Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dream
41 After two whole years, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile, 2 and there came up out of the Nile seven sleek and fat cows, and they grazed in the reed grass. 3 Then seven other cows, ugly and thin, came up out of the Nile after them, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. 4 The ugly and thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. And Pharaoh awoke. 5 Then he fell asleep and dreamed a second time; seven ears of grain, plump and good, were growing on one stalk. 6 Then seven ears, thin and blighted by the east wind, sprouted after them. 7 The thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. Pharaoh awoke, and it was a dream. 8 In the morning his spirit was troubled; so he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.
9 Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “I remember my faults today. 10 Once Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me and the chief baker in custody in the house of the captain of the guard. 11 We dreamed on the same night, he and I, each having a dream with its own meaning. 12 A young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. When we told him, he interpreted our dreams to us, giving an interpretation to each according to his dream. 13 As he interpreted to us, so it turned out; I was restored to my office, and the baker was hanged.”
14 Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was hurriedly brought out of the dungeon. When he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came in before Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, “It is not I; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.” 17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream I was standing on the banks of the Nile; 18 and seven cows, fat and sleek, came up out of the Nile and fed in the reed grass. 19 Then seven other cows came up after them, poor, very ugly, and thin. Never had I seen such ugly ones in all the land of Egypt. 20 The thin and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows, 21 but when they had eaten them no one would have known that they had done so, for they were still as ugly as before. Then I awoke. 22 I fell asleep a second time[a] and I saw in my dream seven ears of grain, full and good, growing on one stalk, 23 and seven ears, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprouting after them; 24 and the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. But when I told it to the magicians, there was no one who could explain it to me.”
25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same; God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dreams are one. 27 The seven lean and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, as are the seven empty ears blighted by the east wind. They are seven years of famine. 28 It is as I told Pharaoh; God has shown to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 29 There will come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. 30 After them there will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine will consume the land. 31 The plenty will no longer be known in the land because of the famine that will follow, for it will be very grievous. 32 And the doubling of Pharaoh’s dream means that the thing is fixed by God, and God will shortly bring it about. 33 Now therefore let Pharaoh select a man who is discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land, and take one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven plenteous years. 35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and lay up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. 36 That food shall be a reserve for the land against the seven years of famine that are to befall the land of Egypt, so that the land may not perish through the famine.”
Joseph’s Rise to Power
37 The proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants. 38 Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find anyone else like this—one in whom is the spirit of God?” 39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command; only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” 42 Removing his signet ring from his hand, Pharaoh put it on Joseph’s hand; he arrayed him in garments of fine linen, and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 He had him ride in the chariot of his second-in-command; and they cried out in front of him, “Bow the knee!”[b] Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt. 44 Moreover Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” 45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, as his wife. Thus Joseph gained authority over the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went through all the land of Egypt. 47 During the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly. 48 He gathered up all the food of the seven years when there was plenty[c] in the land of Egypt, and stored up food in the cities; he stored up in every city the food from the fields around it. 49 So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance—like the sand of the sea—that he stopped measuring it; it was beyond measure.
50 Before the years of famine came, Joseph had two sons, whom Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. 51 Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh,[d] “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” 52 The second he named Ephraim,[e] “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my misfortunes.”
53 The seven years of plenty that prevailed in the land of Egypt came to an end; 54 and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in every country, but throughout the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do.” 56 And since the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses,[f] and sold to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. 57 Moreover, all the world came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine became severe throughout the world.

41 (A)Alla fine di due anni interi, il faraone fece un sogno. Egli stava presso il Fiume; 2 e dal Fiume ecco salire sette vacche, di bell’aspetto e grasse, che si misero a pascolare nella giuncaia. 3 Dopo quelle, ecco salire dal Fiume altre sette vacche di brutto aspetto e scarne, che si fermarono accanto alle prime, sulla riva del Fiume. 4 Le vacche di brutto aspetto e scarne divorarono le sette vacche di bell’aspetto e grasse. E il faraone si svegliò.
5 Poi si riaddormentò e sognò di nuovo: ecco sette spighe, grosse e belle, venir su da un unico stelo. 6 Poi, ecco germogliare sette spighe sottili e arse dal vento orientale che germogliavano dopo quelle altre. 7 Le spighe sottili inghiottirono le sette spighe grosse e piene. E il faraone si svegliò: era un sogno. 8 La mattina lo spirito del faraone fu turbato; egli mandò a chiamare tutti i maghi e tutti i savi d’Egitto e raccontò loro i suoi sogni, ma non ci fu nessuno che li potesse interpretare al faraone.
