Si Jose at ang Asawa ni Potifar

39 Noon ay dinala si Jose sa Ehipto, at binili siya ni Potifar sa mga Ismaelita na nagdala sa kanya roon. Si Potifar ay pinuno ni Faraon, na kapitan ng bantay at isang taga-Ehipto.

2 Ang(A) Panginoon ay naging kasama ni Jose, at siya'y naging lalaking maunlad. Siya'y nasa bahay ng kanyang among taga-Ehipto.

3 Nakita ng kanyang amo na ang Panginoon ay kasama niya, at ang lahat ng ginagawa ni Jose ay umuunlad sa kanyang kamay.

4 Kaya't nakatagpo si Jose ng biyaya sa paningin niya at ginawa niyang kanyang katulong.[a] Ipinamahala niya kay Jose ang bahay niya at ang lahat niyang pag-aari ay inilagay sa kanyang pangangasiwa.

5 Mula nang panahon na si Jose ay pamahalain sa kanyang bahay at sa lahat ng kanyang pag-aari, pinagpala ng Panginoon ang bahay ng taga-Ehipto. Ang pagpapala ng Panginoon ay dumating sa lahat ng kanyang pag-aari, sa bahay at sa parang.

6 Kaya't ipinamahala niya ang lahat niyang pag-aari sa kamay ni Jose, at hindi siya nakikialam sa anumang bagay maliban sa tinapay na kanyang kinakain. Si Jose ay matipuno at makisig na lalaki.

7 Pagkatapos ng mga bagay na ito, tinitigan si Jose ng asawa ng kanyang panginoon at sinabi, “Sipingan mo ako.”

8 Subalit siya'y tumanggi at sinabi niya sa asawa ng kanyang panginoon, “Tingnan mo, ang aking panginoon ay hindi nakikialam sa akin tungkol sa anumang bagay na nasa bahay, at lahat ng kanyang pag-aari ay ipinamahala sa aking kamay.

9 Walang sinumang dakila kaysa akin sa bahay na ito; walang anumang bagay ang ipinagkait sa akin, maliban sa iyo, sapagkat ikaw ay kanyang asawa. Paano ngang magagawa ko itong malaking kasamaan at kasalanan laban sa Diyos?”

10 Kahit nakikiusap siya kay Jose araw-araw, ay hindi siya pumayag na siya'y sumiping o makisama sa kanya.

11 Subalit isang araw, nang siya'y pumasok sa bahay upang gawin ang kanyang gawain at walang sinumang tao sa bahay,

12 siya'y pinigilan niya sa pamamagitan ng kanyang suot, na sinasabi, “Sipingan mo ako!” Subalit naiwan ni Jose[b] ang kanyang suot sa kamay niya, at siya'y tumakas papalabas ng bahay.

13 Nang makita niyang naiwan ang kanyang suot sa kamay niya at tumakas sa labas ng bahay,

14 siya'y tumawag ng mga tao sa kanyang bahay, at sinabi sa kanila, “Tingnan ninyo, ang aking asawa[c] ay nagdala sa atin ng isang Hebreo upang tayo'y tuyain. Pinasok niya ako upang ako'y sipingan, at ako'y nagsisigaw nang malakas.

15 Nang marinig niyang ako'y nagtaas ng tinig at nagsisigaw, naiwan niya ang kanyang suot sa aking tabi at tumakas, at lumabas ng bahay.”

16 Pagkatapos ay iningatan niya ang kasuotan ni Jose[d] hanggang sa pagdating ng kanyang amo sa kanyang bahay.

17 Sinabi niya sa kanya ang mga salita ring ito, na sinasabi, “Pinasok ako ng aliping Hebreo na iyong dinala sa atin, upang tuyain ako.

18 Nang nagtaas ako ng aking tinig at ako'y nagsisigaw, kanyang naiwan ang suot niya sa aking tabi at tumakas na papalabas.”

19 Nang marinig ng kanyang amo ang mga sinabi ng kanyang asawa, na sinasabi, “Ganito ang ginawa sa akin ng iyong alipin;” ay nag-alab ang kanyang galit.

20 Kinuha si Jose ng kanyang panginoon at inilagay sa bilangguan, sa lugar na pinagkukulungan ng mga bilanggo ng hari.

21 Subalit(B) kasama ni Jose ang Panginoon at nagpakita sa kanya ng tapat na pag-ibig, at pinagkalooban siya ng biyaya sa paningin ng bantay sa bilangguan.

