Jakob in Egypte
47 Toen ging Jozef naar de farao. Hij vertelde hem: "Mijn vader en mijn broers zijn uit Kanaän gekomen met hun schapen, geiten, koeien en alles wat ze hebben. Ze zijn nu in de streek Gosen." 2 Hij had vijf van zijn broers meegenomen en stelde hen aan de farao voor. 3 De farao vroeg aan de broers: "Wat is jullie beroep?" Ze antwoordden: "Wij zijn schaapherders, net als onze voorvaders. 4 We willen graag als vreemdelingen in uw land komen wonen. Want er is in ons eigen land geen grasland meer voor onze kudden. Er is een heel zware hongersnood in Kanaän. Mogen we alstublieft in de streek Gosen gaan wonen?" 5 De farao zei tegen Jozef: "Je vader en je broers zijn naar jou toe gekomen. 6 Jij mag kiezen waar je hen wil laten wonen. Je mag het beste deel van het land aan hen geven, de streek Gosen. En als je flinke mannen onder hen weet, laat hen dan opzichters over mijn kudden worden."
7 Jozef bracht ook zijn vader Jakob naar de farao en stelde hem aan hem voor. Jakob zegende de farao. 8 De farao vroeg Jakob: "Hoe oud ben je?" 9 Jakob antwoordde: "Ik zwerf nu 130 jaar als vreemdeling rond. En mijn korte leven is vol moeilijkheden en verdriet geweest. Ik ben niet zo oud geworden als mijn voorvaders." 10 Jakob zegende de farao opnieuw en ging bij hem weg.
11 Jozef wees zijn vader en zijn broers plaatsen aan waar ze mochten wonen. Hij gaf hun een eigen stuk grond in het beste deel van Egypte. Dat was de streek Rameses (= Gosen), zoals de farao had bevolen. 12 Hij zorgde ervoor dat zijn vader, zijn broers en de hele familie van zijn vader voldoende te eten hadden. Ieder gezin kreeg zoveel als het nodig had.
Jozef zorgt ervoor dat de mensen te eten hebben
13 Nergens was nog brood te krijgen, want het was een heel zware hongersnood. De mensen in Egypte en Kanaän hadden verschrikkelijke honger.
14 Jozef verkocht het graan in Egypte aan de mensen. Zo verzamelde Jozef al het geld dat er in Egypte en Kanaän was. Hij bracht het geld in het paleis van de farao. 15 Tenslotte hadden de mensen in Egypte en Kanaän helemaal geen geld meer. Ze gingen naar Jozef en zeiden: "Geef ons brood! U wil toch niet dat we voor uw ogen sterven van de honger? Maar we hebben geen geld meer om te betalen!" 16 Toen zei Jozef: "Als je geen geld meer hebt, kun je betalen met vee." 17 Toen brachten ze hun vee naar Jozef. En Jozef gaf hun brood in ruil voor paarden, schapen, geiten, koeien en ezels. In dat jaar gaf hij brood aan hen in ruil voor vee.
18 Het jaar daarna kwamen ze wéér naar hem toe en zeiden: "Nu heeft u al ons geld en al ons vee. We hebben niets meer waarmee we u kunnen betalen. We hebben alleen onszelf nog en onze grond. 19 U wil toch niet dat we voor uw ogen sterven van de honger? Want dan is er niemand meer om voor de akkers te zorgen en zal alles verwilderen. Koop ons en onze grond in ruil voor brood. Dan zullen wij en onze grond de farao dienen. Geef ons ook zaad. Dan zullen we in leven blijven. Maar als we sterven, is er niemand meer om nog voor de akkers te zorgen." 20 Toen kocht Jozef al de grond van de Egyptenaren voor de farao. Want alle Egyptenaren verkochten hun akkers, omdat ze zo'n vreselijke honger hadden. Zo kreeg de farao ook al de grond. 21 En alle mensen in heel Egypte werden zijn knechten. 22 Alleen de grond van de priesters kocht hij niet. Want de priesters hadden een vast loon van de farao. Daar leefden de priesters van. Daarom hoefden zij hun grond niet te verkopen.
23 Jozef zei tegen het volk: "Ik heb nu jullie en jullie grond voor de farao gekocht. Hier is zaad voor jullie akkers, zodat jullie kunnen zaaien. 24 Maar dan moeten jullie straks van de oogst een vijfde deel aan de farao geven. De rest mogen jullie houden. Dat kunnen jullie gebruiken om te zaaien en om er brood van te bakken voor jullie gezinnen." 25 Ze antwoordden: "U heeft ons leven gered en we zijn u daar dankbaar voor. We zullen de farao dienen." 26 En Jozef maakte er een wet van voor het hele land, dat een vijfde deel van de oogst voortaan voor de farao zou zijn. Die wet geldt nog steeds. Alleen de grond van de priesters werd geen eigendom van de farao.
Jozef belooft aan Jakob dat hij hem in zijn eigen land zal begraven
27 Zo bleef de familie van Israël dus in de streek Gosen in Egypte wonen. Ze hadden daar eigen grond gekregen. Ze kregen veel kinderen, zodat hun familie heel groot werd. 28 Jakob leefde nog 17 jaar in Egypte. Hij werd 147 jaar. 29 Toen voelde Israël dat hij niet lang meer zou leven. Hij riep zijn zoon Jozef en zei tegen hem: "Als je van mij houdt, zweer dan dat je me niet in Egypte zal begraven. 30 Ik wil bij mijn vader en grootvader worden begraven. Breng mij daarom uit Egypte weg en begraaf me in hun graf." Jozef zei: "Ik zal het doen." 31 Toen zei Israël: "Zweer het mij." En hij zwoer het hem. Israël boog zich in aanbidding neer aan het hoofdeinde van het bed.