9 Allora il capo dei coppieri parlò al faraone, dicendo: «Ricordo oggi le mie colpe. 10 Il faraone si era sdegnato contro i suoi servitori e mi aveva fatto mettere in prigione, nella casa del capo delle guardie, me e il capo dei panettieri. 11 L’uno e l’altro facemmo un sogno nella stessa notte; facemmo ciascuno un sogno con un significato particolare. 12 Lì con noi c’era un giovane Ebreo, servo del capo delle guardie; a lui raccontammo i nostri sogni ed egli ce li interpretò, dando a ciascuno l’interpretazione del suo sogno. 13 E le cose avvennero secondo l’interpretazione che egli ci aveva data: il faraone ristabilì me nel mio incarico e l’altro lo fece impiccare».
14 Allora il faraone mandò a chiamare Giuseppe. Lo fecero subito uscire dalla prigione sotterranea. Egli si rase, si cambiò il vestito e andò dal faraone. 15 Il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Ho fatto un sogno e non c’è chi lo possa interpretare. Ho udito dire di te che, quando ti raccontano un sogno, tu lo puoi interpretare». 16 Giuseppe rispose al faraone dicendo: «Non sono io, ma sarà Dio che darà al faraone una risposta favorevole».
17 Allora il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Nel mio sogno io stavo sulla riva del Fiume; 18 quand’ecco salire dal Fiume sette vacche grasse e di bell’aspetto e che si misero a pascolare nella giuncaia. 19 Dopo quelle, ecco salire altre sette vacche, magre, di bruttissimo aspetto e scarne: tali che non ne vidi mai di così brutte in tutto il paese d’Egitto. 20 Le vacche magre e brutte divorarono le prime sette vacche grasse; 21 e queste entrarono loro in corpo e non si riconobbe che vi erano entrate; erano di brutto aspetto come prima. E mi svegliai. 22 Poi vidi ancora nel mio sogno sette spighe venire su da un unico stelo, piene e belle; 23 ed ecco germogliare altre sette spighe, vuote, sottili e arse dal vento orientale, dopo quelle altre. 24 Le spighe sottili inghiottirono le sette spighe belle. Io ho raccontato questo ai maghi, ma non c’è stato nessuno che abbia saputo spiegarmelo».
25 Allora Giuseppe disse al faraone: «Ciò che il faraone ha sognato è una stessa cosa. Dio ha indicato al faraone quello che sta per fare. 26 Le sette vacche belle sono sette anni e le sette spighe belle sono sette anni; è uno stesso sogno. 27 Le sette vacche magre e brutte che salivano dopo quelle altre sono sette anni, come pure le sette spighe vuote e arse dal vento orientale saranno sette anni di carestia. 28 Questo è quello che ho detto al faraone: Dio ha mostrato al faraone quello che sta per fare. 29 Ecco, stanno per venire sette anni di grande abbondanza in tutto il paese d’Egitto. 30 Dopo verranno sette anni di carestia; tutta quell’abbondanza sarà dimenticata nel paese d’Egitto e la carestia consumerà il paese. 31 Uno non conoscerà più di quell’abbondanza nel paese, a causa della carestia che seguirà, perché questa sarà molto dura. 32 Il fatto che il sogno si sia ripetuto due volte al faraone vuol dire che la cosa è decretata da Dio e che Dio l’eseguirà presto. 33 Or dunque il faraone si provveda di un uomo intelligente e saggio, e lo stabilisca sul paese d’Egitto. 34 Il faraone faccia così: costituisca dei commissari sul paese per prelevare il quinto delle raccolte del paese d’Egitto durante i sette anni d’abbondanza. 35 Essi raccolgano tutti i viveri di queste sette annate buone che stanno per venire e ammassino il grano a disposizione del faraone per l’approvvigionamento delle città, e lo conservino. 36 Questi viveri saranno una riserva per il paese, in vista dei sette anni di carestia che verranno nella terra d’Egitto; così il paese non perirà per la carestia».
Giuseppe fatto vicerè d’Egitto
37 (B)La cosa piacque al faraone e a tutti i suoi servitori. 38 Il faraone disse ai suoi servitori: «Potremmo forse trovare un uomo pari a questo, in cui sia lo Spirito di Dio?» 39 Così il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Poiché Dio ti ha fatto conoscere tutto questo, non c’è nessuno che sia intelligente e savio quanto te. 40 Tu avrai autorità su tutta la mia casa e tutto il popolo ubbidirà ai tuoi ordini; per il trono soltanto io sarò più grande di te». 41 Il faraone disse ancora a Giuseppe: «Vedi, io ti do potere su tutto il paese d’Egitto». 42 Poi il faraone si tolse l’anello dal dito e lo mise al dito di Giuseppe; lo fece vestire di abiti di lino fino e gli mise al collo una collana d’oro. 43 Lo fece salire sul suo secondo carro e davanti a lui si gridava: «In ginocchio!» Così il faraone gli diede autorità su tutto il paese d’Egitto. 44 Il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Io sono il faraone! Ma senza tuo ordine, nessuno alzerà la mano o il piede in tutto il paese d’Egitto».
