Pharaoh’s Dreams
41 Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that (A)Pharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river. 2 Suddenly there came up out of the river seven cows, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. 3 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river. 4 And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good. 6 Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by the (B)east wind, sprang up after them. 7 And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, it was a dream. 8 Now it came to pass in the morning (C)that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all (D)the magicians of Egypt and all its (E)wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.
9 Then the (F)chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: “I remember my faults this day. 10 When Pharaoh was (G)angry with his servants, (H)and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker, 11 (I)we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. 12 Now there was a young (J)Hebrew man with us there, a (K)servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he (L)interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream. 13 And it came to pass, just (M)as he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”
14 (N)Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they (O)brought him quickly (P)out of the dungeon; and he shaved, (Q)changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. (R)But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.”
16 So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, (S)“It is not in me; (T)God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “Behold, (U)in my dream I stood on the bank of the river. 18 Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. 19 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt. 20 And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows. 21 When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22 Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven [a]heads came up on one stalk, full and good. 23 Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. 24 And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So (V)I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”
25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one; (W)God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do: 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good [b]heads are seven years; the dreams are one. 27 And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are (X)seven years of famine. 28 (Y)This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. 29 Indeed (Z)seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; 30 but after them seven years of famine will (AA)arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine (AB)will deplete the land. 31 So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. 32 And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the (AC)thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
33 “Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint [c]officers over the land, (AD)to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. 35 And (AE)let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the [d]authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 Then that food shall be as a [e]reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land (AF)may not [f]perish during the famine.”
Joseph’s Rise to Power
37 So (AG)the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man (AH)in whom is the Spirit of God?”
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. 40 (AI)You shall be [g]over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have (AJ)set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42 Then Pharaoh (AK)took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he (AL)clothed him in garments of fine linen (AM)and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 And he had him ride in the second (AN)chariot which he had; (AO)and they cried out before him, “Bow the knee!” So he set him (AP)over all the land of Egypt. 44 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” 45 And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name [h]Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife (AQ)Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he (AR)stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth [i]abundantly. 48 So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he laid up in every city the food of the fields which surrounded them. 49 Joseph gathered very much grain, (AS)as the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting, for it was immeasurable.
50 (AT)And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn [j]Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my (AU)father’s house.” 52 And the name of the second he called [k]Ephraim: “For God has caused me to be (AV)fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, 54 (AW)and the seven years of famine began to come, (AX)as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; (AY)whatever he says to you, do.” 56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened [l]all the storehouses and (AZ)sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. 57 (BA)So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to (BB)buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.

Pharaoh’s Dreams
41 When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream:(A) He was standing by the Nile,(B) 2 when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat,(C) and they grazed among the reeds.(D) 3 After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. 4 And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.(E)
5 He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain,(F) healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk. 6 After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted—thin and scorched by the east wind.(G) 7 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up;(H) it had been a dream.
8 In the morning his mind was troubled,(I) so he sent for all the magicians(J) and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.(K)
9 Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I am reminded of my shortcomings.(L) 10 Pharaoh was once angry with his servants,(M) and he imprisoned me and the chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard.(N) 11 Each of us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.(O) 12 Now a young Hebrew(P) was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard.(Q) We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream.(R) 13 And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled.(S)”
14 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon.(T) When he had shaved(U) and changed his clothes,(V) he came before Pharaoh.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it.(W) But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”(X)
16 “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”(Y)
17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,(Z) 18 when out of the river there came up seven cows, fat and sleek, and they grazed among the reeds.(AA) 19 After them, seven other cows came up—scrawny and very ugly and lean. I had never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt. 20 The lean, ugly cows ate up the seven fat cows that came up first. 21 But even after they ate them, no one could tell that they had done so; they looked just as ugly as before. Then I woke up.
