Jacob’s Prophecy concerning His Sons

49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you ^(A)in the ^[a]days to come.

²Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob;
Yes, ^(B)listen to Israel your father.

³“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and ^(C)the beginning of my strength,
Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
⁴^[b]Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
^(D)Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.

⁵“^(E)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their ^[c]swords are implements of violence.
⁶^(F)May my soul not enter into their council;
May my glory not be united with their assembly;
For in their anger they killed ^[d]men,
And in their self-will they lamed ^[e]oxen.
⁷Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
^(G)I will scatter them in Jacob,
And disperse them among Israel.

⁸“As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
^(H)Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
⁹Judah is a ^(I)lion’s cub;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
^(J)He ^[f]crouches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a ^[g]lion, who ^[h]dares to stir him up?
¹⁰^(K)The scepter will not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
^[i]Until Shiloh comes,
And ^(L)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
¹¹^(M)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
^(N)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
¹²His eyes are ^[j]dull from wine,
And his teeth ^[k]white from milk.

¹³“^(O)Zebulun will reside at the seashore;
And he shall be ^[l]a harbor for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.

¹⁴“Issachar is a ^[m]strong donkey,
^(P)Lying down between the sheepfolds.
¹⁵When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.

¹⁶“^(Q)Dan shall ^(R)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
¹⁷Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned viper in the path,
That bites the horse’s heels,
So that its rider falls backward.
¹⁸^(S)For Your salvation I wait, Lord.

¹⁹“^(T)As for Gad, a band of raiders shall attack him,
But he will attack at their ^[n]heels.

²⁰“^[o]^(U)As for ^(V)Asher, his ^[p]food shall be ^[q]rich,
And he will yield royal delicacies.

²¹“^(W)Naphtali is a doe let loose;
He utters beautiful words.

²²“^(X)Joseph is a fruitful ^[r]branch,
A fruitful ^[s]branch by a spring;
Its ^[t]branches hang over a wall.
²³The archers provoked him,
And shot at him and were hostile toward him;
²⁴But his ^(Y)bow remained ^[u]firm,
And ^[v]^(Z)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the ^(AA)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is ^(AB)the Shepherd, ^(AC)the Stone of Israel),
²⁵From ^(AD)the God of your father who helps you,
And ^[w]^(AE)by the ^[x]Almighty who blesses you
With ^(AF)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
²⁶The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the ^[y]furthest boundary of ^(AG)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.

²⁷“Benjamin is a ^[z]ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoils.”

²⁸All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them ^[aa]when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one ^[ab]with the blessing appropriate to him.

Jacob Dies

²⁹Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am about to be ^(AH)gathered to my people; ^(AI)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in ^(AJ)the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰in the ^(AK)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a ^[ac]burial site. ³¹There they buried ^(AL)Abraham and his wife ^(AM)Sarah, there they buried ^(AN)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— ³²the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.” ³³When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and ^(AO)breathed his last, and was ^(AP)gathered to his people.

38 Lord, ^(A)do not rebuke me in Your wrath,
And do not punish me in Your burning anger.
²For Your ^(B)arrows have sunk deep into me,
And ^(C)Your hand has pressed down on me.
³There is ^(D)no healthy part in my flesh ^(E)because of Your indignation;
There is no health ^(F)in my bones because of my sin.
⁴For my ^(G)guilty deeds have gone over my head;
Like a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.
⁵My ^[a]wounds grow foul and fester
Because of ^(H)my foolishness.
⁶I am bent over and ^(I)greatly bowed down;
I ^(J)go in mourning all day long.
⁷For my ^[b]sides are filled with ^(K)burning,
And there is ^(L)no healthy part in my flesh.
⁸I feel ^(M)faint and ^[c]badly crushed;

And my ^(P)sighing is not hidden from You.

¹¹My ^[i]^(S)loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague;
And my kinsmen ^(T)stand far away.
¹²Those who ^(U)seek my life ^(V)lay snares for me;
And those who ^(W)seek to injure me have ^[j]threatened destruction,
And they ^(X)plot deception all day long.

¹³But I, like a person who is deaf, do not hear;
And I am like a ^(Y)person who cannot speak, who does not open his mouth.
¹⁴Yes, I am like a person who does not hear,
And in whose mouth are no arguments.
¹⁵For ^(Z)I wait for You, Lord;
You ^(AA)will answer, Lord my God.
¹⁶For I said, “May they not rejoice over me,
Who, when my foot slips, ^(AB)would exalt themselves over me.”
¹⁷For I am ^(AC)ready to fall,
And ^(AD)my ^[k]sorrow is continually before me.
¹⁸For I ^(AE)admit my guilt;
I am full of ^(AF)anxiety because of my sin.
¹⁹But my ^(AG)enemies are vigorous and ^[l]strong,
And those who wrongfully ^(AH)hate me are many.
²⁰And those who ^(AI)repay evil for good,
They ^(AJ)become my enemies, because I follow what is good.
²¹Do not abandon me, Lord;
My God, ^(AK)do not be far from me!
²²^(AL)Hurry to help me,
Lord, ^(AM)my salvation!

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

7 After these things Jesus ^(A)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because ^(B)the Jews ^(C)were seeking to kill Him. ²Now the feast of the Jews, ^(D)the Feast of Booths, was near. ³So His ^(E)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your ^(F)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. ⁴For no one does anything in secret ^[a]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” ⁵For not even His ^(G)brothers believed in Him. ⁶So Jesus *said to them, “^(H)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. ⁷^(I)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that ^(J)its deeds are evil. ⁸Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because ^(K)My time has not yet fully arrived.” ⁹Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰But when His ^(L)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. ¹¹^(M)So the Jews ^(N)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” ¹²And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: ^(O)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” ¹³However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for ^(P)fear of ^[b]the Jews.

¹⁴But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to ^(Q)teach. ¹⁵^(R)The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this Man ^(S)become learned, not having been educated?” ¹⁶So Jesus answered them and said, “^(T)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. ¹⁷^(U)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself. ¹⁸The one who speaks from himself ^(V)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

¹⁹“^(W)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you ^(X)seeking to kill Me?” ²⁰The crowd answered, “^(Y)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?” ²¹Jesus answered them, “I did ^(Z)one ^[c]deed, and you all are astonished. ²²For this reason ^(AA)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from ^(AB)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. ²³^(AC)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath? ²⁴Do not ^(AD)judge by the outward appearance, but judge ^[d]with righteous judgment.”