45 Il faraone chiamò Giuseppe Safnat-Paneac[a] e gli diede per moglie Asenat, figlia di Potifera, sacerdote di On. Giuseppe partì per visitare il paese d’Egitto. 46 Giuseppe aveva trent’anni quando si presentò davanti al faraone, re d’Egitto. Giuseppe uscì dalla presenza del faraone e percorse tutto il paese d’Egitto.
47 Durante i sette anni di abbondanza la terra produsse a profusione. 48 Giuseppe raccolse tutti i viveri che furono prodotti nel paese d’Egitto in quei sette anni e li immagazzinò nelle città; immagazzinò in ogni città i viveri del territorio circostante. 49 Così Giuseppe ammassò grano come la sabbia del mare: in così gran quantità, che si smise di contarlo, perché era incalcolabile.
Nascita di Manasse e di Efraim
50 (C)Prima che venisse il primo anno della carestia, nacquero a Giuseppe due figli, che Asenat, figlia di Potifera, sacerdote di On, gli partorì. 51 Giuseppe chiamò il primogenito Manasse[b], perché disse: «Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare ogni mio affanno e tutta la casa di mio padre». 52 Il secondo lo chiamò Efraim[c], perché, disse: «Dio mi ha reso fecondo nel paese della mia afflizione».
53 I sette anni d’abbondanza che c’erano stati nel paese d’Egitto finirono 54 e cominciarono a venire i sette anni di carestia, come Giuseppe aveva detto. Ci fu carestia in tutti i paesi, ma in tutto il paese d’Egitto c’era del pane. 55 Poi la carestia si estese a tutto il paese d’Egitto e il popolo gridò al faraone per avere del pane. Il faraone disse a tutti gli Egiziani: «Andate da Giuseppe e fate quello che vi dirà». 56 La carestia era su tutta la superficie del paese e Giuseppe aprì tutti i depositi e vendette grano agli Egiziani. La carestia s’aggravò nel paese d’Egitto. 57 Da tutti i paesi venivano in Egitto, da Giuseppe, per comprare grano, perché la carestia era grave su tutta la terra.

41 Es geschah aber nach zwei Jahren, da hatte der Pharao einen Traum, und siehe, er stand am Nil[a].
2 Und siehe, aus dem Nil stiegen sieben schöne und wohlgenährte Kühe herauf, die im Nilgras weideten.
3 Und siehe, nach diesen stiegen sieben andere Kühe aus dem Nil herauf, von hässlicher Gestalt und magerem Leib; die traten neben jene Kühe am Ufer des Nils.
4 Und die sieben hässlichen, mageren Kühe fraßen die sieben schönen, wohlgenährten Kühe. Da erwachte der Pharao.
5 Er schlief aber wieder ein und träumte zum zweiten Mal, und siehe, da wuchsen sieben Ähren auf einem einzigen Halm, die waren voll und gut;
6 und siehe, nach diesen, da sprossten sieben Ähren, die waren dünn und vom Ostwind versengt.
7 Und die dünnen Ähren verschlangen die sieben schweren und vollen Ähren. Da erwachte der Pharao, und siehe, es war ein Traum!
8 Und es geschah am Morgen, da war sein Geist beunruhigt. Und er sandte hin und ließ alle Wahrsager[b] Ägyptens rufen und alle seine Weisen. Und der Pharao erzählte ihnen seinen Traum; aber da war keiner, der ihn dem Pharao deuten konnte.
9 Da sprach der oberste Mundschenk zum Pharao: Ich erinnere mich heute an meine Sünden!
10 Als der Pharao zornig war über seine Knechte und mich in Haft setzte im Haus des Obersten der Leibwache, mich und den obersten Bäcker,
11 da hatten wir in ein und derselben Nacht einen Traum, er und ich; jeder hatte einen Traum von besonderer Bedeutung.
12 Und dort war ein hebräischer junger Mann bei uns, ein Knecht des Obersten der Leibwache; dem erzählten wir es, und er deutete unsere Träume; jedem deutete er seinen Traum besonders.
13 Und so, wie er es uns deutete, so ist es gekommen: Mich hat man wieder in mein Amt eingesetzt, und ihn hat man gehängt!
14 Da sandte der Pharao hin und ließ Joseph rufen. Und sie entließen ihn schnell aus dem Loch. Er aber ließ sich scheren und wechselte seine Kleider und ging zum Pharao hinein.
Joseph deutet die Träume des Pharao
15 Und der Pharao sprach zu Joseph: Ich habe einen Traum gehabt, aber es kann ihn niemand deuten; nun habe ich über dich vernommen, dass du einen Traum zu deuten vermagst, wenn du ihn hörst.
16 Joseph antwortete dem Pharao und sprach: Das steht nicht bei mir. Gott wird verkündigen, was dem Pharao zum Wohl dient!
