Joseph Tests His Brothers
44 Then he commanded (A)the steward of his house, (B)“Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack, 2 and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him.
3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys. 4 They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his (C)steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?[a] 5 Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and (D)by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’”
6 When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words. 7 They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! 8 Behold, (E)the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord's house? 9 (F)Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be (G)my lord's servants.” 10 He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.” 11 Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. 12 And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. 13 Then they (H)tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.
14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there. They (I)fell before him to the ground. 15 Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me (J)can indeed practice divination?” 16 And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out (K)the guilt of your servants; behold, we are (L)my lord's servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.” 17 But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
18 Then Judah went up to him and said, (M)“Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and (N)let not your anger burn against your servant, for (O)you are like Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’ 20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, (P)and a young brother, (Q)the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, (R)‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ 22 We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, (S)his father would die.’ 23 Then you said to your servants, (T)‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’
24 “When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And when (U)our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’ 26 we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me (V)two sons. 28 One left me, and I said, (W)“Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since. 29 If you (X)take this one also from me, (Y)and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’
30 “Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy's life, 31 as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. 32 For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, (Z)‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’ 33 Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers. 34 For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”

44 Después José ordenó a su mayordomo:
— Llena los costales de estos hombres con todos los víveres que les quepan y pon el dinero de cada uno de ellos en la boca de su costal. 2 Además, esconde mi copa, la de plata, en la boca del costal del hermano menor, junto con el dinero de la compra.
El mayordomo hizo lo que José le ordenó. 3 Con los primeros rayos del sol, dejaron partir a los hombres con sus asnos. 4 Todavía no estaban muy lejos de la ciudad, cuando José dijo a su mayordomo:
— Vete tras ellos y cuando los alcances diles:
— ¿Por qué habéis pagado mal por bien? 5 ¿Por qué habéis robado la copa que mi señor usa para beber y para adivinar? No debisteis obrar así.
6 Cuando el mayordomo los alcanzó, les repitió esas mismas palabras. 7 Pero ellos respondieron:
— ¿Por qué mi señor dice eso? ¡Lejos de nosotros hacer tal cosa! 8 Si vinimos desde Canaán a devolver el dinero que encontramos en la boca de nuestros costales, ¿por qué, entonces, habríamos de robar oro o plata de la casa de tu señor? 9 Si encuentras la copa en poder de alguno de nosotros, que muera el que la tenga; el resto de nosotros seremos esclavos de mi señor.
10 Entonces el mayordomo dijo:
— Que sea como decís, pero sólo el que tenga la copa será mi esclavo, los demás podréis marcharos.
11 Cada uno de ellos bajó aprisa su costal al suelo, y lo abrió. 12 El mayordomo registró cada costal, comenzando por el del hermano mayor y terminando por el del menor. ¡Y encontró la copa en el costal de Benjamín! 13 Al ver esto, ellos se rasgaron las vestiduras, volvieron a cargar cada uno su asno y regresaron a la ciudad.
14 Todavía estaba José en casa cuando llegaron Judá y los otros hermanos. Entonces se inclinaron rostro en tierra, 15 y José les preguntó:
— ¿Qué es lo que habéis hecho? ¿Acaso no sabéis que un hombre como yo tiene el don de adivinar?
16 Judá respondió:
— ¿Qué podemos responder a nuestro señor? ¿Qué palabras pronunciar? ¿Cómo podremos probar nuestra inocencia? Dios ha puesto al descubierto la culpa de tus siervos. Seremos tus esclavos, mi señor, tanto nosotros como aquel en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa.
17 Pero José dijo:
— ¡Lejos de mí hacer tal cosa! Sólo aquel en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa será mi esclavo. Los demás podéis regresar tranquilos a casa de vuestro padre.
Judá intercede por Benjamín
18 Entonces Judá se acercó a José y le dijo:
— Te ruego, mi señor, que permitas a este siervo tuyo hablarte en privado, sin que te enfades conmigo, porque tú eres como el faraón. 19 Cuando mi señor nos preguntó si todavía teníamos padre o algún hermano, 20 nosotros contestamos a mi señor que teníamos un padre anciano y un hijo que le nació ya en su vejez. Nuestro padre quiere muchísimo a este hijo porque es el único que le queda de la misma madre, ya que el otro murió. 21 Entonces, mi señor, nos pediste que lo trajéramos, porque querías verlo. 22 Nosotros dijimos a mi señor que el joven no podía dejar a su padre porque, si lo hacía, el padre moriría. 23 Pero mi señor insistió y nos advirtió que, si no traíamos a nuestro hermano menor, no seríamos recibidos por ti. 24 Entonces regresamos adonde vive tu siervo, mi padre, y le comunicamos las palabras de mi señor. 25 Y cuando nuestro padre nos mandó que volviéramos a comprar más alimento, 26 nosotros le respondimos que no podíamos bajar sin nuestro hermano menor, porque no seríamos recibidos por aquel hombre a no ser que nuestro hermano menor viniera con nosotros. 27 A lo que tu siervo, mi padre, respondió: “Ya sabéis que mi mujer me dio dos hijos; 28 uno de ellos se fue de mi lado y pienso que lo descuartizó una fiera, porque no he vuelto a verlo. 29 Si arrancáis de mi lado también al otro hijo y le pasa alguna desgracia, vosotros tendréis la culpa de que este pobre viejo se muera de pena”. 30 La vida, pues, de mi padre, tu siervo, está tan unida a la vida del muchacho que, si el muchacho no va con nosotros cuando yo regrese, 31 con toda seguridad mi padre, al no verlo, morirá y nosotros seremos los culpables de que nuestro padre muera de pena. 32 Este tu siervo se hizo responsable ante mi padre del cuidado del muchacho. Le dije que si no se lo devuelvo, la culpa será mía de por vida. 33 Por eso, ruego a mi señor permita que yo me quede como esclavo en lugar del muchacho, y que este regrese con sus hermanos. 34 ¿Cómo podría volver junto a mi padre, si el muchacho no va conmigo? Yo no podría soportar el dolor que sufriría mi padre.

