Now (A)these were the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: (B)Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn. The (C)sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 (D)The sons of Simeon were [a]Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, [b]Jachin, [c]Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of (E)Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 The sons of (F)Judah were (G)Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). (H)The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, [d]Puvah, [e]Job, and Shimron. 14 The (I)sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These were the (J)sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, were thirty-three.

16 The sons of Gad were [f]Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, [g]Ezbon, Eri, [h]Arodi, and Areli. 17 (K)The sons of Asher were Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. And the sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. 18 (L)These were the sons of Zilpah, (M)whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons.

19 The (N)sons of Rachel, (O)Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin. 20 (P)And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 21 (Q)The sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, (R)Ehi, Rosh, (S)Muppim, [i]Huppim, and Ard. 22 These were the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons in all.

23 The son of Dan was [j]Hushim. 24 (T)The sons of Naphtali were [k]Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and [l]Shillem. 25 (U)These were the sons of Bilhah, (V)whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: seven persons in all.

26 (W)All the persons who went with Jacob to Egypt, who came from his body, (X)besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all.

Israel’s Suffering in Egypt

Now (A)these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt; each man and his household came with Jacob: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. All those [a]who were descendants of Jacob were (B)seventy[b] persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already). And (C)Joseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation. (D)But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and [c]grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, (E)who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and (F)mightier than we; 10 (G)come, let us (H)deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them (I)to afflict them with their (J)burdens. And they built for Pharaoh (K)supply cities, Pithom (L)and Raamses.