17 Da sprach der Pharao zu Joseph: Siehe, in meinem Traum stand ich am Ufer des Nils;
18 und siehe, da stiegen aus dem Nil sieben wohlgenährte Kühe von schöner Gestalt herauf, die im Nilgras weideten.
19 Und siehe, nach ihnen stiegen sieben andere Kühe herauf, dürftig und von sehr hässlicher Gestalt und magerem Leib; im ganzen Land Ägypten habe ich keine so hässlichen gesehen.
20 Und diese mageren, hässlichen Kühe fraßen die sieben ersten, wohlgenährten Kühe.
21 Als sie aber diese verschlungen hatten, merkte man nichts davon; denn sie waren so hässlich wie zuvor. Da erwachte ich.
22 Und ich sah [weiter] in meinem Traum, und siehe, sieben volle und gute Ähren wuchsen auf an einem einzigen Halm.
23 Und siehe, nach ihnen sprossten sieben dürre Ähren hervor, mager und vom Ostwind versengt;
24 und die mageren Ähren verschlangen die sieben guten Ähren. Und ich habe es den Wahrsagern erzählt, aber keiner kann es mir erklären!
25 Da sprach Joseph zum Pharao: Was der Pharao geträumt hat, bedeutet dasselbe:[c] Gott hat den Pharao wissen lassen, was er tun will.
26 Die sieben schönen Kühe sind[d] sieben Jahre, und die sieben schönen Ähren sind auch sieben Jahre; es ist ein und derselbe Traum.
27 Die sieben mageren und hässlichen Kühe, die nach jenen heraufkamen, sind sieben Jahre; ebenso die sieben leeren, vom Ostwind versengten Ähren; es werden sieben Hungerjahre sein.
28 Darum sagte ich zu dem Pharao: Gott hat den Pharao sehen lassen, was er tun will.
29 Siehe, es kommen sieben Jahre, da wird großer Überfluss herrschen im ganzen Land Ägypten.
30 Aber nach ihnen werden sieben Hungerjahre eintreten, und all dieser Überfluss wird vergessen sein im Land Ägypten; und die Hungersnot wird das Land aufzehren,
31 sodass man nichts mehr merken wird von dem Überfluss im Land wegen der Hungersnot, die danach kommt; denn sie wird sehr drückend sein.
32 Dass aber der Pharao den Traum zweimal hatte, das bedeutet, dass die Sache[e] bei Gott fest beschlossen ist und dass Gott es rasch ausführen wird.
33 Und nun möge der Pharao nach einem verständigen und weisen Mann sehen und ihn über das Land Ägypten setzen.
34 Der Pharao möge handeln und Aufseher über das Land setzen; und er lasse in den sieben Jahren des Überflusses den fünften Teil [des Ertrages] erheben vom Land Ägypten.
35 So soll man alle Nahrung dieser sieben künftigen guten Jahre sammeln und Getreide speichern zur Verfügung des Pharao, und diese Nahrung in den Städten aufbewahren.
36 Und diese Nahrung soll dem Land als Vorrat dienen für die sieben Hungerjahre, die im Land Ägypten eintreten werden, damit das Land durch die Hungersnot nicht zugrunde geht!
Josephs Erhöhung zum Regenten über Ägypten
37 Diese Rede gefiel dem Pharao und allen seinen Knechten gut.
38 Und der Pharao sprach zu seinen Knechten: Können wir einen Mann finden wie diesen, in dem der Geist Gottes ist?
39 Und der Pharao sprach zu Joseph: Nachdem Gott dir dies alles mitgeteilt hat, ist keiner so verständig und weise wie du.
40 Du sollst über mein Haus sein, und deinem Befehl soll mein ganzes Volk gehorchen; nur um den Thron will ich höher sein als du!
41 Und der Pharao sprach zu Joseph: Siehe, ich setze dich über das ganze Land Ägypten!
42 Und der Pharao nahm den Siegelring von seiner Hand und steckte ihn an die Hand Josephs, und er bekleidete ihn mit weißer Leinwand und legte eine goldene Kette um seinen Hals;
43 und er ließ ihn auf seinem zweiten Wagen fahren; und man rief vor ihm aus: »Beugt eure Knie!« Und so wurde er über das ganze Land Ägypten gesetzt.
44 Und der Pharao sprach zu Joseph: Ich bin der Pharao, aber ohne dich soll niemand im ganzen Land Ägypten die Hand oder den Fuß erheben!
45 Und der Pharao gab Joseph den Namen Zaphenat-Paneach[f] und gab ihm Asnath zur Frau, die Tochter Potipheras, des Priesters von On. Und Joseph zog aus durch das ganze Land Ägypten.
