47 So Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; they are now in the land of Goshen.” 2 And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were.” 4 They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land; for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan; and now, we pray you, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.” 5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen; and if you know any able men among them, put them in charge of my cattle.”
7 Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many are the days of the years of your life?” 9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojourning are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.” 10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 11 Then Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Ram′eses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their dependents.
The Famine in Egypt
13 Now there was no food in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, “Give us food; why should we die before your eyes? For our money is gone.” 16 And Joseph answered, “Give your cattle, and I will give you food in exchange for your cattle, if your money is gone.” 17 So they brought their cattle to Joseph; and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the asses: and he supplied them with food in exchange for all their cattle that year. 18 And when that year was ended, they came to him the following year, and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord’s; there is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we with our land will be slaves to Pharaoh; and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for all the Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine was severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s; 21 and as for the people, he made slaves of them[a] from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh, and lived on the allowance which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have this day bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Now here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And at the harvests you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and as food for yourselves and your households, and as food for your little ones.” 25 And they said, “You have saved our lives; may it please my lord, we will be slaves to Pharaoh.” 26 So Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, and it stands to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh’s.
The Last Days of Jacob
27 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gained possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years.
29 And when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh, and promise to deal loyally and truly with me. Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but let me lie with my fathers; carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place.” He answered, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “Swear to me”; and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.

Jacob's Family Settles in Goshen

Joseph and the Famine

The herds of livestock are my lord's. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? (V)Buy us and our land for food, and we with our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(A) and are now in Goshen.”(B) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(C) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(D)
“Your servants(E) are shepherds,(F)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(G) because the famine is severe in Canaan(H) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(I) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(J)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(K) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(L) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(M) put them in charge of my own livestock.(N)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(O) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[a] Pharaoh,(P) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(Q) My years have been few and difficult,(R) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(S)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[b] Pharaoh(T) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(U) the district of Rameses,(V) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(W)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(X) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(Y) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(Z) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(AA) all Egypt came to Joseph(AB) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(AC) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(AD)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(AE)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(AF) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(AG) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(AH) and our livestock belongs to you,(AI) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(AJ)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(AK) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(AL) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(AM) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(AN) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[c](AO) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(AP) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(AQ) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(AR) for you so you can plant the ground.(AS) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(AT) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(AU) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(AV)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(AW) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(AX)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(AY) They acquired property there(AZ) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(BA)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(BB) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(BC) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(BD) to die,(BE) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(BF) put your hand under my thigh(BG) and promise that you will show me kindness(BH) and faithfulness.(BI) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(BJ) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(BK)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(BL) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(BM) and Israel(BN) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[d](BO)

