A Silver Cup in a Sack
44 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house:(A) “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.(B) 2 Then put my cup,(C) the silver one,(D) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.
3 As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.(E) 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward,(F) “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?(G) 5 Isn’t this the cup(H) my master drinks from and also uses for divination?(I) This is a wicked thing you have done.’”
6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants(J) to do anything like that!(K) 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan(L) the silver(M) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.(N) So why would we steal(O) silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants(P) is found to have it, he will die;(Q) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.(R)”
10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it(S) will become my slave;(T) the rest of you will be free from blame.”(U)
11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward(V) proceeded to search,(W) beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.(X) And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.(Y) 13 At this, they tore their clothes.(Z) Then they all loaded their donkeys(AA) and returned to the city.
14 Joseph was still in the house(AB) when Judah(AC) and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.(AD) 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done?(AE) Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?(AF)”
16 “What can we say to my lord?(AG)” Judah(AH) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?(AI) God has uncovered your servants’(AJ) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves(AK)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.(AL)”
17 But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing!(AM) Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.(AN) The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”(AO)
18 Then Judah(AP) went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AQ) let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry(AR) with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants,(AS) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’(AT) 20 And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age.(AU) His brother is dead,(AV) and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’(AW)
21 “Then you said to your servants,(AX) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’(AY) 22 And we said to my lord,(AZ) ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’(BA) 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’(BB) 24 When we went back to your servant my father,(BC) we told him what my lord(BD) had said.(BE)
25 “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’(BF) 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’(BG)
27 “Your servant my father(BH) said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.(BI) 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.”(BJ) And I have not seen him since.(BK) 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(BL) in misery.’(BM)
30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father,(BN) and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,(BO) 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.(BP) Your servants(BQ) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave(BR) in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’(BS)
33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave(BT) in place of the boy,(BU) and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery(BV) that would come on my father.”(BW)

44 Därefter bjöd han sin hovmästare och sade: »Fyll männens säckar med säd, så mycket de kunna rymma, och lägg vars och ens penningar överst i hans säck.
2 Och min bägare, silverbägaren, skall du lägga överst i den yngstes säck, tillika med penningarna för hans säd.» Och han gjorde såsom Josef hade sagt.
3 Om morgonen, då det blev dager, fingo männen fara med sina åsnor.
4 Men när de hade kommit ett litet stycke utom staden, sade Josef till sin hovmästare: »Stå upp och sätt efter männen; och när du hinner upp dem, så säg till dem: 'Varför haven I lönat gott med ont?
5 Det är ju just den bägaren som min herre dricker ur, och som han plägar spå med. Det är en ond gärning I haven gjort.'»
6 När han nu hann upp dem, sade han detta till dem.
7 Då svarade de honom: »Varför talar min herre så? Bort det, att dina tjänare skulle göra sådant!
8 De penningar som vi funno överst i våra säckar hava vi ju fört tillbaka till dig från Kanaans land. Huru skulle vi då kunna vilja stjäla silver eller guld ur din herres hus?
9 Den bland dina tjänare, som den finnes hos, han må dö; därtill vilja vi andra bliva min herres trälar.»
10 Han svarade: »Ja, vare det såsom I haven sagt; den som den finnes hos, han skall bliva min träl. Men I andra skolen vara utan skuld.»
11 Och de skyndade sig att lyfta ned var och en sin säck på jorden, och öppnade var och en sin säck.
12 Och han begynte att söka hos den äldste och slutade hos den yngste; och bägaren fanns i Benjamins säck.
13 Då revo de sönder sina kläder och lastade åter var och en sin åsna och vände tillbaka till staden.
14 Och Juda och hans bröder gingo in i Josefs hus, där denne ännu var kvar; och de föllo ned till jorden för honom.
15 Då sade Josef till dem: »Vad haven I gjort! Förstoden I icke att en man sådan som jag kan spå?»
16 Juda svarade: Vad skola vi säga till min herre, vad skola vi tala, och huru skola vi rättfärdiga oss? Gud har funnit dina tjänares missgärning. Se, vi äro min herres trälar, vi andra såväl som den som bägaren har blivit funnen hos.»
17 Men han sade: »Bort det, att jag skulle så göra! Den som bägaren har blivit funnen hos, han skall bliva min träl. Men I andra mån i frid fara hem till eder fader.»
18 Då trädde Juda fram till honom och sade: »Hör mig, herre; låt din tjänare tala ett ord inför min herre, och må din vrede icke upptändas mot din tjänare; ty du är såsom Farao.
19 Min herre frågade sina tjänare och sade: 'Haven I eder fader eller någon broder ännu därhemma?'
20 Och vi svarade min herre: 'Vi hava en åldrig fader och en son till honom, en som är född på hans ålderdom och ännu är ung; men en broder till denne är död, så att han allena är kvar efter sin moder, och hans fader har honom kär.'