46 Und Joseph war 30 Jahre alt, als er vor dem Pharao, dem König von Ägypten, stand. Und Joseph ging vom Pharao hinweg und bereiste das ganze Land Ägypten.
47 Und das Land trug in den sieben Jahren reichen Überfluss.
48 Und er sammelte allen Ertrag der sieben Jahre, die im Land Ägypten waren, und schaffte die Nahrungsmittel in die Städte; den Ertrag der umliegenden Felder brachte er in die Städte.
49 Und Joseph speicherte Getreide auf wie Sand am Meer, über die Maßen viel, bis man es nicht mehr messen konnte; denn es war unermesslich viel.
50 Bevor aber das Jahr der Hungersnot kam, wurden dem Joseph zwei Söhne geboren; die gebar ihm Asnath, die Tochter Potipheras, des Priesters von On.
51 Und Joseph gab dem Erstgeborenen den Namen Manasse[g]; denn [er sprach]: Gott hat mich alle meine Mühsal vergessen lassen und das ganze Haus meines Vaters.
52 Dem zweiten aber gab er den Namen Ephraim[h]; denn [er sprach]: Gott hat mich fruchtbar gemacht im Land meines Elends.
53 Als nun die sieben Jahre des Überflusses im Land Ägypten zu Ende gegangen waren,
54 da brachen die sieben Hungerjahre an, wie Joseph vorausgesagt hatte. Und es entstand eine Hungersnot in allen Ländern; aber im ganzen Land Ägypten gab es Brot.
55 Und als das ganze Land Ägypten Hunger litt und das Volk zum Pharao um Brot schrie, da sprach der Pharao zu allen Ägyptern: Geht hin zu Joseph; was er euch sagt, das tut!
56 Und als die Hungersnot im ganzen Land herrschte, öffnete Joseph alle Speicher und verkaufte den Ägyptern [Getreide]; denn die Hungersnot nahm überhand im Land Ägypten.
57 Und alle Welt kam nach Ägypten, um bei Joseph Korn zu kaufen; denn es herrschte große Hungersnot auf der ganzen Erde.

A fáraó álma
41 Két teljes év múlt el ezután, és a fáraó is álmot látott.
Álmában a Nílus partján állt, 2 és látta, hogy a folyóból hét szép, kövér tehén jön ki, és legelésznek a parton. 3 Utánuk másik hét tehén jött fel a vízből, de ezek csúnyák és nagyon soványak voltak. Oda álltak az előző kövér tehenek mellé. 4 Azután a hét csúnya és sovány tehén kezdte fölfalni a másik hét szép és kövér tehenet, s végül egészen megették őket.
Eddig tartott az álom, s a fáraó fölébredt.
5 Majd ismét elaludt, és megint álmot látott: hét szép, kövér búzakalász növekedett egy száron. 6 Utánuk másik hét kalász növekedett, de ezek a sivatagi forró széltől aszottak, hitványak és soványak voltak. 7 Majd a hét sovány kalász elnyelte a szép kalászokat.
Eddig tartott a második álom, s a fáraó fölébredt.
8 Nagyon nyugtalanították ezek az álmok, ezért reggel összehívatta Egyiptom bölcseit és varázslóit. Elmondta nekik, mit álmodott, de a bölcsek nem értették, mit jelent.
9 Ekkor a főpohárnok ezt mondta a fáraónak: „Felség, be kell vallanom, hogy hibát vétettem. 10 Felséged egyszer megharagudott szolgáira, a királyi pékmesterek főnökére meg rám, és mindkettőnket a testőrparancsnok börtönébe vetett. 11 Ott mindketten álmot láttunk: ugyanazon az éjjelen láttuk, de mást-mást álmodtunk, és az álmok jelentése is különböző volt. 12 Ott raboskodott velünk egy fiatalember, a testőrparancsnok héber rabszolgája, akinek elmondtuk, mit álmodtunk. Ő pedig mind a kettőnknek meg tudta mondani, mit jelent az álmunk. 13 És valóban, pontosan úgy történt, ahogy ő mondta: engem felséged visszahelyezett állásomba, a pékmestert pedig kivégeztette.”
József megmagyarázza a fáraó álmát
14 Ennek hallatára a fáraó megparancsolta, hogy Józsefet hozzák elébe a börtönből. Sietve el is mentek érte, József pedig megborotválkozott és átöltözött. Ezután a fáraó elé vitték.
15 A fáraó megszólította: „Álmot láttam, és senki sem tudja megmagyarázni, mit jelent. De rólad azt hallottam, hogy meg tudod fejteni az álmok jelentését!”
16 József így felelt: „Felség, nem én, hanem Isten az, aki a megfejtést tudtára adja a fáraónak, ez pedig felséged javát szolgálja.”