22 “In my dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, growing on a single stalk. 23 After them, seven other heads sprouted—withered and thin and scorched by the east wind. 24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me.(AB)”
25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same.(AC) God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.(AD) 26 The seven good cows(AE) are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream. 27 The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.(AF)
28 “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.(AG) 29 Seven years of great abundance(AH) are coming throughout the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine(AI) will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.(AJ) 31 The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. 32 The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided(AK) by God, and God will do it soon.(AL)
33 “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man(AM) and put him in charge of the land of Egypt.(AN) 34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners(AO) over the land to take a fifth(AP) of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.(AQ) 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food.(AR) 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt,(AS) so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”
37 The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials.(AT) 38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God[a]?”(AU)
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you,(AV) there is no one so discerning and wise as you.(AW) 40 You shall be in charge of my palace,(AX) and all my people are to submit to your orders.(AY) Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.(AZ)”
Joseph in Charge of Egypt
41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”(BA) 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring(BB) from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes(BC) of fine linen(BD) and put a gold chain around his neck.(BE) 43 He had him ride in a chariot(BF) as his second-in-command,[b](BG) and people shouted before him, “Make way[c]!”(BH) Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt.(BI)
44 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your word no one will lift hand or foot in all Egypt.”(BJ) 45 Pharaoh gave Joseph(BK) the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest(BL) of On,[d](BM) to be his wife.(BN) And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was thirty years old(BO) when he entered the service(BP) of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt. 47 During the seven years of abundance(BQ) the land produced plentifully. 48 Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities.(BR) In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it. 49 Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea;(BS) it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.
50 Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.(BT) 51 Joseph named his firstborn(BU) Manasseh[e](BV) and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” 52 The second son he named Ephraim[f](BW) and said, “It is because God has made me fruitful(BX) in the land of my suffering.”
53 The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end, 54 and the seven years of famine(BY) began,(BZ) just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in the whole land of Egypt there was food. 55 When all Egypt began to feel the famine,(CA) the people cried to Pharaoh for food. Then Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do what he tells you.”(CB)
56 When the famine had spread over the whole country, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians,(CC) for the famine(CD) was severe throughout Egypt.(CE) 57 And all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph,(CF) because the famine was severe everywhere.(CG)

41 그로부터 만 이 년이 지났을 때, 파라오가 꿈을 꾸었다. 꿈속에서 그는 나일 강가에 서 있었다. 2 그때에 매끄럽고 살진 암소 일곱 마리가 나일 강에서 올라와 갈대 사이에서 풀을 뜯어 먹었다. 3 그 뒤를 이어서 나일 강에서 일곱 마리의 암소가 다시 올라왔다. 그런데 이번에는 못생기고 빼빼 마른 소들이었다. 그들은 나일 강둑에 있던 먼저 올라온 소들 옆에 나란히 섰다. 4 그러더니 못생기고 빼빼 마른 암소들이 매끈하고 살진 일곱 마리 암소를 모조리 잡아먹었다. 거기서 파라오가 잠에서 깨어났다.
5 파라오는 다시 잠이 들어 두 번째 꿈을 꾸었다. 꿈속에서 건강하고 좋은 곡식 이삭 일곱 개가 한 줄기에서 나와 자라고 있었다. 6 그 뒤를 이어서 일곱 개의 이삭이 피어 나오는데 모두 야위고 동쪽에서 불어오는 뜨거운 바람에 타 버린 것들이었다. 7 이 야윈 곡식 이삭들이 건강하고 잘 여문 이삭들을 삼켜 버렸다. 거기서 파라오가 또 잠에서 깨어났다. 그것은 그저 꿈이었다.
8 아침이 되자 파라오는 마음이 뒤숭숭하였다. 그는 이집트 안에 있는 마술사와 지혜로운 사람을 모두 불러들였다. 파라오는 그들에게 자기의 꿈 이야기를 해 주었으나 아무도 그를 위해 꿈을 풀어내지 못하였다.
술잔 올리는 신하가 파라오에게 요셉 이야기를 하다
9 그때에 술잔을 올리는 신하 가운데 가장 높은 신하가 파라오에게 아뢰었다. “오늘에야 저의 잘못이 생각났습니다. 10 파라오께서 저와 빵 구워 올리는 신하 가운데 가장 높은 신하에게 노하신 적이 있었습니다. 파라오께서는 저희를 경호대장이 관리하는 감옥에 가두셨습니다. 11 그런데 저와 그 사람이 같은 날 밤에 각기 꿈을 꾼 일이 있었습니다. 그런데 그 꿈들의 뜻이 각각 달랐습니다. 12 그때 그 감옥에는 히브리 젊은이 하나가 저희와 같이 있었습니다. 그 젊은이는 한때 경호대장의 종이었습니다. 저희가 그에게 저희의 꿈을 이야기해 주었더니 그 젊은이가 꿈풀이를 해 주었습니다. 저희 두 사람이 꾼 꿈을 각각 풀이해 주었습니다. 13 그리고 그가 꿈풀이를 해 준 그대로 일이 풀려서 저는 예전의 자리로 돌아왔고 그 사람은 교수형을 당했습니다.”
요셉이 파라오의 꿈을 풀이하다
14 그래서 파라오가 사람을 보내어 요셉을 불러오게 하였다. 사람들은 곧바로 요셉을 지하 감옥에서 끌어냈다. 요셉은 수염을 깎고 옷을 갈아입은 다음 파라오 앞으로 나갔다.
