37 So Jacob dwelt in the land in which his father had been a stranger and sojourner, in the land of Canaan.
2 This is the history of the descendants of Jacob and this is Jacob’s line. Joseph, when he was seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s [secondary] wives; and Joseph brought to his father a bad report of them.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves.
4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved [Joseph] more than all of his brothers, they hated him and could not say, Peace [in friendly greeting] to him or speak peaceably to him.
5 Now Joseph had a dream and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him still more.
6 And he said to them, Listen now and hear, I pray you, this dream that I have dreamed:
7 We [brothers] were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright, and behold, your sheaves stood round about my sheaf and bowed down!
8 His brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? Or are you going to have us as your subjects and dominate us? And they hated him all the more for his dreams and for what he said.
9 But Joseph dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers [also]. He said, See here, I have dreamed again, and behold, [this time not only] eleven stars [but also] the sun and the moon bowed down and did reverence to me!
10 And he told it to his father [as well as] his brethren. But his father rebuked him and said to him, What is the meaning of this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow down ourselves to the earth and do homage to you?
11 Joseph’s brothers envied him and were jealous of him, but his father observed the saying and pondered over it.
12 Joseph’s brothers went to shepherd and feed their father’s flock near Shechem.
13 [One day] Israel said to Joseph, Do not your brothers shepherd my flock at Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them. And he said, Here I am.
14 And [Jacob] said to him, Go, I pray you, see whether everything is all right with your brothers and with the flock; then come back and bring me word. So he sent him out of the Hebron Valley, and he came to Shechem.
15 And a certain man found him, and behold, he had lost his way and was wandering in the open country. The man asked him, What are you trying to find?
16 And he said, I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, I pray you, where they are pasturing our flocks.
17 But the man said, [They were here, but] they have gone. I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
18 And when they saw him far off, even before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him.
19 And they said one to another, See, here comes this dreamer and master of dreams.
20 So come on now, let us kill him and throw his body into some pit; then we will say [to our father], Some wild and ferocious animal has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams!
21 Now Reuben heard it and he delivered him out of their hands by saying, Let us not kill him.
22 And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit or well that is out here in the wilderness and lay no hand on him. He was trying to get Joseph out of their hands in order to rescue him and deliver him again to his father.
23 When Joseph had come to his brothers, they stripped him of his [distinctive] long garment which he was wearing;
24 Then they took him and cast him into the [well-like] pit which was empty; there was no water in it.
25 Then they sat down to eat their lunch. When they looked up, behold, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites [mixed Arabians] coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum [of the styrax tree], balm (balsam), and myrrh or ladanum, going on their way to carry them down to Egypt.
26 And Judah said to his brothers, What do we gain if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?
27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites [and Midianites, these mixed Arabians who are approaching], and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers consented.
28 Then as the Midianite [and Ishmaelite] merchants were passing by, the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the well. And they sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took Joseph [captive] into Egypt.
29 Then Reuben [who had not been there when the brothers plotted to sell the lad] returned to the pit; and behold, Joseph was not in the pit, and he rent his clothes.
30 He rejoined his brothers and said, The boy is not there! And I, where shall I go [to hide from my father]?
31 Then they took Joseph’s [distinctive] long garment, killed a young goat, and dipped the garment in the blood;
32 And they sent the garment to their father, saying, We have found this! Examine and decide whether it is your son’s tunic or not.
33 He said, My son’s long garment! An evil [wild] beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
34 And Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned many days for his son.
35 And all his sons and daughters attempted to console him, but he refused to be comforted and said, I will go down to Sheol (the place of the dead) to my son mourning. And his father wept for him.
36 And the Midianites [and Ishmaelites] sold [Joseph] in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain and chief executioner of the [royal] guard.

