¹³ And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,^(A) and brought them close to him. ¹⁴ But Israel^(B) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,^(C) though he was the younger,^(D) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.^(E)

¹⁵ Then he blessed^(F) Joseph and said,

¹⁷ When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand^(O) on Ephraim’s head^(P) he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. ¹⁸ Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”^(Q)

¹⁹ But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.^(R) Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,^(S) and his descendants will become a group of nations.^(T)” ²⁰ He blessed^(U) them that day^(V) and said,

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

²¹ Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you^[b](AA) and take you^[c] back to the land of your^[d] fathers.^{(AB) 22} And to you I give one more ridge of land^[e](AC) than to your brothers,^(AD) the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword^(AE) and my bow.”

³⁷ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? ³⁸ Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(A) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”^(B)

³⁹ Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. ⁴⁰ When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

⁴¹ Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour^(C) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. ⁴² Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested^(D)

⁴³ Just as he was speaking, Judas,^(E) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

⁴⁴ Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” ⁴⁵ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”^(F) and kissed him. ⁴⁶ The men seized Jesus and arrested him. ⁴⁷ Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

⁴⁸ “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? ⁴⁹ Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,^(G) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”^{(H) 50} Then everyone deserted him and fled.^(I)
