Genesis 4

4 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.
23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

4 Adam låg med sin hustru Eva, och hon blev gravid och födde en son som fick namnet Kain[a], för hon sa: ”Med Herrens hjälp har jag fått en människa!” 2 Hennes nästa barn var Abel, Kains bror. Abel blev herde, medan Kain blev lantbrukare. 3 En gång kom Kain med en del av sin skörd av frukt som offergåva till Herren. 4 Också Abel kom med de feta köttstyckena från sina förstfödda lamm. Herren såg med välbehag på Abel och hans offer, 5 men inte på Kain och hans offer. Detta gjorde Kain vred, och han sänkte blicken.
6 ”Varför är du så vred?” frågade Herren. ”Varför sänker du huvudet? 7 Om du gör rätt är du ju accepterad, men om du inte gör rätt, lurar synden vid dörren. Synden åtrår dig, men du ska råda över den!”
8 Kain föreslog sin bror att de skulle gå ut på fälten tillsammans[b]. Medan de var där, överföll Kain sin bror och dödade honom.
9 Herren sa till Kain: ”Var är din bror Abel?” ”Det vet jag inte”, sa Kain. ”Ska jag hålla reda på min bror?”
10 Men Herren sa: ”Vad har du gjort? Din brors blod ropar till mig från marken. 11 Från och med nu är du förbannad och förvisad från den mark som öppnade sin mun för att ta emot din brors blod ur din hand. 12 Den kommer inte längre att ge dig någon skörd. Du ska vara hemlös och fredlös och irra omkring på jorden.”
13 Kain svarade Herren: ”Mitt straff är större än jag kan bära,[c] 14 för du har förvisat mig från min mark och från dig själv och gjort mig till en rastlös vandrare. Vem som helst som ser mig kan döda mig.” 15 Då svarade Herren: ”De kommer inte att döda dig, för jag ska ge ett sju gånger värre straff åt den som gör det.” Sedan satte Herren ett märke på Kain, för att ingen som mötte honom skulle döda honom. 16 Kain gick sedan bort från Herren och bosatte sig i landet Nod, öster om Eden.
Kains ättlingar
17 Därefter låg Kain med sin hustru, och hon blev gravid och födde Henok. När Kain sedan byggde en stad, kallade han den Henok efter sin son.
18 Henok var Irads far. Irad var Mechujaels far, Mechujael var Metushaels far, Metushael var Lemeks far.
19 Lemek gifte sig med två kvinnor – Ada och Silla. 20 Ada födde ett barn som hette Javal, och han blev stamfar för alla som bor i tält och lever av boskapsskötsel. 21 Hans bror hette Juval, och han var den förste att spela lyra och flöjt. 22 Silla födde Tuval Kain. Han var den förste att gjuta redskap av koppar och järn. Tuval Kain hade en syster som hette Naama.
23 En dag sa Lemek till sina båda hustrur:
”Ada och Silla, hör på!
Lemeks hustrur, hör mina ord!
Jag har dödat en man för att han sårat mig,
en ung man för att han skadat mig. [d]
24 Kain ska hämnas sju gånger,
men Lemek sjuttiosju gånger!”
Adams släkttavla genom Set
25 Adam låg igen med sin hustru, och hon födde ytterligare en son. Han fick namnet Set[e], för Eva sa: ”Gud har gett mig en annan son i stället för honom som Kain dödade.” 26 Set fick en son som han kallade Enosh. Det var under dennes livstid som människorna började åkalla Herrens namn.

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore [a]Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother [b]Abel. Now (B)Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And [c]in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit (C)of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of (D)the firstborn of his flock and of (E)their fat. And the Lord (F)respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is [d]for you, but you should rule over it.”
8 Now Cain [e]talked with Abel his [f]brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and (G)killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, (H)“I do not know. Am I (I)my brother’s keeper?”
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood (J)cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now (K)you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
13 And Cain said to the Lord, “My [g]punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; (L)I shall be (M)hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that (N)anyone who finds me will kill me.”
15 And the Lord said to him, [h]“Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him (O)sevenfold.” And the Lord set a (P)mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
The Family of Cain
16 Then Cain (Q)went out from the (R)presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of [i]Nod on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, (S)and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
19 Then Lamech took for himself (T)two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. 20 And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and [j]flute. 22 And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
23 Then Lamech said to his wives:
“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!
For I have [k]killed a man for wounding me,
Even a young man [l]for hurting me.
24 (U)If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
A New Son
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and (V)named him [m]Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, (W)to him also a son was born; and he named him [n]Enosh. Then men began (X)to call on the name of the Lord.

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of (A)the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of (B)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord (C)had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but (D)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 (E)If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. (F)Its desire is for[c] you, and you must rule over it.”

you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say:
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for striking me.
24 (Q)If Cain's revenge is sevenfold,
then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.”
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed[g] for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To (R)Seth also a son was born, and he called his name (S)Enosh. At that time people began (T)to call upon the name of the Lord.