22 Ipinamahala ng bantay sa bilangguan sa pangangalaga ni Jose ang lahat na mga bilanggo na nasa bilangguan; at anumang ginagawa nila roon ay siya ang gumagawa.

23 Hindi pinakialaman ng bantay sa bilangguan ang anumang bagay na nasa pamamahala ni Jose sapagkat ang Panginoon ay kasama niya. Anumang kanyang ginagawa ay pinagpapala ng Panginoon.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

39 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt.[a] An Egyptian named Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard,[b] purchased him from[c] the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph. He was successful[d] and lived[e] in the household of his Egyptian master. 3 His master observed that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he was doing successful.[f] 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant.[g] Potiphar appointed Joseph[h] overseer of his household and put him in charge[i] of everything he owned. 5 From the time[j] Potiphar[k] appointed him over his household and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed[l] the Egyptian’s household for Joseph’s sake. The blessing of the Lord was on everything that he had, both[m] in his house and in his fields.[n] 6 So Potiphar[o] left[p] everything he had in Joseph’s care;[q] he gave no thought[r] to anything except the food he ate.[s]

Now Joseph was well built and good-looking.[t] 7 Soon after these things, his master’s wife took notice of[u] Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me.”[v] 8 But he refused, saying[w] to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not give any thought[x] to his household with me here,[y] and everything that he owns he has put into my care.[z] 9 There is no one greater in this household than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you because you are his wife. So how could I do[aa] such a great evil and sin against God?” 10 Even though she continued to speak[ab] to Joseph day after day, he did not respond[ac] to her invitation to go to bed with her.[ad]

11 One day[ae] he went into the house to do his work when none of the household servants[af] were there in the house. 12 She grabbed him by his outer garment, saying, “Come to bed[ag] with me!” But he left his outer garment in her hand and ran[ah] outside.[ai] 13 When she saw that he had left his outer garment in her hand and had run outside, 14 she called for her household servants and said to them, “See, my husband brought[aj] in a Hebrew man[ak] to us to humiliate us.[al] He tried to go to bed with me,[am] but I screamed loudly.[an] 15 When he heard me raise[ao] my voice and scream, he left his outer garment beside me and ran outside.”

16 So she laid his outer garment beside her until his master came home. 17 This is what she said to him:[ap] “That Hebrew slave[aq] you brought to us tried to humiliate me,[ar] 18 but when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his outer garment and ran outside.”

19 When his master heard his wife say,[as] “This is the way[at] your slave treated me,”[au] he became furious.[av] 20 Joseph’s master took him and threw him into the prison,[aw] the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. So he was there in the prison.[ax]

21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him kindness.[ay] He granted him favor in the sight of the prison warden.[az] 22 The warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care. He was in charge of whatever they were doing.[ba] 23 The warden did not concern himself[bb] with anything that was in Joseph’s[bc] care because the Lord was with him and whatever he was doing the Lord was making successful.