21 Då sade du till dina tjänare: 'Fören honom hitned till mig, så att jag kan låta mitt öga vila på honom.'
22 Och vi svarade min herre: 'Ynglingen kan icke lämna sin fader, ty om han lämnade sin fader, så skulle denne dö.'
23 Men du sade till dina tjänare: 'Om eder yngste broder icke följer med eder hitned, så fån I icke mer komma inför mitt ansikte.'
24 När vi därefter hade kommit hem till din tjänare, min fader, berättade vi för honom vad min herre hade sagt.
25 Och när sedan vår fader sade: 'Faren tillbaka och köpen litet säd till föda åt oss',
26 svarade vi: 'Vi kunna icke fara ditned; allenast på det villkoret vilja vi fara, att vår yngste broder följer med oss; ty vi få icke komma inför mannens ansikte om vår yngste broder icke är med oss.
27 Men din tjänare, min fader, sade till oss: 'I veten själva att min hustru har fött åt mig två söner,
28 och den ene gick bort ifrån mig, och jag sade: förvisso är han ihjälriven. Och jag har icke sett honom sedan den tiden.
29 Om I nu tagen också denne ifrån mig och någon olycka händer honom, så skolen I bringa mina grå hår med jämmer ned i dödsriket.'
30 Om jag alltså kommer hem till din tjänare, min fader, utan att vi hava med oss ynglingen, som vår faders hjärta är så fäst vid,
31 då bliver det hans död, när han ser att ynglingen icke är med; och dina tjänare skulle så bringa din tjänares, vår faders, grå hår med sorg ned i dödsriket.
32 Ty jag, din tjänare, har lovat min fader att ansvara för ynglingen och har sagt, att om jag icke för denne till honom igen, så vill jag vara en syndare inför min fader i all min tid.
33 Låt nu därför din tjänare stanna kvar hos min herre såsom träl, i ynglingens ställe, men låt ynglingen fara hem med sina bröder.
34 Ty huru skulle jag kunna fara hem till min fader utan att hava ynglingen med mig? Jag förmår icke se den jämmer som då skulle komma över min fader.»

Joseph’s Cup
44 And he commanded [a]the (A)steward of his house, saying, (B)“Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack. 2 Also put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain money.” So he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning dawned, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. 4 When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Get up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you (C)repaid evil for good? 5 Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and with which he indeed practices divination? You have done evil in so doing.’ ”
6 So he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words. 7 And they said to him, “Why does my lord say these words? Far be it from us that your servants should do such a thing. 8 Look, we brought back to you from the land of Canaan (D)the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? 9 With whomever of your servants it is found, (E)let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.”
10 And he said, “Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and you shall be blameless.” 11 Then each man speedily let down his sack to the ground, and each opened his sack. 12 So he searched. He began with the oldest and [b]left off with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they (F)tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city.
14 So Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, and he was still there; and they (G)fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said to them, “What deed is this you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly practice divination?”
16 Then Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has (H)found out the iniquity of your servants; here (I)we are, my lord’s slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup was found.”
17 But he said, (J)“Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my slave. And as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
Judah Intercedes for Benjamin
18 Then Judah came near to him and said: “O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s hearing, and (K)do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’ 20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and (L)a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is (M)dead, and he (N)alone is left of his mother’s children, and his (O)father loves him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, (P)‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ 22 And we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ 23 But you said to your servants, (Q)‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.’
24 “So it was, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord. 25 And (R)our father said, ‘Go back and buy us a little food.’ 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that (S)my wife bore me two sons; 28 and the one went out from me, and I said, (T)“Surely he is torn to pieces”; and I have not seen him since. 29 But if you (U)take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.’
30 “Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since (V)his life is bound up in the lad’s life, 31 it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, (W)‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.’ 33 Now therefore, please (X)let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. 34 For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would [c]come upon my father?”

Der verhängnisvolle Becher
44 Nach dem Essen gingen die Brüder in ihre Unterkunft. Als sie fort waren, sagte Josef zu seinem Hausverwalter: »Füll jeden Sack mit so viel Getreide, wie sie tragen können. Dann leg heimlich bei jedem das Geld wieder hinein. 2 Meinen silbernen Becher verstau in Benjamins Sack, zusammen mit seinem Geld!« Der Verwalter führte den Befehl aus.
