⁶ So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;^(A) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,^{(B) 7} and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”^(C)

⁸ But he refused.^(D) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.^{(E) 9} No one is greater in this house than I am.^(F) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”^{(G) 10} And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused^(H) to go to bed with her or even be with her.

¹¹ One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,^(I) and none of the household servants^(J) was inside. ¹² She caught him by his cloak^(K) and said, “Come to bed with me!”^(L) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.^(M)

¹⁶ She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. ¹⁷ Then she told him this story:^(A) “That Hebrew^(B) slave^(C) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. ¹⁸ But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

¹⁹ When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.^{(D) 20} Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,^(E) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.

But while Joseph was there in the prison, ²¹ the Lord was with him;^(F) he showed him kindness^(G) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.^{(H) 22} So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.^{(I) 23} The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s^(J) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.^(K)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah^(A)(B)

¹⁸ Once when Jesus was praying^(C) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

¹⁹ They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;^(D) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”^(E)

²⁰ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”^(F)

Jesus Predicts His Death

²¹ Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.^{(G) 22} And he said, “The Son of Man^(H) must suffer many things^(I) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(J) and he must be killed^(K) and on the third day^(L) be raised to life.”^(M)

²³ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^{(N) 24} For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.^(O)

²⁴ By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.^{(A) 25} He chose to be mistreated^(B) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. ²⁶ He regarded disgrace^(C) for the sake of Christ^(D) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.^(E)