17 Akkor a fáraó elmondta Józsefnek, mit álmodott: „A Nílus partján álltam, 18 és láttam, hogy a folyóból hét szép, kövér tehén jön ki, és legelésznek a parton. 19 Utánuk másik hét tehén jött fel a vízből, de ezek csúnyábbak és soványabbak voltak, mint amilyeneket valaha is láttam Egyiptomban. 20 Azután a hét csúnya és sovány tehén fölfalta az előző hét kövér tehenet. 21 Különös módon a sovány teheneken meg sem látszott, hogy fölfalták a kövéreket: ugyanolyan soványak maradtak, mint azelőtt. 25 József azt mondta a fáraónak: „Felség, ez a két álom ugyanazt jelenti. Isten így mutatta meg a fáraónak, amit tenni készül. 26 A hét szép tehén hét esztendőt jelent. Ezt jelenti a hét kövér kalász is. A jelentésük ugyanaz. 27 A hét sovány tehén és a hét hőségtől aszott meddő kalász is hét évet jelent: az éhínség hét esztendejét. 28 Ez az, amit mondtam, hogy Isten előre megmutatta felségednek, amit cselekedni fog. 29 Mert bizony eljön a bő termés hét esztendeje egész Egyiptomra, 30 azután pedig hét szűk esztendő következik, amely miatt a nép elfelejti az előző bőség idejét. Szűkölködés és éhínség fogja emészteni egész Egyiptomot. 31 A korábbi bőségnek nyoma sem marad az éhezés ideje alatt, mert a csapás olyan súlyos lesz.
32 Felséged tehát kétszer álmodta ugyanazt — ez pedig azt jelenti, hogy ezt Isten már véglegesen elhatározta, és hamarosan véghez is viszi. 33 Most tehát jelöljön ki felséged egy értelmes és bölcs férfit, és adjon neki felhatalmazást egész Egyiptomban! 34 Egyúttal rendeljen felséged felügyelőket, akik a bőség hét esztendeje alatt begyűjtik az egész országból a termés ötödrészét! 35 Gyűjtsenek össze minden tárolható élelmet és gabonát a bőséges években a fáraó raktáraiba, és őrizzék azt a városokban! 36 Legyen ez a raktározott élelem az ország tartaléka az éhség hét esztendejében, amely eljön Egyiptomra! Így a szűk esztendők miatt nem pusztul el az ország.”
A fáraó maga mellé emeli Józsefet
37 A fáraónak és tanácsadóinak nagyon tetszett József terve. 38 Ezért a fáraó így szólt hozzájuk: „Ki lehetne alkalmasabb erre a feladatra, mint ez a fiatalember, akiben Isten szelleme lakik?”
39 Azután Józsefhez fordult: „Mivel Isten neked mutatta meg mindezeket, nincs nálad bölcsebb és értelmesebb férfi! 40 Téged bízlak hát meg, hogy viselj gondot egész birodalmamra! Népemet szavad kormányozza, és engedelmeskedjenek neked! Csak a királyi trón tesz engem hatalmasabbá nálad. 41 Most azért egész Egyiptom kormányzójává teszlek téged!” 42 Ekkor a fáraó levette a pecsétgyűrűjét, és József ujjára húzta. Majd megparancsolta, hogy Józsefet öltöztessék rangjának megfelelő finom lenvászon ruhába, és arany láncot tett a nyakába.
43 Azután elrendelte, hogy a fáraó második harci szekerén hordozzák körbe Egyiptomban, és kiáltsák: „Térdeljetek le József előtt!” Így tette a fáraó őt egész Egyiptom kormányzójává. 44 Ezt mondta a fáraó Józsefnek: „Jóllehet én vagyok Egyiptom királya, de tudtod és beleegyezésed nélkül még a kisujját se mozdítsa senki országomban!” 45-46 A fáraó egyiptomi nevet adott Józsefnek: attól kezdve Cáfenat-Panéah[a]-nak hívták.
Azután a fáraó Józsefhez adta feleségül Ászenatot, Potiferának, Ón papjának leányát. Így lett József 30 éves korában egész Egyiptom kormányzója. Ezután kiment a fáraó palotájából, és keresztül-kasul bejárta egész Egyiptom földjét.
A bőség hét éve
47 Elkezdődtek a bőség évei, s ezalatt tele marokkal ontotta termését a föld egész Egyiptomban. 48 József munkához látott: megszervezte, hogy minden városba gyűjtsék be a környező földekről a termés nélkülözhető részét, s ezt raktárakban helyezte el. 49 A bőség hét éve alatt olyan rengeteg sok gabonát halmozott föl, mint a tenger partján a homok. A végén már nem is vették számba, csak gyűjtötték raktárakba a sok termést.
