Cain and Abel

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of (A)the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of (B)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord (C)had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but (D)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 (E)If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. (F)Its desire is for[c] you, and you must rule over it.”

8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and (G)killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, (H)“I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood (I)is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now (J)you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the Lord, “My (K)punishment is greater than I can bear.[e] 14 Behold, (L)you have driven me today away from the ground, and (M)from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, (N)and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him (O)sevenfold.” And the Lord (P)put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.

17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives:

“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
    you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say:
I have killed a man for wounding me,
    a young man for striking me.
24 (Q)If Cain's revenge is sevenfold,
    then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.”

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed[g] for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To (R)Seth also a son was born, and he called his name (S)Enosh. At that time people began (T)to call upon the name of the Lord.

4 Adam lå hos sin kone, Eva, og hun blev gravid og fødte en søn, som fik navnet Kain, for—som hun sagde: „Med Guds hjælp har jeg fået[a] en søn.” 2 Hendes næste søn fik navnet Abel.[b]

Abel vogtede får, og Kain dyrkede jorden. 3 Engang bragte Kain en offergave til Gud af sin høst. 4 Abel bragte også en offergave, det bedste kød fra sine førstefødte lam. Gud accepterede Abels offergave, 5 men ikke Kains. Det blev Kain meget vred og bitter over.

6 „Hvorfor er du vred?” spurgte Gud. „Hvorfor går du og kigger ned i jorden? 7 Når du gør det gode, kan du frit se andre i øjnene. Hvis du derimod gør, hvad der er ondt, så lurer synden ved din dør. Den ønsker at overmande dig, men du skal være herre over den.”

8 En dag sagde Kain til sin bror, Abel: „Lad os gå en tur ud på marken.” Mens de var derude, overfaldt Kain sin bror og slog ham ihjel. 9 Så spurgte Gud Kain: „Hvor er din bror, Abel?” „Hvor skulle jeg vide det fra?” svarede Kain. „Jeg skal vel ikke gå og holde øje med ham!” 10 Men Gud sagde: „Hvad har du dog gjort? Din brors blod råber til mig fra jorden. 11 Derfor skal du forvises fra agerjorden, som har drukket din brors blod. 12 Den skal ikke længere give dig føden. Fra nu af skal du vandre hvileløst fra sted til sted.”

13 Kain blev fortvivlet. „Den straf er ikke til at bære!” udbrød han. 14 „Du jager mig væk fra mine marker og gør mig hjemløs. Du støder mig bort fra din beskyttelse, så enhver, der ser mig, kan slå mig ihjel.” 15 Men Gud svarede: „Hvis du bliver slået ihjel, skal du blive hævnet syv gange.” Så satte Gud et mærke på Kain som en advarsel, så ingen ville turde slå ham ihjel. 16 Derpå rejste Kain væk fra Gud og bosatte sig i landet Nod,[c] som lå øst for Eden.

Kains slægt

17 Kain lå hos sin kone, og hun blev gravid og fødte en søn, som fik navnet Enok. Kain grundlagde også en by og kaldte den Enok efter sin søn. 18 Enok blev far til Irad, Irad blev far til Mehujael, Mehujael blev far til Metushael, og Metushael blev far til Lemek. 19 Lemek tog sig to koner, Ada og Silla. 20 Ada fik en søn, som fik navnet Jabal. Han blev stamfar til dem, der bor i telte og holder kvæg. 21 Hans bror hed Jubal og blev stamfar til dem, der spiller på lyre og fløjte. 22 Silla fik en søn, som blev kaldt Tubal-Kain. Han blev stamfar til dem, der smeder kobber[d] og jern. Tubal-Kain havde en søster ved navn Na’ama.

23 Lemek sagde engang til sine koner:

„Ada og Silla, hør på mig,
    lyt til, hvad jeg siger!
Jeg har dræbt en ung mand som hævn for et sår,
    en dreng som hævn for en skramme.
24 Hvis Kain skulle hævnes 7 gange,
    så skal jeg hævnes 77 gange!”

Adam og Eva får sønnen Set

25 Adam og Eva fik en søn mere, som de kaldte Set,[e] for—som Eva sagde: „Gud har givet mig en anden søn i stedet for Abel, som Kain slog ihjel.” 26 Set fik senere en søn, som han kaldte Enosh. På den tid begyndte man at påkalde og tilbede Gud som Herren over alle ting.

Cain and Abel

4 Adam[a] made love to his wife(A) Eve,(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(D)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(E) 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(F) to the Lord.(G) 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(H) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(I) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(J) 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(K) Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(L) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(M)”

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(N)

9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(O)

“I don’t know,(P)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(Q) 11 Now you are under a curse(R) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.(S) You will be a restless wanderer(T) on the earth.(U)”

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;(V) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,(W) and whoever finds me will kill me.”(X)

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain(Y) will suffer vengeance(Z) seven times over.(AA)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence(AB) and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.(AC)

17 Cain made love to his wife,(AD) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(AE) and he named it after his son(AF) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

19 Lamech married(AG) two women,(AH) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(AI) and pipes.(AJ) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(AK) all kinds of tools out of[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
    wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(AL) a man for wounding me,
    a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(AM) seven times,(AN)
    then Lamech seventy-seven times.(AO)”

25 Adam made love to his wife(AP) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[h](AQ) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(AR) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(AS)

At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.(AT)