15 파라오가 말하였다. “내가 꿈을 하나 꾸었는데 아무도 그 꿈을 풀이해 주지 못하는구나. 그런데 너는 꿈 이야기를 들으면 그것을 풀이할 수 있다는 말을 들었다.”
16 요셉이 대답하였다. “제가 아니라 하나님께서 파라오께 유익한 꿈풀이를 해 주실 것입니다.”
17 그러자 파라오가 요셉에게 말하였다. “꿈속에서 내가 나일 강둑에 서 있었다. 18 그때에 살지고 매끄러운 암소 일곱 마리가 나일 강에서 올라와 갈대 사이에서 풀을 뜯어 먹었다. 19 그 뒤를 이어서 일곱 마리의 암소가 다시 올라왔다. 그런데 이번에는 야위고 아주 못생긴데다 깡마른 암소들이었다. 나는 이제껏 이집트 땅 어디에서도 그렇게 못생긴 암소를 본 적이 없었다. 20 깡마르고 못생긴 암소들이 먼저 올라온 일곱 마리의 살진 암소들을 잡아먹어 버렸다. 21 그런데 이 야윈 암소들은 살진 암소들을 잡아먹었는데도 처음처럼 흉하게 보였다. 그래서 그 야윈 암소들이 살진 암소들을 잡아먹었다는 것을 알 수 없었다. 나는 거기서 잠이 깨었다.
22 나는 또 꿈속에서 야물고 좋은 곡식 이삭 일곱 개가 한 줄기에서 나와 자라고 있는 것을 보았다. 23 그 뒤를 이어서 일곱 개의 다른 이삭이 피어 나오는데 모두 시들고 야위고 동쪽에서 불어오는 뜨거운 바람에 타 버린 것들이었다. 24 이 야윈 곡식 이삭들이 좋은 이삭들을 삼켜 버렸다. 내가 이 꿈 이야기를 마술사들에게 하였지만 아무도 내게 그것을 풀이해 주지 못하였다.”
25 요셉이 파라오에게 말하였다. “파라오께서 꾸신 꿈들의 내용은 꼭 같습니다. 하나님께서는 자기가 하시려는 일을 파라오께 드러내 보여 주셨습니다. 26 좋은 암소 일곱 마리는 일곱 해를 뜻합니다. 그리고 좋은 곡식 이삭 일곱 개도 일곱 해를 뜻합니다. 두 꿈이 다 같은 내용입니다. 27 그리고 뒤에 올라온 깡마르고 못생긴 암소나 동쪽에서 불어오는 뜨거운 바람에 타 버린 보잘것없는 곡식 이삭 일곱 개도 일곱 해를 뜻합니다. 그것들은 일곱 해 동안 가뭄이 있을 것을 말합니다.
28 제가 파라오께 ‘하나님께서는 자기가 하시려고 하는 일을 보여 주셨습니다.’라고 말씀드렸습니다. 그것은 바로 이런 일을 두고 드린 말씀입니다. 29 앞으로 일곱 해 동안 이집트 온 땅에 엄청난 풍년이 들 것입니다. 30 그러나 일곱 해 동안의 가뭄이 그 뒤를 따를 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 이집트 땅에 풍년이 들었던 일은 다 잊혀질 것입니다. 그리고 가뭄 때문에 온 땅은 황폐하게 될 것입니다. 31 풍년 뒤에 따라올 흉년이 너무 심해서 이 땅에 풍년이 들었던 일을 기억하지 못할 것입니다.
32 파라오께서는 똑 같은 내용의 꿈을 두 번 꾸셨습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 반드시 이런 일들을 하시기로 작정하셨기 때문입니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 곧 그렇게 하실 것입니다. 33 그러니 파라오께서는 분별력이 있고 지혜로운 사람을 한 사람 뽑으십시오. 그리고 그 사람에게 이집트 땅을 맡기십시오. 34 파라오께서는 전국에 관리들을 임명하셔서 풍년이 계속 되는 일곱 해 동안에 이집트 땅에서 나는 곡식의 오분의 일을 거두어들이게 하십시오. 35 그 관리들은 앞으로 올 풍년 동안에 모든 식량을 거두어 들여야 합니다. 그들은 파라오의 권한을 빌어 식량을 성마다 쌓아 두고 지켜야 합니다. 36 그리고 이 식량을 온 나라를 위해 보관해 두어야 합니다. 그랬다가 이집트 땅에 닥쳐 올 일곱 해 동안의 기근 때에 써야 합니다. 그렇게 하면 가뭄이 들어도 이집트 백성은 죽지 않을 것입니다.”