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(A) and are now in Goshen.”(B) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(C) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(D)
“Your servants(E) are shepherds,(F)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(G) because the famine is severe in Canaan(H) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(I) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(J)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(K) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(L) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(M) put them in charge of my own livestock.(N)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(O) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[a] Pharaoh,(P) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(Q) My years have been few and difficult,(R) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(S)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[b] Pharaoh(T) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(U) the district of Rameses,(V) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(W)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(X) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(Y) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(Z) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(AA) all Egypt came to Joseph(AB) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(AC) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(AD)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(AE)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(AF) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(AG) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(AH) and our livestock belongs to you,(AI) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(AJ)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(AK) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(AL) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(AM) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(AN) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[c](AO) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(AP) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(AQ) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(AR) for you so you can plant the ground.(AS) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(AT) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(AU) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(AV)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(AW) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(AX)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(AY) They acquired property there(AZ) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(BA)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(BB) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(BC) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(BD) to die,(BE) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(BF) put your hand under my thigh(BG) and promise that you will show me kindness(BH) and faithfulness.(BI) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(BJ) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(BK)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(BL) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(BM) and Israel(BN) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[d](BO)

Joseph Is Governor of Egypt
47 Then Joseph (A)went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in (B)the land of Goshen.” 2 And he took five men from among his brothers and (C)presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, (D)“What is your occupation?”
And they said to Pharaoh, (E)“Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.” 4 And they said to Pharaoh, (F)“We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, (G)for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants (H)dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 (I)The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell (J)in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob (K)blessed Pharaoh. 8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, (L)“The days of the years of my [a]pilgrimage are (M)one hundred and thirty years; (N)few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and (O)they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10 So Jacob (P)blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of (Q)Rameses, (R)as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 Then Joseph provided (S)his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread, according to the number in their families.
Joseph Deals with the Famine
13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, (T)so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (U)And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for (V)why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”
16 Then Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he [b]fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may (W)live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”
20 Then Joseph (X)bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he [c]moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end. 22 (Y)Only the land of the (Z)priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”
25 So they said, “You have saved (AA)our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” 26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, (AB)except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.
Joseph’s Vow to Jacob
27 So Israel (AC)dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and (AD)grew and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years. 29 When the time (AE)drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please (AF)put your hand under my thigh, and (AG)deal kindly and truly with me. (AH)Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but (AI)let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and (AJ)bury me in their burial place.”
And he said, “I will do as you have said.”
31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So (AK)Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

Jacob's Family Settles in Goshen
47 So Joseph (A)went in and told Pharaoh, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan. They are now in (B)the land of Goshen.” 2 And from among his brothers he took five men and (C)presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Pharaoh said to his brothers, (D)“What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, (E)“Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were.” 4 They said to Pharaoh, (F)“We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. And now, please let your servants dwell (G)in the land of Goshen.” 5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and your brothers (H)in the best of the land. (I)Let them settle in the land of Goshen, and if you know any (J)able men among them, put them in charge of my livestock.”

Joseph and the Famine

(V)Buy us and our land for food, and we with our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for all the Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine was severe on them. The land became Pharaoh's. 21 As for the people, he made servants of them[a] from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 (W)Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and lived on the allowance that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have this day bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Now here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And at the harvests you shall give a (X)fifth to Pharaoh, and four fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and as food for yourselves and your households, and as food for your little ones.” 25 And they said, “You have saved our lives; (Y)may it please my lord, we will be servants to Pharaoh.” 26 So Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, and it stands to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; (Z)the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's.