44 मग योसेफाने आपल्या कारभाऱ्याला आज्ञा देऊन म्हटले, “या लोकांच्या पोत्यात जेवढे अधिक धान्य मावेल व त्यांना देता येईल तेवढे भर; आणि त्या सोबत प्रत्येकाचे पैसेही त्या पोत्यात ठेव. 2 सर्वात धाकट्या भावाच्या पोत्यात पैशाबरोबर माझा विशेष चांदीचा प्यालाही ठेव.” त्याच्या कारभाऱ्याने त्याच्या आज्ञाप्रमाणे सर्वकाही केले.

7 परंतु ते भाऊ कारभाऱ्याला म्हणाले, “स्वामी असे का बरे बोलतात? आम्ही कधीच अशा गोष्टी करीत नाही! 8 मागे आमच्या पोत्यात मिळालेले पैसे आम्ही आता येताना आठवणीने आणले; तेव्हा खात्रीने आपल्या स्वामीच्या घरातून आम्ही सोने किंवा चांदी चोरणार नाही. 9 या उपर आम्हापैकी कोणाच्या पोत्यात तुम्हाला जर तो चांदीचा प्याला मिळाला तर तो भाऊ मरेल; तुम्ही त्याला मारून टाकावे आणि मग आम्ही सर्वजण आमच्या स्वामीचे गुलाम होऊ.”
10 कारभारी म्हणाला, “ठीक आहे, तुम्ही म्हणता त्याप्रमाणे आपण करु. जर मला चांदीचा प्याला मिळाला तर मग तो माणूस माझ्या धन्याचा गुलाम होईल; इतर जण जाण्यास मोकळे राहतील.”

