 He commanded the doctors who served him to prepare his father’s body. So the doctors prepared Jacob’s body to be buried. 3 It took the doctors 40 days to prepare his body. This was the usual time it took. And the Egyptians had a time of sorrow for Jacob. It lasted 70 days.
4 When this time of sorrow had ended, Joseph spoke to the king’s officers. He said, “If you think well of me, please tell this to the king: 5 ‘When my father was near death, I made a promise to him. I promised I would bury him in a cave in the land of Canaan. This is a burial place that he cut out for himself. So please let me go and bury my father. Then I will return.’”
6 The king answered, “Keep your promise. Go and bury your father.”
7 So Joseph went to bury his father. All the king’s officers, the elders of his court and all the elders of Egypt went with Joseph. 8 Everyone who lived with Joseph and his brothers went with him. And everyone who lived with his father also went. They left only their children, their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 Men in chariots and on horses also went with Joseph. It was a very large group.
10 They went to the threshing floor of Atad, east of the Jordan River. There they cried loudly and bitterly for Jacob, also called Israel. Joseph’s time of sorrow continued for seven days. 11 The people that lived in Canaan saw the sadness at the threshing floor of Atad. They said, “Those Egyptians are showing great sorrow!” So now that place is named Sorrow of the Egyptians.
12 So Jacob’s sons did what their father commanded. 13 They carried his body to the land of Canaan. They buried it in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre. Abraham had bought this cave and field from Ephron the Hittite. He bought the cave to use as a burial place. 14 After Joseph buried his father, he returned to Egypt. His brothers and everyone who had gone with him to bury his father also returned.
The Brothers Fear Joseph

24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will take care of you. He will lead you out of this land. He will lead you to the land he promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph had the sons of Israel make a promise. He said, “Promise me that you will carry my bones with you out of Egypt.”
26 Joseph died when he was 110 years old. Doctors prepared his body for burial. Then they put him in a coffin in Egypt.

50 (A) Då böjde Josef sig ner över sin fars ansikte och grät över honom och kysste honom. 2 Josef befallde läkarna han hade i sin tjänst att balsamera[a] hans far. Och läkarna balsamerade Israel. 3 Det tog fyrtio dagar, så lång tid tar en balsamering. Och egyptierna sörjde honom i sjuttio dagar[b].
4 När sorgedagarna efter honom var över sade Josef till faraos husfolk: ”Om jag har funnit nåd för era ögon, ber jag er säga dessa ord till farao: 5 (B) Min far har tagit ed av mig och sagt: När jag är död, så begrav mig i den grav som jag grävt åt mig i Kanaans land. Låt mig därför resa och begrava min far och sedan komma tillbaka.” 6 Farao svarade: ”Res dit och begrav din far enligt den ed som han tog av dig.”
7 Då reste Josef för att begrava sin far. Och faraos alla tjänare reste med honom, de äldste vid hans hov och alla de äldste i Egyptens land, 8 dessutom allt Josefs husfolk och hans bröder och hans fars husfolk. Bara sina små barn, sina får och sina kor lämnade de kvar i landet Goshen. 9 Både vagnar och ryttare reste tillsammans med honom, och det var en mycket stor skara.
10 När de kom till Goren-Haatad[c] på andra sidan Jordan höll de där en mycket stor och högtidlig dödsklagan, och han ordnade en sorgehögtid efter sin far i sju dagar. 11 När landets invånare kananeerna såg sorgehögtiden i Goren-Haatad sade de: ”Här har egyptierna en stor sorgehögtid.” Därför kallades platsen Abel-Misrajim[d]. Den ligger på andra sidan Jordan.
12 Jakobs söner gjorde med honom som han hade befallt dem. 13 (C) De förde honom till Kanaans land och begravde honom i grottan vid fältet i Makpela, den mark som Abraham hade köpt till gravplats av hetiten Efron mitt emot Mamre.
14 När Josef hade begravt sin far, vände han tillbaka till Egypten med sina bröder och alla som följt med honom för att begrava hans far.
Bröderna ber Josef om förlåtelse
15 När Josefs bröder såg att deras far var död, sade de: ”Tänk om Josef hyser agg mot oss och ger igen för allt det onda som vi gjort mot honom.” 16 Därför sände de bud till Josef och lät säga: ”Din far sade så här före sin död: 17 Så ska ni säga till Josef: Vi ber dig, förlåt dina bröder deras brott och synd, att de gjort så illa mot dig. Så förlåt nu den synd som din fars Guds tjänare har begått.” Josef grät när han fick deras hälsning.
18 Sedan kom också hans bröder och föll ner för honom och sade: ”Vi är dina slavar.” 19 Men Josef sade till dem: ”Var inte rädda. Skulle jag ta Guds plats? 20 Ni menade ont mot mig, men Gud har menat något gott genom det, för att bevara många människor vid liv. 21 Så var inte rädda. Jag ska sörja för er och era små barn.” Och han tröstade dem och talade vänligt till dem.
Josef dör
22 Josef bodde kvar i Egypten med sin fars husfolk, och han blev hundratio år. 23 Josef fick se Efraims barn till tredje led. Även Manasses son Makirs barn lades i Josefs knä när de föddes[e].
24 (D) Och Josef sade till sina bröder: ”Jag dör, men Gud ska se till er och föra er från detta land till det land som han lovat med ed åt Abraham, Isak och Jakob.” 25 (E) Och Josef tog ed av Israels söner och sade: ”När Gud ser till er, för då mina ben härifrån[f].”
26 Josef dog när han var hundratio år[g]. Och man balsamerade honom och lade honom i en kista i Egypten.

