47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(A) and are now in Goshen.”(B) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(C) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(D)
“Your servants(E) are shepherds,(F)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(G) because the famine is severe in Canaan(H) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(I) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(J)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(K) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(L) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(M) put them in charge of my own livestock.(N)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(O) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[a] Pharaoh,(P) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(Q) My years have been few and difficult,(R) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(S)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[b] Pharaoh(T) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(U) the district of Rameses,(V) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(W)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(X) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(Y) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(Z) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(AA) all Egypt came to Joseph(AB) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(AC) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(AD)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(AE)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(AF) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(AG) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(AH) and our livestock belongs to you,(AI) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(AJ)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(AK) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(AL) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(AM) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(AN) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[c](AO) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(AP) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(AQ) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(AR) for you so you can plant the ground.(AS) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(AT) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(AU) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(AV)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(AW) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(AX)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(AY) They acquired property there(AZ) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(BA)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(BB) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(BC) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(BD) to die,(BE) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(BF) put your hand under my thigh(BG) and promise that you will show me kindness(BH) and faithfulness.(BI) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(BJ) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(BK)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(BL) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(BM) and Israel(BN) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[d](BO)

47 Na hun aankomst ging Jozef naar de farao. ‘Mijn vader en mijn broers zijn aangekomen vanuit Kanaän,’ rapporteerde hij, ‘met hun schapen, runderen en andere bezittingen. Zij willen zich graag in het land Gosen vestigen.’ 2 Hij had vijf broers meegenomen en stelde hen aan de farao voor. 3 Die vroeg: ‘Wat is uw beroep?’ Zij antwoordden: ‘Wij zijn schaapherders, net als onze voorouders. 4 Wij zijn gekomen om ons hier in Egypte te vestigen, want in Kanaän is geen voedsel voor onze kudden. De hongersnood is daar erg zwaar. Wij willen u graag toestemming vragen om ons in het land Gosen te mogen vestigen.’ 5 De farao zei tegen Jozef: ‘Kies maar een plaats waar ze zich kunnen vestigen. 6 Geef hun het beste land van Egypte. Het land Gosen lijkt mij wel geschikt. En als er geschikte mensen bij zijn, mag u die wel als opzichters over mijn schaapskudden aanstellen.’
7 Toen bracht Jozef zijn vader Jakob bij de farao. En Jakob zegende de farao. 8 ‘Hoe oud bent u?’ vroeg de farao. 9 Jakob antwoordde: ‘Ik heb honderddertig lange, harde jaren geleefd en ben nog lang niet zo oud als sommigen van mijn voorouders zijn geworden.’ 10 Voor hij vertrok, zegende Jakob de farao nog een keer.
11 Zo wees Jozef het beste stuk land van Egypte—het land Rameses—toe aan zijn vader en zijn broers, precies zoals de farao het had geboden. 12 Jozef voorzag hen bovendien van voedsel, genoeg voor iedereen.
13 De hongersnood werd steeds erger en Egypte en Kanaän hadden er veel van te lijden. 14 Jozef verzamelde al het geld in Egypte en Kanaän in ruil voor graan en bracht al dat geld onder in de kluizen van de farao. 15 Toen de mensen geen geld meer hadden, kwamen zij naar Jozef toe en smeekten om voedsel. ‘Al ons geld is op,’ zeiden zij, ‘maar wij moeten toch eten, waarom zouden wij sterven?’ 16 ‘Goed,’ zei Jozef, ‘u kunt mij betalen met het vee dat u bezit. Vee in ruil voor graan.’ 17 Zo brachten de mensen hun vee naar Jozef in ruil voor voedsel. Al spoedig bezat de farao alle paarden, schapen, runderen en ezels die in Egypte te vinden waren. 18 Een jaar later kwamen de mensen weer terug en zeiden: ‘Ons geld is op en al het vee is nu van u. Wij hebben alleen onze lichamen en ons land nog. 19 Waarom zouden wij sterven? Koop ons en ons land en wij zullen de lijfeigenen van de farao zijn. Wij zullen onszelf ruilen voor voedsel, dan blijven wij in leven en komt het land niet braak te liggen.’ 20 Zo kocht Jozef al het land in Egypte voor de farao, alle Egyptenaren verkochten hem hun grond vanwege de zware hongersnood. Al het land werd zo het eigendom van de farao. 21 Op die manier werden de Egyptenaren lijfeigenen van de farao. 22 Het enige land dat hij niet kocht, was dat van de priesters. Zij kregen voedsel toegewezen door de farao en hoefden het niet te kopen.