11 नंतर हर एक भावाने लगेच आपली गोणी जमिनीवर उतरुन उघडली. 12 कारभाऱ्याने थोरल्या भावापासून सुरवात करुन धाकटया भावाच्या गोणीपर्यंत तपासून पाहिले; तेव्हा त्याला बन्यामीनाच्या गोणीत तो चांदीचा प्याला मिळाला. 13 तेव्हा त्या भावांना भयंकर दु:ख झाले; अति दु:खामुळे त्यांनी आपली वस्त्रे फाडली आणि आपल्या गोण्या गाढवांवर लादून ते परत नगरात आले.
14 यहूदा व त्याचे भाऊ परत योसेफाच्या घरी गेले. योसेफ अजून घरातच होता. त्या भावांनी योसेफापुढे लोटांगण घातले. 15 योसफ त्यांना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही असे का केले? मला शकून पाहून गुप्त समजण्याचे विशेष ज्ञान आहे हे तुम्हाला माहीत नाही का? आणि या बाबतीत माझ्यापेक्षा अधिक चांगले ज्ञान इतर कोणालाही नाही!”
16 यहूदा म्हणाला, “महाराज! आम्ही आता काहीच बोलू शकत नाही, व याचा उलगडा करण्याचा दुसरा मार्ग नाही. आम्ही अपराधी नाही हे पटविण्यास दुसरा कोणताच मार्ग नाही. आमच्या दुसऱ्या कोणत्यातरी अपराधाबद्दल देवाने आम्हाला दोषी ठरवले आहे. म्हणून आता बन्यामीनासकट आम्ही सर्वजण महाराजांचे गुलाम झालो आहोत.”

25 “काही दिवसानंतर आमचा बाप म्हणाला, ‘मुलांनो, पुन्हा जाऊन आपणासाठी धान्य विकत आणा.’ 26 आणि आम्ही म्हणालो, ‘आम्ही आमच्या धाकट्या भावाला बरोबर घेतल्याशिवाय जाणार नाही कारण तुमच्या धाकट्या भावाला माझ्याकडे आणल्या खेरीज मी पुन्हा तुम्हाला धान्य विकणार नाही असे त्या प्रमुख अधिकाऱ्याने आम्हास बजावले आहे.’ 27 मग आमचा बाप आम्हाला म्हणाला, ‘मुलांनो, तुम्हाला माहीत आहे की माझी बायको राहेल हिच्या पोटी मला दोन मुलगे झाले; 28 आणि त्यातल्या एकाला मी पाहिले तो वन्यपशूद्वारे मारला गेला. पुन्हा तो कोणाच्या दष्टीस पडला नाही. 29 आणि आता माझ्या ह्या दुसऱ्या मुलाला तुम्ही माझ्यापासून घेऊन गेला आणि त्याला जर काही अपाय झाला तर मी भयंकर दु:खी होऊन मरुन जाईन.’ 30 तो मुलगा आमच्या बापाच्या आयुष्यात फार महत्वाचा आहे तेव्हा आता जर का आम्ही आमच्या धाकटया भावाशिवाय घरी गेलो आणि आमच्या बापाने हे पाहिले तर 31 आमचा धाकटा भाऊ आमच्या बरोबर नाही असे पाहून आमचा बाप नक्की मरुन जाईल; आणि आपल्या बापाला भयंकर दु:ख देऊन त्याच्या मरणास आम्ही कारण झालो हा दोष सतत आमच्या माथ्यावर राहील.
32 “हया धाकट्या भावाबद्दल मी माझ्या बापास जामीन राहिलो आहे. मी माझ्या बापास सांगितले, ‘जर मी माझ्या धाकट्या भावाला तुम्हाकडे परत घेऊन आलो नाही तर मग जन्मभर मी तुमचा दोषी राहीन.’ 33 तेव्हा महाराज, मी हात जोडूत तुमची काकूळतीने विनवणी करतो; तुम्हापाशी भिक्षा मागतो, त्या घाकट्या मुलाला त्याच्या भावांबरोबर परत जाऊ द्या. मी येथे राहातो आणि तुमचा गुलाम होतो माझे स्वामी! 34 आणि त्या धाकटया भावशिवाय माझ्या बापाकडे माघारी जाण्याची माझ्यात हिंमत नाही! माझ्या बापाचे काय होईल याची मला भयंकर भीती वाटते, हो स्वामी!”