50 Még mielőtt a szűk esztendők elkezdődtek volna, két fia született Józsefnek feleségétől, Ászenattól, aki Potiferának, Ón papjának leánya volt. 51 Elsőszülöttjét Manassénak nevezte József, mert azt mondta: „Bizony, elfeledtette[b] velem Isten minden keserűségemet, és apám családját!” 52 Második fiának az Efraim nevet adta, mert ezt mondta: „Megszaporított[c] engem Isten szenvedésem földjén.”
A hét szűk esztendő
53 Azután elmúltak a bőséges termést hozó évek, 54 és elkezdődött a hét szűk esztendő. Pontosan úgy történt, ahogy József előre megmondta. Sem Egyiptomban, sem a környező országokban nem termett a föld, és mindenhol éheztek az emberek. Egyiptomban azonban bőven volt gabona, mivel József még idejében elraktározta. 55 Amikor az egyiptomi nép is éhezni kezdett, kenyérért könyörögtek a fáraóhoz, aki ezt mondta: „Forduljatok Józsefhez, és tegyétek azt, amit mond!”
56 Mindenhol a földön éhínség uralkodott, de akkor József megnyitotta raktárait, és árulta a gabonát az egyiptomiaknak. Az éhínség pedig egyre súlyosabban nehezedett az emberekre. 57 A környező országokban is elhatalmasodott az éhínség, emiatt mindenki Egyiptomba ment gabonát vásárolni.

Puis le pharaon fit un rêve : il se tenait au bord du Nil 2 et vit sortir du fleuve sept vaches belles et bien grasses, qui se mirent à paître dans les roseaux. 3 Puis, après elles, sept autres vaches sortirent du fleuve, elles étaient laides et décharnées. Elles vinrent se placer à côté des premières vaches, au bord du fleuve. 4 Et voilà que les sept vaches laides et décharnées dévorèrent les sept vaches belles et grasses. Alors le pharaon se réveilla. 5 Puis il se rendormit et fit un second rêve : Sept épis poussaient sur une seule tige, des épis pleins et beaux. 6 Puis sept épis maigres et desséchés par le vent d’orient[a] poussèrent après eux. 7 Les épis maigres engloutirent les sept épis pleins et beaux. Alors le pharaon se réveilla et se rendit compte qu’il avait rêvé.
8 Au matin, inquiet, il fit convoquer tous les magiciens et les sages d’Egypte et leur raconta ses rêves, mais aucun d’eux ne put les lui interpréter. 9 Alors le chef des échansons prit la parole et dit au pharaon : Je vais évoquer aujourd’hui le souvenir de ma faute. 10 Le pharaon s’était emporté contre ses serviteurs et m’avait fait mettre aux arrêts avec le chef des panetiers dans la maison du commandant des gardes. 11 Une nuit, nous avons fait tous deux un rêve ayant sa signification propre. 12 Or, il y avait là avec nous un jeune homme hébreu, un esclave du commandant des gardes ; nous lui avons raconté nos deux rêves et il a donné l’interprétation de chacun d’eux. 13 Par la suite, les choses se sont passées conformément à l’interprétation qu’il nous avait donnée : moi j’ai été rétabli dans mes fonctions, et le panetier a été pendu.
14 Alors le pharaon envoya chercher Joseph et, sur-le-champ, on courut le faire sortir du cachot ; on le rasa[b], on le fit changer d’habits et on l’introduisit auprès du pharaon. 15 Celui-ci dit à Joseph : J’ai fait un rêve et personne n’est capable de l’interpréter. Or, j’ai entendu dire qu’il te suffit d’entendre raconter un rêve pour pouvoir l’interpréter.
16 Joseph répondit au pharaon : Ce n’est pas moi, c’est Dieu qui donnera au pharaon l’explication qui convient.
17 Le pharaon dit alors à Joseph : Dans mon rêve, je me tenais debout sur le bord du Nil. 18 Sept vaches grasses et belles sortirent du fleuve et se mirent à paître dans les roseaux. 19 Puis sept autres vaches surgirent derrière elles, maigres, laides et décharnées ; elles étaient si misérables que je n’en ai jamais vu de pareilles dans tout le pays d’Egypte. 20 Ces vaches décharnées et laides dévorèrent les sept vaches grasses, 21 qui furent englouties dans leur ventre sans que l’on remarque qu’elles avaient été avalées : les vaches maigres restaient aussi misérables qu’auparavant. Là-dessus je me suis réveillé. 22 Puis j’ai fait un autre rêve : Je voyais sept épis pleins et beaux pousser sur une même tige. 23 Puis sept épis secs, maigres et desséchés par le vent d’orient poussèrent après eux. 24 Les épis maigres engloutirent les sept beaux épis. J’ai raconté tout cela aux magiciens, mais aucun d’eux n’a pu me l’expliquer.