37 파라오와 모든 신하가 이 제안을 좋게 여겼다. 38 그래서 파라오가 신하들에게 물었다. “하나님의 영이 이 사람과 함께 하시는데 우리가 이런 사람을 달리 찾을 수 있겠느냐?”
39 그런 다음 파라오가 요셉에게 말하였다. “하나님께서 이 모든 일을 그대에게 알려 주셨다. 그러니 그대만큼 분별력이 있고 지혜로운 사람은 없다. 40 나는 그대에게 나의 온 나라의 정사를 맡기겠다. 그리고 모든 백성은 그대의 명령에 복종할 것이다. 내가 그대보다 높다는 것은 내가 왕좌에 앉아 있다는 것뿐이다.”
41 그리고 파라오가 요셉에게 말하였다. “이제 내가 온 이집트 땅을 그대에게 맡긴다.” 42 그러고 나서 파라오는 손가락에 끼고 있던 인장 반지를 빼어 요셉의 손가락에 끼어 주었다. 그는 요셉에게 고운 모시옷을 입히고 목에는 금 목걸이를 걸어 주었다. 43 그런 다음 요셉에게 부사령관의 전차를 주어 타게 하였다. 왕실 경호원들은 요셉의 전차를 앞서 가며 외쳤다. “무릎을 꿇어라.” 이렇게 하여 파라오는 요셉에게 온 이집트 땅을 맡겼다.
44 파라오가 요셉에게 말하였다. “나는 파라오다. 그러나 온 이집트 땅에서 그대의 허락 없이는 어느 누구도 손 하나 발 하나 들지 못할 것이다.”
45 파라오는 요셉에게 사브낫바네아[a]라는 이름을 지어 주었다. 그리고 보디베라의 딸 아스낫을 요셉에게 주어 아내로 삼게 하였다. 보디베라는 온[b]이라는 도시의 제사장이었다. 이렇게 하여 요셉이 온 이집트 땅을 다스리는 총리가 되었다.
46 요셉이 이집트 왕 파라오를 섬기기 시작하였을 때 그의 나이는 서른 살이었다. 요셉은 파라오 앞에서 물러나와 이집트 온 땅을 구석구석 둘러보았다. 47 풍년을 이룬 일곱 해 동안에 땅에서 나온 곡식이 많았다. 48 요셉은 일곱 해 동안 이집트에 풍년이 들어 생산된 식량을 모두 모았다. 그리고 그것을 여러 도시에 저장해 두었다. 각각의 들에서 생산된 곡식은 그 들에서 가장 가까운 도시에 저장하였다. 49 요셉이 저장한 곡식의 양은 엄청나게 많아서 마치 바다의 모래와 같았다. 그 양이 셀 수 없을 만큼 많아서 그는 일일이 기록하는 일을 그만둘 수밖에 없었다.
50 가뭄이 들기 전에 온의 제사장인 보디베라의 딸 아스낫이 요셉에게 아들 둘을 낳아 주었다. 51 요셉이 맏아들의 이름을 므낫세[c]라 짓고 이렇게 말하였다. “하나님께서 내가 겪은 모든 괴로움과 내 아버지의 집안을 다 잊게 해 주셨기 때문이다.” 52 그는 둘째 아들의 이름을 에브라임[d]이라 짓고 이렇게 말하였다. “하나님께서는 내가 고생하던 이 땅에서 열매를 맺게 해 주셨다.”
흉년이 시작되다
53 이윽고 이집트 땅에서 일곱 해 동안 이어가던 풍년이 끝났다. 54 그리고 요셉이 말한 대로 일곱 해 동안의 가뭄이 시작되었다. 그 지역에 있는 다른 모든 나라에도 가뭄이 들었다. 그러나 이집트 온 땅에는 식량이 있었다. 55 그러나 마침내 이집트 온 땅의 백성마저 먹을 것이 없게 되어 파라오에게 먹을 것을 달라고 부르짖었다. 그러자 파라오가 그들에게 말하였다. “요셉에게 가서 그가 시키는 대로 하여라.”
56 온 땅에 가뭄이 퍼지자 요셉은 창고를 열고 이집트 사람들에게 곡식을 팔았다. 이집트 땅에도 가뭄이 심했기 때문이다. 57 온 세계에 극심한 가뭄이 들었으므로 모든 땅의 백성이 요셉에게서 곡식을 사려고 이집트로 왔다.
