Joseph Shows Kindness to His Brothers
45 Then Joseph could not control himself [any longer] in front of all those who attended him, and he called out, “Have everyone leave me.” So no man stood there when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers. 2 Joseph wept aloud, and the Egyptians [who had just left him] heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard of it. 3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers were speechless, for they were stunned and dismayed by [the fact that they were in] Joseph’s presence.
4 And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come closer to me.” And they approached him. And he said, “I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 Now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to save life and preserve our family. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are still five more years in which there will be no plowing and harvesting. 7 God sent me [to Egypt] ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on the earth, and to keep you alive by a great escape. 8 So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry and go up to my father, and tell him, ‘Your son Joseph says this to you: “God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. 10 You shall live in the land of Goshen [the best pasture land of Egypt], and you shall be close to me—you and your children and your grandchildren, your flocks and your herds and all you have. 11 There I will provide for you and sustain you, so that you and your household and all that are yours may not become impoverished, for there are still five years of famine to come.”’ 12 Look! Your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that I am speaking to you [personally in your language and not through an interpreter]. 13 Now you must tell my father of all my splendor and power in Egypt, and of everything that you have seen; and you must hurry and bring my father down here.” 14 Then he embraced his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck. 15 He kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and afterward his brothers talked with him.
16 When the news was heard in Pharaoh’s house that Joseph’s brothers had come, it pleased Pharaoh and his servants. 17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: load your animals and return to the land of Canaan [without delay], 18 and get your father and your households and come to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you will eat the fat (the finest produce) of the land.’ 19 Now you [brothers of Joseph] are ordered [by Pharaoh], ‘Do this: take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father and come. 20 Do not be concerned with your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’”
21 Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them wagons according to the command of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey. 22 To each of them Joseph gave changes of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing. 23 To his father he sent the following: ten male donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and provision for his father [to supply all who were with him] on the journey.
24 So he sent his brothers away, and as they departed, he said to them, “See that you do not quarrel on the journey [about how to explain this to our father].” 25 So they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father, 26 and they said to him, “Joseph is still alive, and indeed he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” But Jacob was stunned and his heart almost stopped beating, because he did not believe them. 27 When they told him everything that Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel (Jacob) said, “It is enough! Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

45 Nu kunde Josef inte behärska sina känslor längre inför alla de närvarande. ”Gå ut härifrån allesammans”, ropade han till sina tjänare. Ingen av dem var närvarande när han sedan gav sig till känna för sina bröder, 2 och han brast ut i gråt och grät så högt att egypterna hörde det, även farao och hans hov fick veta det.
3 ”Jag är Josef”, sa han till sina bröder. ”Lever verkligen min far fortfarande?” Men hans bröder kunde inte svara honom. De var helt skräckslagna.
4 ”Kom fram hit”, sa han. De kom närmare, och än en gång sa han: ”Jag är Josef, er bror, som ni sålde till Egypten! 5 Men sörj nu inte över att ni sålde mig hit. Ni behöver inte anklaga er själva. Gud skickade hit mig i förväg för att rädda era liv. 6 Dessa två år av svält kommer att följas av fem år till, då man varken kommer att plöja eller skörda. 7 Gud har skickat mig hit för att hålla er och era familjer vid liv, till räddning för många.
8 Ja, det var Gud som skickade mig hit och inte ni. Han har gjort mig till rådgivare åt farao, ledare för hela hans förvaltning och härskare över hela Egyptens land.
9 Skynda er nu hem till min far! Säg till honom: så här säger din son Josef: Gud har satt mig som härskare över hela Egyptens land. Kom hit till mig omedelbart! 10 Du ska få bo i Goshens land, så att du är nära mig med alla dina barn, barnbarn, dina djur och allt annat du äger. 11 Jag ska ta hand om dig här, eftersom det fortfarande återstår fem års hungersnöd. Varken du eller din familj eller någon av de dina ska lida någon brist. 12 Nu har ni ju själva sett, och min bror Benjamin också, att det verkligen är jag, Josef, som talar till er. 13 Berätta för vår far om min höga ställning här i Egypten och om allt ni har sett. Skynda er hem och hämta vår far!”
14 Josef föll sin bror Benjamin om halsen och grät, och Benjamin grät i hans famn. 15 Josef kysste och omfamnade alla sina bröder och grät. Sedan samtalade han och bröderna med varandra.
16 Nyheten om att Josefs bröder hade kommit nådde snart farao, och både han och hans hovtjänstemän blev mycket glada.
17 Sedan sa farao till Josef: ”Säg till dina bröder att göra så här: lasta era packdjur och far till Kanaan 18 för att hämta er far och hela er släkt, och kom hit till mig. Jag ska ge er det bästa i hela Egyptens land. Ni ska få äta av landets goda. 19 Befall dem också att göra så här: ta med er vagnar från Egypten för era barn och kvinnor, och hämta er far och kom. 20 Oroa er inte över era tillhörigheter, för det bästa av Egyptens land ska tillhöra er.”
21 Israels söner gjorde så. Josef gav dem vagnar, precis som farao hade befallt, och mat för resan. 22 Han gav dessutom nya kläder[a] till var och en av dem, men Benjamin fick 300 siklar silver[b] och fem uppsättningar kläder. 23 Till sin far skickade han tio åsnelaster med det bästa av Egyptens produkter och tio åsnor med säd, bröd och annan mat som hans far kunde behöva på resan.
24 Utrustade på detta sätt sände han iväg sina bröder med orden: ”Gräla nu inte på vägen!” 25 De lämnade Egypten och återvände till Kanaans land, till sin far Jakob.
26 ”Josef lever”, berättade de. ”Han är härskare över hela Egyptens land!” Jakob blev alldeles förstummad. Han kunde inte tro dem. 27 Men när de berättade allt Josef sagt till dem, och när Jakob såg vagnarna som Josef hade skickat för att hämta honom, levde han upp. 28 Han sa: ”Det måste vara sant! Min son Josef lever! Jag måste resa så att jag får träffa honom innan jag dör.”

45 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.
2 And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard.
3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.
4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.
5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.
7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not:
10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast:
11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.
12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.
13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither.
14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.
15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.
16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;
18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.
19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.
20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is your's.
21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.
22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.
23 And to his father he sent after this manner; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way.
24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.
25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father,
26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.
27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:
28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

45 Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, “Make everyone go out from me!” So no one stood with him (A)while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he (B)wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it.
3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, (C)“I am Joseph; does my father still live?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence. 4 And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” So they came near. 25 Then they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt.” (T)And Jacob’s heart stood still, because he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit (U)of Jacob their father revived. 28 Then Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”