3 Früh am nächsten Morgen ließ man die Brüder mit ihren voll bepackten Eseln wieder abreisen. 4 Sie hatten gerade erst die Stadt verlassen, da befahl Josef seinem Hausverwalter: »Schnell, jag den Männern hinterher! Wenn du sie eingeholt hast, frag sie: ›Warum habt ihr dieses Unrecht begangen, obwohl ihr so gut behandelt worden seid? 5 Warum habt ihr den silbernen Trinkbecher meines Herrn gestohlen, mit dessen Hilfe er die Zukunft voraussagt? Das ist ein Verbrechen!‹«
6 Der Verwalter eilte den Brüdern nach, und als er sie erreicht hatte, wiederholte er die Worte seines Herrn. 7 »Warum beschuldigst du uns so schwer?«, fragten sie ungläubig. »Niemals würden wir das tun! 8 Du weißt doch, dass wir das Geld zurückgebracht haben, das wir nach unserer ersten Reise in den Säcken fanden. Warum sollten wir jetzt Silber oder Gold aus dem Palast deines Herrn stehlen? 9 Wenn du bei einem von uns den Becher findest, dann soll er sterben! Und wir anderen werden für immer deinem Herrn als Sklaven dienen!«
10 »Gut«, erwiderte der Verwalter, »aber nur der soll ein Sklave werden, bei dem der Becher gefunden wird, die anderen sind frei.« 11 Hastig stellte jeder seinen Sack auf die Erde und öffnete ihn. 12 Der Verwalter durchsuchte alle Säcke sorgfältig, er ging der Reihe nach vom Ältesten bis zum Jüngsten, und schließlich fand er den Becher bei Benjamin. 13 Da zerrissen die Brüder ihre Kleider vor Verzweiflung, beluden ihre Esel und kehrten in die Stadt zurück.
14 Josef war noch in seinem Palast, als Juda und seine Brüder dort ankamen. Sie warfen sich vor ihm nieder. 15 »Warum habt ihr das versucht?«, stellte Josef sie zur Rede. »Ihr hättet wissen müssen, dass ein Mann wie ich so etwas durchschaut!« 16 Juda antwortete: »Was sollen wir jetzt noch zu unserer Verteidigung vorbringen? Es gibt nichts, womit wir uns rechtfertigen könnten. Gott hat eine Schuld von uns bestraft. Darum sind wir alle deine Sklaven – nicht nur der, bei dem dein Becher gefunden wurde!« 17 »Nein, auf keinen Fall!«, entgegnete Josef. »Nur der ist mein Sklave, der den Becher gestohlen hat, ihr anderen seid frei und könnt unbehelligt zu eurem Vater zurückkehren!«
18 Da trat Juda vor und sagte: »Herr, bitte höre mich an! Ich weiß, dass man dir nicht widersprechen darf, weil du der Stellvertreter des Pharaos bist. Bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich es trotzdem wage! 19 Herr, du hattest uns gefragt, ob wir noch einen Vater oder einen anderen Bruder haben. 20 Wir antworteten: ›Wir haben einen alten Vater und einen Bruder, der ihm noch im hohen Alter geboren wurde. Er ist der Jüngste von uns. Sein Bruder ist gestorben. Ihre Mutter war die Lieblingsfrau unseres Vaters und hatte nur diese zwei Söhne. Darum liebt unser Vater den Jüngsten besonders!‹ 21 Da hast du von uns verlangt, ihn herzubringen, um ihn mit eigenen Augen zu sehen. 22 Wir entgegneten: ›Herr, sein Vater würde sterben, wenn er ihn verließe!‹ 23 Du gingst nicht darauf ein und sagtest: ›Ohne ihn dürft ihr euch nicht mehr hier sehen lassen!‹ 24 Wir kehrten zu unserem Vater zurück und erzählten ihm alles. 25 Als er uns einige Zeit später aufforderte, wieder Getreide zu kaufen, 26 antworteten wir: ›Das geht nur, wenn du unseren jüngsten Bruder mitkommen lässt. Sonst können wir dem ägyptischen Herrscher nicht unter die Augen treten!‹ 27 Da sagte mein Vater zu uns: ›Ihr wisst doch, dass meine Lieblingsfrau nur zwei Söhne bekommen hat. 28 Der eine ist verschwunden – ich habe ihn nie wieder gesehen. Sicher hat ein wildes Tier ihn zerrissen! 29 Jetzt wollt ihr mir den anderen auch noch wegnehmen. Wenn ihm etwas zustößt, bringt ihr mich ins Grab!‹
30 Darum, Herr«, fuhr Juda fort, »wenn wir jetzt zu unserem Vater kommen ohne den Jungen, an dem er so hängt, 31 dann wird er vor Kummer sterben – und wir sind schuld daran! 32 Herr, ich habe bei meinem Vater die volle Verantwortung für den Jungen übernommen und gesagt: ›Wenn ich ihn dir nicht gesund zurückbringe, will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld dafür tragen!‹ 33 Darum bitte ich dich, Herr: Lass mich an seiner Stelle als dein Sklave hierbleiben und lass ihn mit seinen Brüdern zurückziehen! 34 Wie soll ich denn ohne den Jungen meinem Vater begegnen? Ich könnte seinen Schmerz nicht mit ansehen!«