23 Toen zei Jozef tegen de mensen: ‘Ik heb u en uw land voor de farao gekocht. Hier is graan. Ga terug naar uw land en zaai het in. 24 En wanneer u de oogst binnenhaalt, is éénvijfde deel ervan voor de farao. Viervijfde deel kunt u houden als zaaisel voor het volgende jaar en als voedsel voor uw gezinnen.’ 25 ‘U hebt onze levens gered,’ vonden de mensen. ‘Wij zullen de farao graag dienen als lijfeigenen.’ 26 Jozef maakte een wet voor het land Egypte—en die wet is nog steeds van kracht—dat twintig procent van alle oogsten door de farao werd opgeëist als een belasting. De enige uitzondering daarop vormde het land dat eigendom was van de tempels.
27 Zo woonde Israël in het land Gosen en raakte daar ingeburgerd. De familie was vruchtbaar en groeide snel. 28 Jakob leefde nog zeventien jaar na zijn aankomst in Egypte. Hij was 147 jaar oud toen hij stierf. 29 Toen hij zijn dood voelde naderen, riep hij Jozef bij zich en zei: ‘Zweer mij plechtig dat je mijn laatste wil zult eerbiedigen en uitvoeren. Begraaf mij niet in Egypte. 30 Wanneer ik gestorven ben, moet je mij uit Egypte wegbrengen en naast mijn voorouders begraven.’ Jozef beloofde het zijn vader. 31 ‘Zweer dat je dat zult doen,’ drong Jakob aan. En Jozef deed dat. Daarna boog Israël zich dankbaar neer aan het hoofdeinde van zijn bed.

Joseph Is Governor of Egypt
47 Then Joseph (A)went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in (B)the land of Goshen.” 2 And he took five men from among his brothers and (C)presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, (D)“What is your occupation?”
And they said to Pharaoh, (E)“Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.” 4 And they said to Pharaoh, (F)“We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, (G)for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants (H)dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 (I)The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell (J)in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob (K)blessed Pharaoh. 8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, (L)“The days of the years of my [a]pilgrimage are (M)one hundred and thirty years; (N)few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and (O)they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10 So Jacob (P)blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of (Q)Rameses, (R)as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 Then Joseph provided (S)his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread, according to the number in their families.
Joseph Deals with the Famine
13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, (T)so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (U)And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for (V)why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”
16 Then Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he [b]fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may (W)live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”
20 Then Joseph (X)bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he [c]moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end. 22 (Y)Only the land of the (Z)priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”
25 So they said, “You have saved (AA)our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” 26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, (AB)except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.
Joseph’s Vow to Jacob
27 So Israel (AC)dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and (AD)grew and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years. 29 When the time (AE)drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please (AF)put your hand under my thigh, and (AG)deal kindly and truly with me. (AH)Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but (AI)let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and (AJ)bury me in their burial place.”
And he said, “I will do as you have said.”
31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So (AK)Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.
7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou?
9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.
10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
11 And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12 And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

16 And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.
17 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.
18 When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:
19 Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.
20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.
21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.
22 Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands.
23 Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.
24 And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.
25 And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.
26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's.
27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.
28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.
29 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:
30 But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.
31 And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.

Jakob inför farao
47 Och Josef kom och berättade för farao: "Min far och mina bröder har kommit från Kanaans land med sina får och sin nötboskap och allt de äger. De är nu i landet Gosen." 2 Han hade valt ut fem av sina bröder och förde fram dem inför farao. 3 Då frågade farao hans bröder: "Vad har ni för yrke?" De svarade farao: "Dina tjänare är herdar, vi liksom våra fäder." 4 De sade också till farao: "Vi har kommit för att bo här i landet någon tid, för dina tjänare har inget bete för sina får eftersom hungersnöden är svår i Kanaans land. Låt nu dina tjänare bo i landet Gosen." 5 Då sade farao till Josef: "Din far och dina bröder har alltså kommit till dig. 6 Egyptens land ligger öppet för dig. I den bästa delen av landet skall du låta din far och dina bröder bo. Låt dem bo i landet Gosen, och om du vet att några bland dem är dugliga män, så sätt dem till uppsyningsmän över min boskap."
