Genesis 46

New International Version

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel^(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,^(B) he offered sacrifices^(C) to the God of his father Isaac.^(D)

²And God spoke to Israel^(E) in a vision at night^(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”^(G) he replied.

³“I am God, the God of your father,”^(H) he said. “Do not be afraid^(I) to go down to Egypt,^(J) for I will make you into a great nation^(K) there.^(L) ⁴I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.^(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.^(N)”

⁵Then Jacob left Beersheba,^(O) and Israel’s^(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts^(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. ⁶So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,^(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions^(S) they had acquired^(T) in Canaan. ⁷Jacob brought with him to Egypt^(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.^(V)

⁸These are the names of the sons of Israel^(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn^(X) of Jacob.

⁹The sons of Reuben:^(Y)

Hanok, Pallu,^(Z) Hezron and Karmi.^(AA)

¹⁰The sons of Simeon:^(AB)

Jemuel,^(AC) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar^(AD) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

¹¹The sons of Levi:^(AE)

Gershon,^(AF) Kohath^(AG) and Merari.^(AH)

¹²The sons of Judah:^(AI)

Er,^(AJ) Onan,^(AK) Shelah, Perez^(AL) and Zerah^(AM) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).^(AN)

The sons of Perez:^(AO)

Hezron and Hamul.^(AP)

¹³The sons of Issachar:^(AQ)

Tola, Puah,^[a]^(AR) Jashub^[b]^(AS) and Shimron.

¹⁴The sons of Zebulun:^(AT)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

¹⁵These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,^[c]^(AU) besides his daughter Dinah.^(AV) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

¹⁶The sons of Gad:^(AW)

Zephon,^[d]^(AX) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

¹⁷The sons of Asher:^(AY)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

¹⁸These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,^(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah^(BA)—sixteen in all.

¹⁹The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:^(BB)

Joseph and Benjamin.^(BC) ²⁰In Egypt, Manasseh^(BD) and Ephraim^(BE) were born to Joseph^(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.^[e]^(BG)

²¹The sons of Benjamin:^(BH)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.^(BI)

²²These were the sons of Rachel^(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

²³The son of Dan:^(BK)

Hushim.^(BL)

²⁴The sons of Naphtali:^(BM)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

²⁵These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,^(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel^(BO)—seven in all.

²⁶All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.^(BP) ²⁷With the two sons^[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,^(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy^[g] in all.^(BR)

²⁸Now Jacob sent Judah^(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.^(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, ²⁹Joseph had his chariot^(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.^(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father^[h] and wept^(BW) for a long time.^(BX)

³⁰Israel^(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”^(BZ)

³¹Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,^(CA) have come to me.^(CB) ³²The men are shepherds;^(CC) they tend livestock,^(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’^(CE) ³³When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’^(CF) ³⁴you should answer, ‘Your servants^(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’^(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle^(CI) in the region of Goshen,^(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.^(CK)”

Job

12 Then Job replied:

²“Doubtless you are the only people who matter,
    and wisdom will die with you!^(A)
³But I have a mind as well as you;
    I am not inferior to you.
    Who does not know all these things?^(B)

⁴“I have become a laughingstock^(C) to my friends,^(D)
    though I called on God and he answered^(E)—
    a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!^(F)
⁵Those who are at ease have contempt^(G) for misfortune
    as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.^(H)
⁶The tents of marauders are undisturbed,^(I)
    and those who provoke God are secure^(J)—
    those God has in his hand.^[a]

⁷“But ask the animals, and they will teach you,^(K)
    or the birds in the sky,^(L) and they will tell you;^(M)
⁸or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
    or let the fish in the sea inform you.
⁹Which of all these does not know^(N)
    that the hand of the Lord has done this?^(O)
¹⁰In his hand is the life^(P) of every creature
    and the breath of all mankind.^(Q)
¹¹Does not the ear test words
    as the tongue tastes food?^(R)
¹²Is not wisdom found among the aged?^(S)
    Does not long life bring understanding?^(T)

¹³“To God belong wisdom^(U) and power;^(V)
    counsel and understanding are his.^(W)
¹⁴What he tears down^(X) cannot be rebuilt;^(Y)
    those he imprisons cannot be released.^(Z)
¹⁵If he holds back the waters,^(AA) there is drought;^(AB)
    if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.^(AC)
¹⁶To him belong strength and insight;^(AD)
    both deceived and deceiver are his.^(AE)
¹⁷He leads rulers away stripped^(AF)
    and makes fools of judges.^(AG)
¹⁸He takes off the shackles^(AH) put on by kings
    and ties a loincloth^[b] around their waist.^(AI)
¹⁹He leads priests away stripped^(AJ)
    and overthrows officials long established.^(AK)
²⁰He silences the lips of trusted advisers
    and takes away the discernment of elders.^(AL)
²¹He pours contempt on nobles^(AM)
    and disarms the mighty.^(AN)
²²He reveals the deep things of darkness^(AO)
    and brings utter darkness^(AP) into the light.^(AQ)
²³He makes nations great, and destroys them;^(AR)
    he enlarges nations,^(AS) and disperses them.^(AT)
²⁴He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason;^(AU)
    he makes them wander in a trackless waste.^(AV)
²⁵They grope in darkness with no light;^(AW)
    he makes them stagger like drunkards.^(AX)

¹We have heard it with our ears,^(A) O God;
    our ancestors have told us^(B)
what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.^(C)
²With your hand you drove out^(D) the nations
    and planted^(E) our ancestors;
you crushed^(F) the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.^(G)
³It was not by their sword^(H) that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand,^(I) your arm,^(J)
    and the light^(K) of your face, for you loved^(L) them.

⁴You are my King^(M) and my God,^(N)
    who decrees^[c] victories^(O) for Jacob.
⁵Through you we push back^(P) our enemies;
    through your name we trample^(Q) our foes.
⁶I put no trust in my bow,^(R)
    my sword does not bring me victory;
⁷but you give us victory^(S) over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.^(T)
⁸In God we make our boast^(U) all day long,^(V)
    and we will praise your name forever.^[d]^(W)

⁹But now you have rejected^(X) and humbled us;^(Y)
    you no longer go out with our armies.^(Z)
¹⁰You made us retreat^(AA) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered^(AB) us.
¹¹You gave us up to be devoured like sheep^(AC)
    and have scattered us among the nations.^(AD)
¹²You sold your people for a pittance,^(AE)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

¹³You have made us a reproach^(AF) to our neighbors,^(AG)
    the scorn^(AH) and derision^(AI) of those around us.
¹⁴You have made us a byword^(AJ) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads^(AK) at us.
¹⁵I live in disgrace^(AL) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame^(AM)
¹⁶at the taunts^(AN) of those who reproach and revile^(AO) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.^(AP)

¹⁷All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten^(AQ) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
¹⁸Our hearts had not turned^(AR) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
¹⁹But you crushed^(AS) us and made us a haunt for jackals;^(AT)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.^(AU)

²⁰If we had forgotten^(AV) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,^(AW)
²¹would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?^(AX)
²²Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep^(AY) to be slaughtered.^(AZ)

²³Awake,^(BA) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(BB)
Rouse yourself!^(BC) Do not reject us forever.^(BD)
²⁴Why do you hide your face^(BE)
and forget^(BF) our misery and oppression?^(BG)

²⁵We are brought down to the dust;^(BH)
our bodies cling to the ground.
²⁶Rise up^(BI) and help us;
rescue^(BJ) us because of your unfailing love.^(BK)