  12. Genesis 39:5 sn The Hebrew word translated blessed carries the idea of enrichment, prosperity, success. It is the way believers describe success at the hand of God. The text illustrates the promise made to Abraham that whoever blesses his descendants will be blessed (Gen 12:1-3).
  13. Genesis 39:5 tn Heb “in the house and in the field.” The word “both” has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  14. Genesis 39:5 sn The passage gives us a good picture of Joseph as a young man who was responsible and faithful, both to his master and to his God. This happened within a very short time of his being sold into Egypt. It undermines the view that Joseph was a liar, a tattletale, and an arrogant adolescent.
  15. Genesis 39:6 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Potiphar) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  16. Genesis 39:6 sn The Hebrew verb translated left indicates he relinquished the care of it to Joseph. This is stronger than what was said earlier. Apparently Potiphar had come to trust Joseph so much that he knew it was in better care with Joseph than with anyone else.
  17. Genesis 39:6 tn Heb “hand.” This is a metonymy for being under the control or care of Joseph.
  18. Genesis 39:6 tn Heb “did not know.”
  19. Genesis 39:6 sn The expression except the food he ate probably refers to Potiphar’s private affairs and should not be limited literally to what he ate.
  20. Genesis 39:6 tn Heb “handsome of form and handsome of appearance.” The same Hebrew expressions were used in Gen 29:17 for Rachel.
  21. Genesis 39:7 tn Heb “she lifted up her eyes toward,” an expression that emphasizes her deliberate and careful scrutiny of him.
  22. Genesis 39:7 tn Heb “lie down with.” The verb שָׁכַב (shakhav) “to lie down” can be a euphemism for going to bed for sexual relations.sn The story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife has long been connected with the wisdom warnings about the strange woman who tries to seduce the young man with her boldness and directness (see Prov 5-7, especially 7:6-27). This is part of the literary background of the story of Joseph that gives it a wisdom flavor. See G. von Rad, God at Work in Israel, 19-35; and G. W. Thus the translation supplies “my husband” as the referent of the unspecified pronominal subject of the verb (cf. NEB, NRSV).
  37. Genesis 39:14 sn A Hebrew man. Potiphar’s wife raises the ethnic issue when talking to her servants about what their boss had done.
  38. Genesis 39:14 tn Heb “to make fun of us.” The verb translated “to humiliate us” here means to hold something up for ridicule, or to toy with something harmfully. Attempted rape would be such an activity, for it would hold the victim in contempt.
  39. Genesis 39:14 tn Heb “He approached me to lie down with me.” Both expressions can be a euphemism for sexual relations. See the note at 2 Sam 12:24.
  40. Genesis 39:14 tn Heb “and I cried out with a loud voice.”
  41. Genesis 39:15 tn Heb “that I raised.”
  42. Genesis 39:17 tn Heb “and she spoke to him according to these words, saying.”
  43. Genesis 39:17 sn That Hebrew slave. Now, when speaking to her husband, Potiphar’s wife refers to Joseph as a Hebrew slave, a very demeaning description.
  44. Genesis 39:17 tn Heb “came to me to make fun of me.” The statement needs no explanation because of the connotations of “came to me” and “to make fun of me.” See the note on the expression “humiliate us” in v. 14.

2 The Lord was with Joseph(D) so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(E) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(F) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(G) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(H) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(I) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(J) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(K) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(L) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(M) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(S) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(T) to go to bed with her or even be with her.

11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(U) and none of the household servants(V) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(W) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(X) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(Y)

13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(Z) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(AA) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(AB) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(AC) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(AD)

16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(AE) “That Hebrew(AF) slave(AG) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(AH) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(AI) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.

But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(AJ) he showed him kindness(AK) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(AL) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(AM) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(AN) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(AO)

E ele deixou a sua veste na mão dela, e fugiu, e saiu para fora. 13 E aconteceu que, vendo ela que deixara a sua veste em sua mão e fugira para fora, 14 chamou os homens de sua casa e falou-lhes, dizendo: Vede, trouxe-nos o varão hebreu para escarnecer de nós; entrou até mim para deitar-se comigo, e eu gritei com grande voz. 15 E aconteceu que, ouvindo ele que eu levantava a minha voz e gritava, deixou a sua veste comigo, e fugiu, e saiu para fora. 16 E ela pôs a sua veste perto de si, até que o seu senhor veio à sua casa. 17 Então, falou-lhe conforme as mesmas palavras, dizendo: Veio a mim o servo hebreu, que nos trouxeste para escarnecer de mim. 18 E aconteceu que, levantando eu a minha voz e gritando, ele deixou a sua veste comigo e fugiu para fora. 19 E aconteceu que, ouvindo o seu senhor as palavras de sua mulher, que lhe falava, dizendo: Conforme estas mesmas palavras me fez teu servo, a sua ira se acendeu. 20 E o senhor de José o tomou e o entregou na casa do cárcere, no lugar onde os presos do rei estavam presos; assim, esteve ali na casa do cárcere. 21 O Senhor, porém, estava com José, e estendeu sobre ele a sua benignidade, e deu-lhe graça aos olhos do carcereiro-mor. 22 E o carcereiro-mor entregou na mão de José todos os presos que estavam na casa do cárcere; e ele fazia tudo o que se fazia ali. 23 E o carcereiro-mor não teve cuidado de nenhuma coisa que estava na mão dele, porquanto o Senhor estava com ele; e tudo o que ele fazia o Senhor prosperava.