2 Er hatte aber aus der Zahl seiner Brüder fünf mitgenommen und stellte sie dem Pharao vor.
3 Und der Pharao fragte seine Brüder: Was treibt ihr? Sie antworteten dem Pharao: Deine Knechte sind Schafhirten, wir und unsere Väter.
4 Und sie sprachen zum Pharao: Wir sind gekommen, um uns im Land aufzuhalten; denn deine Knechte haben keine Weide für ihr Vieh, so hart beschwert die Hungersnot das Land Kanaan; und nun möchten deine Knechte gerne im Land Gosen wohnen.
5 Da sprach der Pharao zu Joseph: Dein Vater und deine Brüder sind zu dir gekommen;
6 das Land Ägypten steht dir offen; lass deinen Vater und deine Brüder am besten Ort des Landes wohnen! Im Land Gosen sollen sie wohnen; und wenn du weißt, dass unter ihnen tüchtige Leute sind, so setze sie zu Aufsehern über meine Herden!
7 Und Joseph brachte seinen Vater Jakob herein und stellte ihn dem Pharao vor; und Jakob segnete den Pharao.
8 Und der Pharao fragte Jakob: Wie alt bist du?
9 Jakob sprach zum Pharao: Die ganze Zeit meiner Fremdlingschaft[a] beträgt 130 Jahre; wenig und böse[b] sind meine Lebensjahre gewesen, und sie erreichen nicht die Zahl der Lebensjahre meiner Väter in den Tagen ihrer Fremdlingschaft.
10 Und Jakob segnete den Pharao und ging hinweg vom Angesicht des Pharao.
11 Und Joseph wies seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern Wohnsitze an und gab ihnen Grundbesitz im Land Ägypten, im besten Teil des Landes, im Gebiet von Ramses, wie der Pharao befohlen hatte.
12 Und Joseph versorgte seinen Vater und seine Brüder und das ganze Haus seines Vaters mit Brot nach der Zahl der Kinder.
Joseph erwirbt ganz Ägypten für den Pharao
13 Es gab aber im ganzen Land kein Brot; denn die Hungersnot war sehr schwer, und das Land Ägypten war erschöpft wegen der Hungersnot, ebenso das Land Kanaan.
14 Und Joseph brachte alles Geld zusammen, das im Land Ägypten und im Land Kanaan gefunden wurde, für das Getreide, das man kaufen musste; und Joseph brachte das Geld in das Haus des Pharao.
15 Da nun das Geld im Land Ägypten und in Kanaan ausgegangen war, kamen alle Ägypter zu Joseph und sprachen: Gib uns Brot! Warum sollen wir vor deinen Augen sterben, weil kein Geld mehr da ist?
16 Joseph sprach: Bringt euer Vieh her, so will ich euch [Brot] geben als Entgelt für euer Vieh, wenn es kein Geld mehr gibt!
17 Da brachten sie ihr Vieh zu Joseph; und Joseph gab ihnen Brot um Pferde, Schafe, Rinder und Esel und versorgte sie so in jenem Jahr mit Brot um den Preis ihres ganzen Viehs.
18 Als nun jenes Jahr verflossen war, kamen sie zu ihm im nächsten Jahr und sprachen: Wir wollen unserem Herrn nicht verhehlen, dass, weil das Geld ausgegangen ist und das Vieh unserem Herrn gehört, nunmehr nichts mehr übrig bleibt vor unserem Herrn als unser Leib und unser Feld!
19 Warum sollen wir umkommen vor deinen Augen, wir und unser Feld? Kaufe uns um Brot samt unserem Feld, dass wir und unser Feld dem Pharao dienstbar seien! Gib uns Samen, dass wir leben und nicht sterben, und dass das Land nicht zur Wüste wird!
20 So kaufte Joseph alles Ackerland der Ägypter für den Pharao auf, denn die Ägypter verkauften jeder sein Feld, weil die Hungersnot schwer auf ihnen lastete; und so wurde das Land zum Eigentum des Pharao.
21 Das Volk aber ließ er in die verschiedenen Städte bringen,[c] von einem Ende Ägyptens bis zum anderen.
22 Nur die Äcker der Priester kaufte er nicht; denn die Priester bezogen ein festes Einkommen vom Pharao und ernährten sich von ihrem festen Einkommen, das ihnen der Pharao gab; darum brauchten sie ihre Äcker nicht zu verkaufen.
23 Und Joseph sprach zum Volk: Ich habe euch heute samt eurem Land für den Pharao gekauft; hier ist Samen für euch, besät das Land!
24 Aber vom Ertrag habt ihr dem Pharao den Fünften zu geben, und vier Teile sollen euch zur Verfügung stehen zum Besäen der Felder und zum Unterhalt für euch selbst und euer Gesinde und zur Nahrung für eure Kinder.
25 Da sprachen sie: Du hast uns das Leben erhalten! Wenn wir Gnade finden vor den Augen unseres Herrn, so wollen wir Knechte des Pharao sein!
26 Da machte Joseph dies zum Gesetz für das Ackerland Ägyptens bis zum heutigen Tag, dass dem Pharao der Fünfte gehört; nur die Äcker der Priester wurden nicht Eigentum des Pharao.
27 Und Israel wohnte im Land Ägypten, im Land Gosen, und sie nahmen es in Besitz, waren fruchtbar und mehrten sich sehr.
28 Und Jakob lebte noch 17 Jahre im Land Ägypten, und die Tage Jakobs, die Jahre seines Lebens, betrugen 147 Jahre.
29 Als nun die Zeit kam, dass Israel sterben sollte, rief er seinen Sohn Joseph und sprach zu ihm: Wenn ich Gnade gefunden habe vor deinen Augen, so lege doch deine Hand unter meine Hüfte und erweise mir Liebe und Treue: Begrabe mich doch ja nicht in Ägypten!
30 Sondern ich will bei meinen Vätern liegen; darum sollst du mich aus Ägypten wegführen und mich in ihrem Grab begraben! Er sprach: Ich will es machen, wie du gesagt hast!
31 Er aber sprach: So schwöre mir! Da schwor er ihm. Und Israel betete an am Kopfende des Bettes.
