Joseph in Potiphar’s House
39 Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites(A) who had brought him there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph,(B) and he became a successful man, serving[a] in the household of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he did successful,(C) 4 Joseph found favor(D) with his master and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority.[b] 5 From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph.(E) The Lord’s blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields. 6 He left all that he owned under Joseph’s authority;[c] he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.(F) 7 After some time his master’s wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
8 But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.[d] 9 No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?” (G)
10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her.[e] 11 Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.[f] 12 She grabbed him by his garment and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. 13 When she saw that he had left his garment with her and had run outside, 14 she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could. 15 When he heard me screaming for help,[g] he left his garment beside me and ran outside.”
16 She put Joseph’s garment beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me, 18 but when I screamed for help,[h] he left his garment beside me and ran outside.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him—“These are the things your slave did to me”—he was furious 20 and had him thrown into prison,(H) where the king’s prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison.
Joseph in Prison
21 But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him.(I) He granted him favor with the prison warden.(J) 22 The warden put all the prisoners who were in the prison under Joseph’s authority,[i] and he was responsible for everything that was done there. 23 The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph’s authority,[j] because the Lord was with him, and the Lord made everything that he did successful.(K)

39 Efter at Josef var bragt til Egypten af ishmaelitterne, blev han som nævnt købt af Potifar, der var chef for egypterkongens livvagt. 2 Herren velsignede Josef og hans arbejde i hans egyptiske herres hus. Alting lykkedes for ham. 3 Selv Potifar indså, at Josef var under Herrens særlige velsignelse, da alting åbenbart lykkedes for ham. 4 Derfor valgte Potifar hurtigt Josef som sin personlige tjener, lod ham bestyre hele sin ejendom og gav ham ansvaret for alle sine forretningsforetagender. 5 Straks begyndte Herren for Josefs skyld at velsigne Potifar og alt, hvad han ejede, både hans landbrug og hans husholdning. 6 Til sidst overlod Potifar hele ansvaret for sin ejendom til Josef og bekymrede sig ikke om noget som helst—udover den mad, han spiste.
Josef var velbygget og så godt ud, 7 og det varede ikke længe, før hans herres kone sendte ham lange blikke. En dag sagde hun: „Kom og gå i seng med mig!” 8 Men Josef afviste hendes tilnærmelser. „Min herre har fuld tillid til mig og har givet mig ansvar for alt, hvad han ejer, 9 og samme autoritet, som han selv har,” sagde han til hende. „Jeg har adgang til alt, hvad han har—bortset fra dig, for du er hans kone. Hvordan skulle jeg da kunne gøre noget så usselt? Det ville være en stor synd mod Gud!”
10 Dag efter dag blev hun ved med at friste ham, men han nægtede at gå i seng med hende og i det hele taget at have noget med hende at gøre. 11 Men en dag, da han som sædvanlig kom ind i huset for at arbejde, og der ingen andre tjenestefolk var i nærheden, 12 greb hun fat i hans kjortel. „Kom og lig med mig!” beordrede hun. Men Josef rev sig løs og flygtede ud af huset, og hun stod tilbage med hans kjortel i hånden. 13 Da hun så, at hun havde hans kjortel, fik hun en idé: 14-15 Hun begyndte at skrige! Og tjenestefolkene kom straks løbende for at se, hvad der var på færde. „Har min mand bragt den elendige hebræer hertil for at vanære mig?” hulkede hun. „Han forsøgte at voldtage mig—men da jeg begyndte at skrige, flygtede han. Se, her er hans kjortel!”
16 Hun beholdt kjortlen, og da hendes mand om aftenen kom hjem, 17 fortalte hun ham samme historie. „Den hebræiske slave, som du har bragt hertil, trængte ind til mig og forsøgte at voldtage mig! 18 Men jeg skreg, og han flygtede så hurtigt, at han ikke nåede at få sin kjortel med.”
Josef kommer i fængsel
19 Da Potifar hørte, hvad hun fortalte, blev han rasende. 20 Han arresterede Josef og kastede ham i det fængsel, hvor kongens fanger sad. 21 Men også der var Herren med Josef, så han hurtigt blev ven med fængselsinspektøren. 22 Inden længe fik han ansvaret for de andre fanger og for alle aktiviteterne i fængslet. 23 Fængselsinspektøren havde ikke længere noget at bekymre sig om, for Josef tog sig af det hele. Herren var med Josef, og alting lykkedes for ham.

39 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

And (B)Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, (C)bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. 2 (D)The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord (E)made all he did [a]to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph (F)found favor in his sight, and served him. Now Joseph (I)was handsome in form and appearance.

He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”
16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home. 17 Then she (P)spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me; 18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his (Q)anger was aroused. 20 Then Joseph’s master took him and (R)put him into the (S)prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He (T)gave[g] him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison (U)committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under [h]Joseph’s authority, because (V)the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