25 Joseph dit au pharaon : Ce que le pharaon a rêvé constitue un seul et même rêve. Dieu a révélé au pharaon ce qu’il va faire. 26 Les sept belles vaches représentent sept années, tout comme les sept beaux épis ; c’est un seul et même songe. 27 Les sept vaches décharnées et laides qui ont surgi derrière les premières représentent aussi sept années, et les sept épis maigres, desséchés par le vent d’orient, seront sept années de famine. 28 Comme je l’ai dit au pharaon : Dieu a révélé au pharaon ce qu’il va faire. 29 Il y aura d’abord sept années de grande abondance dans toute l’Egypte. 30 Elles seront suivies de sept années de famine qui feront oublier toute cette abondance en Egypte, tant la famine épuisera le pays. 31 Le souvenir même de l’abondance dont le pays aura joui s’effacera à cause de cette famine, car elle sévira très durement. 32 Si le rêve du pharaon s’est répété par deux fois, c’est que Dieu a irrévocablement décidé la chose et qu’il va l’exécuter sans délai.
33 Maintenant donc, que le pharaon choisisse sans tarder un homme avisé et sage et qu’il le mette à la tête du pays. 34 Que le pharaon agisse ainsi : Qu’il nomme dans tout le pays des commissaires qui prélèveront le cinquième de toutes les récoltes d’Egypte durant les sept années d’abondance. 35 Ils collecteront tous les vivres que produiront ces bonnes années qui viennent, ils emmagasineront le blé dans les villes sous l’autorité du pharaon, et le garderont comme réserve de vivres. 36 Ces provisions serviront de réserve pour le pays, en prévision des sept années de famine qui s’abattront sur l’Egypte. Ainsi les habitants du pays ne mourront pas de faim.
Joseph à la tête de l’Egypte
37 Cette proposition plut au pharaon et à tous ses hauts fonctionnaires. 38 Alors le pharaon leur dit : Trouverions-nous un homme aussi compétent que celui-ci en qui habite l’Esprit de Dieu[c] ?
39 Le pharaon dit à Joseph : Puisque Dieu t’a fait connaître toutes ces choses, il n’y a personne qui soit aussi avisé et aussi sage que toi. 40 Tu seras donc à la tête de mon royaume, et tout mon peuple se pliera à tes ordres. Moi-même je ne serai au-dessus de toi que par le trône[d]. 41 Ainsi, lui dit-il, je te mets à la tête de toute l’Egypte.
42 Et le pharaon retira son anneau[e] de sa main et le passa au doigt de Joseph ; il le fit revêtir d’habits de fin lin et lui suspendit un collier d’or au cou[f]. 43 Il le fit monter sur son deuxième char et, sur son parcours, on cria : A genoux[g] !
C’est ainsi qu’il le mit à la tête de toute l’Egypte. 44 Le pharaon dit encore à Joseph : Je suis le pharaon. Mais sans ton ordre, personne dans tout le pays ne lèvera le petit doigt ni ne se déplacera.
45 Le pharaon nomma Joseph Tsaphnat-Paenéah[h] et lui donna pour femme Asnath, fille de Poti-Phéra, un prêtre d’On[i]. Joseph partit inspecter l’Egypte. 46 Il était âgé de trente ans quand il entra au service du pharaon, roi d’Egypte. Il quitta la cour du pharaon et parcourut tout le pays d’Egypte.
47 Pendant les sept années d’abondance, la terre produisit de riches moissons. 48 Joseph rassembla tous les vivres possibles en Egypte pendant ces sept années, et il les entreposa dans les villes. Dans chaque ville, il mit en réserve les denrées alimentaires produites par le territoire environnant. 49 Il entreposa du blé en aussi grande quantité que le sable de la mer ; il y en avait tant que l’on cessa d’en faire le compte, car cela dépassait toute mesure.
Les fils de Joseph
50 Avant la période de famine, Asnath, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On, donna deux fils à Joseph. 51 Il appela son premier-né Manassé (Celui qui fait oublier[j]), car, dit-il, Dieu m’a fait oublier toutes mes souffrances et ma séparation de la famille de mon père. 52 Il donna au second le nom d’Ephraïm (Fécond), car Dieu, dit-il, m’a rendu fécond dans le pays où j’ai connu l’affliction.
La famine
53 Les sept années où l’abondance avait régné en Egypte touchèrent à leur terme 54 et les sept années de famine commencèrent, comme Joseph l’avait prédit. La famine sévissait dans tous les pays. Mais il y avait du pain dans toute l’Egypte[k]. 55 Quand la population de l’Egypte n’eut plus de pain, elle en réclama à grands cris au pharaon, qui dit à tous les Egyptiens : Adressez-vous à Joseph et faites ce qu’il vous dira !
56 La famine sévissait dans toute la contrée. Joseph ouvrit tous les entrepôts du pays et vendit du blé aux Egyptiens. Mais la disette s’aggrava encore en Egypte. 57 De tous les pays, on venait acheter du blé auprès de Joseph, car la famine était grande sur toute la terre.