7 Sedan hämtade Josef sin fader Jakob och förde honom fram inför farao, och Jakob hälsade farao. 8 Och farao frågade Jakob: "Vad är din ålder?" 9 Jakob svarade farao: "Min vandringstid har varat i etthundratrettio år. Få och svåra har mina levnadsår varit. De når inte upp till mina förfäders levnadsår under deras vandringstid." 10 Och Jakob välsignade farao och gick ut ifrån honom. 11 Josef lät sin far och sina bröder bo i Egyptens land och gav dem egendom i den bästa delen av landet, i Raamses område, så som farao hade befallt. 12 Josef försörjde sin far och sina bröder och hela sin fars hus och gav var och en underhåll efter antalet barn.
Hungersnödens följder för egyptierna
13 Men ingenstans i landet fanns bröd eftersom hungersnöden var mycket svår, och både Egypten och Kanaans land försmäktade av hunger. 14 För den säd som folket köpte samlade Josef alla pengar som fanns i Egypten och Kanaan och förde dem in i faraos palats. 15 Men när pengarna tog slut i Egypten och Kanaan, kom alla egyptier till Josef och sade: "Ge oss bröd! Varför skall vi dö inför dina ögon? Vi har ju inga pengar kvar." 16 Josef svarade: "För hit er boskap, så skall jag ge er bröd för boskapen, om era pengar är slut." 17 Då kom de med sin boskap till Josef, och han gav dem bröd i utbyte mot deras hästar, får, nötboskap och åsnor. På detta sätt underhöll han dem det året och gav dem bröd i utbyte mot all deras boskap.
18 Så tog det året slut. Men året därpå kom de tillbaka till honom och sade: "Vi kan inte dölja det för min herre. Pengarna är slut och boskapen vi ägde tillhör min herre. Ingenting annat finns nu kvar att ge än våra kroppar och vår jord. 19 Varför skall vi dö inför dina ögon, vi och vår åkerjord? Köp oss och vår jord för bröd, så skall vi med vår jord bli faraos slavar. Ge oss bara utsäde, så att vi får leva och inte dör och så att åkerjorden inte läggs öde." 20 Då köpte Josef all jord i Egypten åt farao. Egyptierna sålde var och en sin åker eftersom hungersnöden var så svår. Och åkerjorden blev så faraos egendom. 21 Folket flyttade han till städerna, från ena änden av Egypten till den andra. 22 Men prästernas jord köpte han inte, ty prästerna hade sitt bestämda underhåll av farao, och de levde av det som farao gav dem. Därför behövde de inte sälja sin jord. 23 Och Josef sade till folket: "Se, jag har nu köpt er och er jord åt farao. Här har ni utsäde. Beså nu jorden. 24 När grödan kommer in skall ni ge en femtedel åt farao. Men fyra femtedelar skall ni själva ha till utsäde och till mat åt er och ert husfolk och era små barn." 25 De svarade: "Du har räddat våra liv. Herre, låt oss finna nåd för dina ögon, så skall vi bli faraos slavar." 26 Josef gjorde det till en lag som gäller än i dag för Egyptens jord, att femtedelen av skörden skall ges åt farao. Det var bara prästernas jord som inte blev faraos egendom.
Jakobs sista önskan
27 Så bodde Israel i landet Gosen i Egypten. De skaffade sig ägodelar och var fruktsamma och förökade sig mycket. 28 Jakob levde sjutton år i Egypten och han blev etthundrafyrtiosju år gammal. 29 När tiden närmade sig att Israel skulle dö, kallade han till sig sin son Josef och sade till honom: "Om jag har funnit nåd för dina ögon, så lägg din hand under min höft och lova att visa mig kärlek och trofasthet så att du inte begraver mig i Egypten. 30 När jag har gått till vila hos mina fäder skall du i stället föra mig från Egypten och begrava mig i deras grav." Han svarade: "Jag skall göra som du säger." 31 Men Jakob sade: "Ge mig din ed på det!" Och han gav honom sin ed, och Israel tillbad böjd mot bäddens huvudgärd.
