44 約瑟吩咐管家說：“把糧食裝滿這些人的布袋，要盡他們所能攜帶的，又把各人的銀子放在他們的袋口； 2 把我的銀杯，放在最小的袋口，連同他買糧食的銀子放進去。”管家就照著約瑟吩咐的話去作。 3 早晨天一亮，那些人和他們的驢子都被打發走了。 4 他們出了城，走了不遠，約瑟就對管家說：“起來，追趕那些人；追上了，就對他們說：‘你為甚麼以惡報善呢？ 5 這不是我主人喝酒和占卜用的杯嗎？你們所作的，實在不對。’”
6 管家追上了他們，就對他們說了這些話。 7 他們對管家說：“我主為甚麼說這樣的話呢？你的僕人絕不會作這樣的事。 8 你看，我們從前在袋口發現的銀子，尚且從迦南地帶來還給你，我們又怎會從你主人的家裡偷取金銀呢？ 9 在你僕人當中，無論在誰那裡搜出來，誰就要死，我們也要作我主的奴僕。” 10 管家說：“現在就照你們的話作吧，只是在誰那裡搜出來，誰就要作我的奴僕，其餘的人都沒有罪。” 11 於是，他們急忙把自己的布袋卸在地上，各人打開自己的布袋。 12 管家就搜查，從最大的開始，查到最小的。那杯竟在便雅憫的布袋裡搜出來了。 13 他們就撕裂自己的衣服，各人又把擔子馱在驢上，回城去了。

18 猶大走近約瑟身邊，說：“我主啊，求你容許僕人說一句話給我主聽，請不要向僕人發烈怒，因為你好像法老一樣。 19 我主曾經問僕人們說：‘你們還有父親或其他兄弟沒有？’ 20 我們曾經回答我主：‘我們還有年老的父親和最小的弟弟，是他年老時所生的。他的哥哥死了，他母親只剩下他一個孩子，他父親非常愛他。’ 21 你就對僕人們說：‘把他帶下來到我這裡，我要親眼看看他。’ 22 我們對我主說：‘那孩子是不能離開他父親的；如果離開了，他父親必定死。’ 23 你對僕人們說：‘如果你們最小的弟弟不與你們一同下來，你們就不得見我的面。’ 24 於是，我們上到你僕人我們的父親那裡，就把我主的話告訴了他。 25 後來我們的父親說：‘你們再去替我們買些糧食回來吧。’ 26 我們就說：‘我們不能下去，如果有我們最小的弟弟與我們同去，我們就下去；因為我們最小的弟弟不與我們同去，我們就不得見那人的面。’ 27 你僕人我的父親對我們說：‘你們知道我的妻子只給我生了兩個兒子。 28 一個已經離開我去了，我想他必定是被野獸撕碎了；直到現在，我也沒有見過他。 29 現在你們又要把這個從我面前帶去，如果他遇到不幸，你們就使我這個白髮老人，悲悲慘慘地下陰間去了。’ 30 我父親的命與這孩子的命，是相連在一起的。現在我回到你僕人我的父親那裡，如果沒有孩子與我們在一起， 31 他一見沒有孩子，就必定死；這樣，你僕人們就使你僕人我們的父親，這個白髮老人，愁愁苦苦地下陰間去了。 32 因為僕人曾經向父親擔保這孩子的安全，說：‘如果我不把他帶回來交還給你，我就在父親面前終生承擔這罪。’ 33 現在求你容許僕人留下，代替這孩子作我主的奴僕，讓這孩子與他的哥哥們一同上去。 34 因為如果孩子沒有與我同去，我怎能上去見我的父親呢？恐怕我會看見災禍臨到我父親身上。”

Joseph’s Final Test
44 Then Joseph commanded his steward: “Fill the men’s bags with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s money at the top of his bag.(A) 2 Put my cup, the silver one, at the top of the youngest one’s bag, along with his grain money.” So he did as Joseph told him.
3 At morning light, the men were sent off with their donkeys. 4 They had not gone very far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Get up. Pursue the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?[a] 5 Isn’t this the cup that my master drinks from and uses for divination?(B) What you have done is wrong!’”
6 When he overtook them, he said these words to them. 7 They said to him, “Why does my lord say these things? Your servants could not possibly do such a thing. 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money we found at the top of our bags. How could we steal gold and silver from your master’s house? 9 If any of us is[b] found to have it, he must die, and we also will become my lord’s slaves.”(C)
10 The steward replied, “What you have said is right, but only the one who is found to have it will be my slave, and the rest of you will be blameless.”
11 So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 The steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they tore their clothes,(D) and each one loaded his donkey and returned to the city.
