Genesis 44:8-10

Good News Translation

⁸You know that we brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money we found in the top of our sacks. Why then should we steal silver or gold from your master's house? ⁹Sir, if any one of us is found to have it, he will be put to death, and the rest of us will become your slaves.”

¹⁰He said, “I agree; but only the one who has taken the cup will become my slave, and the rest of you can go free.”

New International Version

⁸We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan^(A) the silver^(B) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.^(C) So why would we steal^(D) silver or gold from your master’s house? ⁹If any of your servants^(E) is found to have it, he will die;^(F) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.^(G)”

¹⁰“Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it^(H) will become my slave;^(I) the rest of you will be free from blame.”^(J)
