Cain and Abel

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten^[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” ²And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. ³In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of ^(A)the fruit of the ground, ⁴and Abel also brought of ^(B)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord ^(C)had regard for Abel and his offering, ⁵but ^(D)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. ⁶The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? ⁷^(E)If you do well, will you not be accepted?^[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. ^(F)Its desire is contrary to^[c] you, but you must rule over it.”

⁸Cain spoke to Abel his brother.^[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and ^(G)killed him. ⁹Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, ^(H)“I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” ¹⁰And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood ^(I)is crying to me from the ground. ¹¹And now ^(J)you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. ¹²When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” ¹³Cain said to the Lord, “My ^(K)punishment is greater than I can bear.^[e] ¹⁴Behold, ^(L)you have driven me today away from the ground, and ^(M)from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, ^(N)and whoever finds me will kill me.” ¹⁵Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him ^(O)sevenfold.” And the Lord ^(P)put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. ¹⁶Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,^[f] east of Eden.

Cain and Abel

4 Adam loved his wife Eve and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the Lord’s help I have had a baby boy.” ²Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Abel took care of sheep. Cain farmed the land. ³After some time, Cain gathered some things he had grown. He brought them as an offering to the Lord. ⁴And Abel also brought an offering. He brought the fattest parts of some animals from his flock. They were the first animals born to their mothers. The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering. ⁵But he wasn’t pleased with Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his face was sad.

⁶Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why are you looking so sad? ⁷Do what is right and then you will be accepted. If you don’t do what is right, sin is waiting at your door to grab you. It desires to control you. But you must rule over it.”

⁸Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” So they went out. There Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

⁹Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” Cain replied. “Am I supposed to take care of my brother?”

¹⁰The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground. ¹¹So I am putting a curse on you. I am driving you away from this ground. It has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. ¹²When you farm the land, it will not produce its crops for you anymore. You will be a restless person who wanders around on the earth.”

¹³Cain said to the Lord, “You are punishing me more than I can take. ¹⁴Today you are driving me away from the land. I will be hidden from you. I’ll be a restless person who wanders around on the earth. Anyone who finds me will kill me.”

¹⁵But the Lord said to him, “No. Anyone who kills you will be paid back seven times.” The Lord put a mark on Cain. Then anyone who found him wouldn’t kill him. ¹⁶So Cain went away from the Lord. He lived in the land of Nod. It was east of Eden.

4 亚当和他妻子夏娃同房，夏娃便怀孕，生了该隐。她说：“耶和华让我得了一个男孩。” ²后来，夏娃又生了该隐的弟弟亚伯。长大后，亚伯做了牧羊人，该隐做了农夫。

³到了收成的时候，该隐把地里的出产当祭物献给耶和华， ⁴亚伯也把羊群中头生的羊及其最肥美的部分献给耶和华。耶和华悦纳亚伯和他的祭物， ⁵却不悦纳该隐和他的祭物。该隐便非常恼火，面带怒容。 ⁶耶和华问该隐：“你为什么恼火？为什么面带怒容？ ⁷如果你做得对，难道不会蒙悦纳吗？如果你做得不对，罪就蹲在你的门口要控制你，但你必须制服罪。”

⁸该隐对弟弟亚伯说：“我们去田间吧！”^[a]他们在田间的时候，该隐动手打亚伯，把他杀了。

⁹后来，耶和华问该隐：“你弟弟亚伯在哪里？”他说：“我不知道！难道我是弟弟的看护人吗？” ¹⁰耶和华说：“你做了什么事？你弟弟的血从地里向我哭诉。 ¹¹地张开口从你手上接受了你弟弟的血，你在地上必受咒诅。 ¹²你种地，地却不会再为你长出任何东西，你必在地上四处漂泊。” ¹³该隐对耶和华说：“这惩罚太重！我承受不了。 ¹⁴今天你把我赶出去，使我不能再见你的面。我在地上四处漂泊，见到我的人都会杀我。” ¹⁵耶和华对他说：“不会的，因为凡杀你的，必遭受七倍的报应。”于是，耶和华在该隐身上留下一个记号，免得见到他的人杀他。 ¹⁶该隐离开耶和华，来到伊甸东边的挪得住下来。