14 When Judah and his brothers reached Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell to the ground before him.(E) 15 “What is this you have done?” Joseph said to them. “Didn’t you know that a man like me could uncover the truth by divination?”
16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed your servants’ iniquity. We are now my lord’s slaves—both we and the one in whose possession the cup was found.”
17 Then Joseph said, “I swear that I will not do this. The man in whose possession the cup was found will be my slave. The rest of you can go in peace to your father.”
Judah’s Plea for Benjamin
18 But Judah approached him and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord.[c] Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh.(F) 19 My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’ 20 and we answered my lord, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age.(G) The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me so that I can see him.’(H) 22 But we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’ 23 Then you said to your servants, ‘If your younger brother does not come down with you, you will not see me again.’(I)
24 “This is what happened when we went back to your servant my father: We reported your words to him. 25 But our father said, ‘Go again, and buy us some food.’(J) 26 We told him, ‘We cannot go down unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother isn’t with us, we cannot see the man.’ 27 Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28 One left—I said that he must have been torn to pieces—and I have never seen him again.(K) 29 If you also take this one from me and anything happens to him, you will bring my gray hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.’(L)
30 “So if I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us—his life is wrapped up with the boy’s life— 31 when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hairs of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow. 32 Your servant became accountable to my father for the boy, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will always bear the guilt for sinning against you, my father.’(M) 33 Now please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave, in place of the boy. Let him go back with his brothers. 34 For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the grief that would overwhelm my father.”

44 Giô-sép ra chỉ thị cho quản gia: “Những người đó chở được bao nhiêu thì hãy đổ đầy lương thực trong bao họ bấy nhiêu, rồi để bạc của mỗi người lại trong bao của họ. 2 Cũng hãy để cái chén bạc của ta nơi miệng bao chung với số bạc mua lúa của người em út.” Quản gia vâng lời làm mọi điều Giô-sép căn dặn.
3 Hôm sau trời vừa sáng họ cho các người đó cưỡi lừa ra đi. 4 Họ ra khỏi thành chưa xa, Giô-sép bảo quản gia: “Hãy đuổi theo những người đó, khi bắt kịp thì nói: ‘Tại sao các ngươi lấy oán trả ơn? 5 Phải chăng đây là cái chén mà chủ ta thường dùng để uống rượu và bói toán? Các ngươi đã làm một việc gian ác!’ ”
6 Khi bắt kịp, quản gia lặp lại những lời đó. 7 Nhưng họ đáp: “Tại sao ngài trách chúng tôi như thế? Chẳng bao giờ các tôi tớ ngài làm như thế cả. 8 Chúng tôi đã mang cho ngài số bạc tìm được trong miệng bao từ xứ Ca-na-an xuống đây. Lẽ nào chúng tôi lại ăn cắp bạc hoặc vàng trong nhà chủ ngài sao? 9 Nếu người ta tìm được cái chén ấy trong bất cứ người nào trong vòng chúng tôi là tôi tớ ngài, thì người đó phải chết còn chúng tôi xin làm nô lệ cho ngài.”
10 Quản gia đáp: “Được, hãy làm như điều các ngươi nói. Ta tìm được cái chén ấy nơi ai thì người đó sẽ làm nô lệ cho ta; còn các ngươi không có gì đáng trách.”
11 Mỗi người vội vã hạ bao mình xuống đất và mở ra. 12 Quản gia bắt đầu lục từ người anh cả đến người em út, và tìm được cái chén trong bao của Bên-gia-min. 13 Họ liền xé áo mình, mỗi người chất lại bao lúa trên lừa mình rồi cùng quay lại thành.
14 Giô-sép vẫn còn ở nhà khi Giu-đa và các anh em bước vào. Họ sấp mình xuống đất trước mặt ông. 15 Giô-sép trách: “Các ngươi làm chi vậy! Các ngươi không biết một người như ta có tài bói sao?”
16 Giu-đa đáp: “Chúng tôi sẽ thưa với chúa làm sao, trình bày làm sao, biện minh làm sao? Đức Chúa Trời đã khám phá tội ác của chúng tôi rồi. Bây giờ chúng tôi xin làm nô lệ cho chúa. Tất cả chúng tôi lẫn người đã bị bắt quả tang có chén.”
17 Nhưng Giô-sép đáp: “Ta chẳng bao giờ muốn làm điều như thế. Chỉ kẻ nào bị bắt được quả tang có chén mới làm nô lệ cho ta, còn các ngươi cứ về nhà cha mình bình an.”