50 Entonces José se abrazó al cuerpo de su padre, y llorando lo besó. 2 Después ordenó a los médicos que estaban a su servicio que embalsamaran el cuerpo de su padre Israel, y así lo hicieron. 3 Tardaron cuarenta días en embalsamarlo, porque ése es el tiempo que se necesita para hacerlo.
Los egipcios guardaron luto por Israel durante setenta días, 4 y después de los días de luto, José habló con los del palacio del faraón y les dijo:
—Si me he ganado el aprecio de ustedes, háganme el favor de decirle al faraón 5 que cuando mi padre estaba por morir, me hizo jurarle que yo lo enterraría en el sepulcro que él mismo se preparó, y que está en la tierra de Canaán. Así que yo le ruego me permita ir a enterrar a mi padre; una vez que lo haya enterrado, regresaré.
6 Y el faraón contestó:
—Ve a enterrar a tu padre, tal como él te lo pidió.
7 José fue a enterrar a su padre, y lo acompañaron todos los funcionarios que tenían autoridad en el palacio del faraón y en Egipto, 8 la propia familia de Jacob, la de José, y sus hermanos. En la tierra de Gosen dejaron solamente a los niños y los animales. 9 También gente con carretas y de a caballo acompañó a José, así que era muchísima gente. 10 Cuando llegaron a Goren-ha-atad, que está al oriente del río Jordán, tuvieron una solemne ceremonia luctuosa. Allí José guardó luto por su padre durante siete días.
11 Cuando los cananeos que vivían en esa región vieron la ceremonia, dijeron: «Los egipcios tienen un entierro muy solemne.» Por eso llamaron Abel-Misraim a aquel lugar que está al oriente del Jordán.
12 Los hijos de Jacob hicieron con su padre todo lo que él les había pedido, 13 pues lo llevaron a Canaán y lo enterraron en la cueva del terreno de Macpelá, que Abraham le había comprado a Efrón el hitita para que fuera el sepulcro de la familia. Este terreno y la cueva están al oriente de Mamré. 14 Después de haber sepultado a su padre, José regresó a Egipto junto con sus hermanos y con todos los que lo habían acompañado.
Últimos días de José
15 Como Jacob había muerto, los hermanos de José pensaron: «Tal vez José nos odia, y se va a vengar de todo el mal que le hicimos.» 16 Entonces le mandaron a decir: «Antes de que tu padre muriera, nos ordenó 17 que te dijéramos: “Por favor, te pido que perdones la maldad y pecado de tus hermanos, que tan mal te trataron.” Por eso te rogamos que perdones nuestra maldad, pues somos siervos del Dios de tu padre.»
Mientras los mensajeros le daban este mensaje, José lloraba. 18 Entonces llegaron sus propios hermanos, se inclinaron delante de él hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y le dijeron:
—Aquí nos tienes. Somos tus esclavos.
19 Pero José les contestó:
—No tengan miedo. Yo no puedo ponerme en lugar de Dios. 20 Ustedes pensaron hacerme mal, pero Dios cambió ese mal en bien para hacer lo que hoy vemos: para salvar la vida de mucha gente. 21 Así que no tengan miedo. Yo les daré de comer a ustedes y a sus hijos.
Así José los tranquilizó, pues les habló con mucho cariño.
Muerte de José
22 José y la familia de su padre siguieron viviendo en Egipto. José vivió ciento diez años, 23 y llegó a ver a los bisnietos de Efraín. También alcanzó a recibir como miembros de la familia a los hijos de su nieto Maquir, que era hijo de Manasés.
24 Un día José les dijo a sus hermanos: «Me falta poco para morir, pero Dios vendrá a ayudarlos, y los sacará de este país para llevarlos a la tierra que les prometió a Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.» 25 Entonces hizo que los hijos de Israel le juraran, y les dijo: «En verdad, Dios vendrá a ayudarlos. Cuando eso suceda, ustedes deben llevarse de aquí mis restos.»
26 José murió en Egipto a la edad de ciento diez años, y su cuerpo fue embalsamado y puesto en un ataúd.