18 Giu-đa tiến lên gần Giô-sép mà nói: “Thưa chúa, xin cho phép kẻ tôi tớ chúa được thưa một lời với chúa. Xin đừng nổi giận cùng kẻ tôi tớ chúa dù chúa ngang vai với Pha-ra-ôn. 19 Chúa tôi đã hỏi các tôi tớ chúa: ‘Các ngươi còn có cha hay anh em nào không?’ 20 Chúng tôi đã thưa: ‘Chúng tôi còn cha già và một đứa em út sinh ra trong lúc người đã tuổi cao tác lớn. Anh ruột nó đã chết, trong các con của mẹ nó chỉ còn một mình nó và cha thương nó lắm.’
21 Lúc ấy chúa bảo: ‘Hãy đưa nó xuống với ta để ta được thấy tận mắt.’ 22 Chúng tôi đã thưa với chúa: ‘Đứa trẻ không thể nào lìa cha được; nếu nó rời cha thì cha sẽ chết.’ 23 Nhưng chúa lại dạy: ‘Nếu em út các ngươi không xuống với các ngươi thì các ngươi chẳng bao giờ được thấy mặt ta nữa.’ 24 Nên khi chúng tôi quay về nơi kẻ tôi tớ chúa là cha tôi, chúng tôi có thuật lại cho người nghe lời chúa dạy.
25 Sau đó cha chúng tôi bảo: ‘Các con hãy trở xuống để mua ít lương thực.’ 26 Chúng tôi thưa lại: ‘Không thể nào được, chỉ khi nào em út đi với chúng con thì chúng con mới xuống đó được. Còn không, chúng con chẳng bao giờ được thấy lại mặt người đó.’
27 Kẻ tôi tớ chúa là cha tôi đáp: ‘Các con biết vợ ta sinh cho ta hai đứa con trai. 28 Một đứa đã biệt tích nên ta nói chắc nó bị thú dữ xé xác rồi; vì từ đó ta chẳng bao giờ thấy nó nữa. 29 Nếu các con cũng đem đứa này xa cha và nếu có điều không may xảy đến cho nó, thì các con sẽ làm cho đầu bạc này đau lòng xót dạ mà xuống mồ.’
30 Bây giờ, nếu em út không theo chúng tôi trở về với kẻ tôi tớ chúa là cha tôi, vì cha tôi đã khắng khít với em út tôi là thế, 31 nếu bây giờ thấy đứa trẻ không còn đó nữa chắc người sẽ chết, và các tôi tớ chúa sẽ làm cho đầu bạc của cha chúng tôi đau lòng xót dạ xuống mồ. 32 Vì kẻ tôi tớ này của chúa đã bảo đảm an ninh cho em út trước mặt cha. ‘Nếu con không đem em con về cho cha thì con sẽ mang tội cùng cha suốt đời.’

A Silver Cup in a Sack
44 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house:(A) “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.(B) 2 Then put my cup,(C) the silver one,(D) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.
3 As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.(E) 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward,(F) “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?(G) 5 Isn’t this the cup(H) my master drinks from and also uses for divination?(I) This is a wicked thing you have done.’”
6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants(J) to do anything like that!(K) 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan(L) the silver(M) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.(N) So why would we steal(O) silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants(P) is found to have it, he will die;(Q) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.(R)”
10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it(S) will become my slave;(T) the rest of you will be free from blame.”(U)
11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward(V) proceeded to search,(W) beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.(X) And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.(Y) 13 At this, they tore their clothes.(Z) Then they all loaded their donkeys(AA) and returned to the city.
14 Joseph was still in the house(AB) when Judah(AC) and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.(AD) 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done?(AE) Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?(AF)”
16 “What can we say to my lord?(AG)” Judah(AH) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?(AI) God has uncovered your servants’(AJ) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves(AK)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.(AL)”
17 But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing!(AM) Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.(AN) The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”(AO)
18 Then Judah(AP) went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AQ) let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry(AR) with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants,(AS) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’(AT) 20 And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age.(AU) His brother is dead,(AV) and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’(AW)
21 “Then you said to your servants,(AX) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’(AY) 22 And we said to my lord,(AZ) ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’(BA) 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’(BB) 24 When we went back to your servant my father,(BC) we told him what my lord(BD) had said.(BE)
25 “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’(BF) 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’(BG)
27 “Your servant my father(BH) said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.(BI) 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.”(BJ) And I have not seen him since.(BK) 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(BL) in misery.’(BM)
30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father,(BN) and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,(BO) 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.(BP) Your servants(BQ) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave(BR) in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’(BS)
33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave(BT) in place of the boy,(BU) and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery(BV) that would come on my father.”(BW)