2 Und dies sind die Geschlechter Jakobs: Joseph war siebzehn Jahre alt, da er ein Hirte des Viehs ward mit seinen Brüdern; und der Knabe war bei den Kinder Bilhas und Silpas, der Weiber seines Vaters, und brachte vor ihren Vater, wo ein böses Geschrei wider sie war.
3 Israel aber hatte Joseph lieber als alle seine Kinder, darum daß er ihn im Alter gezeugt hatte; und machte ihm einen bunten Rock.
4 Da nun seine Brüder sahen, daß ihn ihr Vater lieber hatte als alle seine Brüder, waren sie ihm feind und konnten ihm kein freundlich Wort zusprechen.
5 Dazu hatte Joseph einmal einen Traum und sagte zu seinen Brüdern davon; da wurden sie ihm noch feinder.
6 Denn er sprach zu ihnen: Höret doch, was mir geträumt hat:
7 Mich deuchte, wir banden Garben auf dem Felde, und meine Garbe richtete sich auf und stand, und eure Garben umher neigten sich vor meiner Garbe.
8 Da sprachen seine Brüder zu ihm: Solltest du unser König werden und über uns herrschen? und sie wurden ihm noch feinder um seines Traumes und seiner Rede willen.
9 Und er hatte noch einen andern Traum, den erzählte er seinen Brüdern und sprach: Siehe, ich habe einen Traum gehabt: Mich deuchte, die Sonne und der Mond und elf Sterne neigten sich vor mir.
10 Und da das seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern gesagt ward, strafte ihn sein Vater und sprach zu ihm: Was ist das für ein Traum, der dir geträumt hat? Soll ich und deine Mutter und deine Brüder kommen und vor dir niederfallen?
11 Und seine Brüder beneideten ihn. Aber sein Vater behielt diese Worte.
12 Da nun seine Brüder hingingen, zu weiden das Vieh ihres Vaters in Sichem,
13 sprach Israel zu Joseph: Hüten nicht deine Brüder das Vieh in Sichem? Komm, ich will dich zu ihnen senden. Er aber sprach: Hier bin ich.
14 Und er sprach: Gehe hin und sieh, ob's wohl stehe um deine Brüder und um das Vieh, und sage mir wieder Antwort. Und er sandte ihn aus dem Tal Hebron, daß er gen Sichem ginge.
15 Da fand ihn ein Mann, daß er irreging auf dem Felde; der fragte ihn und sprach: Wen suchst du?
16 Er antwortete: Ich suche meine Brüder; sage mir doch an, wo sie hüten.
17 Der Mann sprach: Sie sind von dannen gezogen; denn ich hörte, daß sie sagten: Laßt uns gen Dothan gehen. Da folgte Joseph seinen Brüdern nach und fand sie zu Dothan.
18 Als sie ihn nun sahen von ferne, ehe er denn nahe zu ihnen kam machten sie einen Anschlag, daß sie ihn töteten,
19 und sprachen untereinander: Seht, der Träumer kommt daher.
20 So kommt nun und laßt uns ihn erwürgen und in eine Grube werfen und sagen, ein böses Tier habe ihn gefressen, so wird man sehen, was seine Träume sind.
21 Da das Ruben hörte, wollte er ihn aus ihren Händen erretten, und sprach: Laßt uns ihn nicht töten.
22 Und weiter sprach Ruben zu ihnen: Vergießt nicht Blut, sondern werft ihn in die Grube, die in der Wüste ist, und legt die Hand nicht an ihn. Er wollte ihn aber aus ihrer Hand erretten, daß er ihn seinem Vater wiederbrächte.
23 Als nun Joseph zu seinen Brüdern kam, zogen sie ihm seinen Rock, den bunten Rock, aus, den er anhatte,
24 und nahmen ihn und warfen ihn in die Grube; aber die Grube war leer und kein Wasser darin.
25 Und setzten sich nieder, zu essen. Indes hoben sie ihre Augen auf und sahen einen Haufen Ismaeliter kommen von Gilead mit ihren Kamelen; die trugen Würze, Balsam und Myrrhe und zogen hinab nach Ägypten.
26 Da sprach Juda zu seinen Brüdern: Was hilft's uns, daß wir unseren Bruder erwürgen und sein Blut verbergen?
27 Kommt, laßt uns ihn den Ismaeliten verkaufen, daß sich unsre Hände nicht an ihm vergreifen; denn er ist unser Bruder, unser Fleisch und Blut. Und sie gehorchten ihm.
28 Und da die Midianiter, die Kaufleute, vorüberreisten, zogen sie ihn heraus aus der Grube und verkauften ihn den Ismaeliten um zwanzig Silberlinge; die brachte ihn nach Ägypten.
29 Als nun Ruben wieder zur Grube kam und fand er Joseph nicht darin, zerriß er sein Kleid
30 und kam wieder zu seinen Brüdern und sprach: Der Knabe ist nicht da! Wo soll ich hin?
31 Da nahmen sie Josephs Rock und schlachteten einen Ziegenbock und tauchten den Rock ins Blut
32 und schickten den bunten Rock hin und ließen ihn ihrem Vater bringen und sagen: Diesen haben wir gefunden; sieh, ob's deines Sohnes Rock sei oder nicht.
33 Er erkannte ihn aber und sprach: Es ist meines Sohnes Rock; ein böses Tier hat ihn gefressen, ein reißendes Tier hat Joseph zerrissen.
34 Und Jakob zerriß sein Kleider und legte einen Sack um seine Lenden und trug Leid um seinen Sohn lange Zeit.
35 Und alle seine Söhne und Töchter traten auf, daß sie ihn trösteten; aber er wollte sich nicht trösten lassen und sprach: Ich werde mit Leid hinunterfahren in die Grube zu meinem Sohn. Und sein Vater beweinte ihn.
36 Aber die Midianiter verkauften ihn in Ägypten dem Potiphar, des Pharao Kämmerer und Hauptmann der Leibwache.

37 Now Jacob dwelt in the land (A)where his father was a [a]stranger, in the land of Canaan. 2 This is the history of Jacob.
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought (B)a bad report of them to his father.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was (C)the son of his old age. Also he (D)made him a tunic of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they (E)hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. 6 So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: 7 (F)There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, (G)the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and (H)your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” 11 And (I)his brothers envied him, but his father (J)kept the matter in mind.
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
12 Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in (K)Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.”
So he said to him, “Here I am.”
14 Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of (L)Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”
16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. (M)Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.”
17 And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in (N)Dothan.
18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, (O)they conspired against him to kill him. 19 Then they said to one another, “Look, this [b]dreamer is coming! 20 (P)Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”

25 (S)And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of (T)Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, (U)balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 26 So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and (V)conceal his blood? 27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and (W)let not our hand be upon him, for he is (X)our brother and (Y)our flesh.” And his brothers listened. 28 Then (Z)Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, (AA)and sold him to the Ishmaelites for (AB)twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he (AC)tore his clothes. 30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The lad (AD)is no more; and I, where shall I go?”
31 So they took (AE)Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?”
33 And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic. A (AF)wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob (AG)tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and (AH)mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters (AI)arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For (AJ)I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.
36 Now (AK)the [c]Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.

Joseph’s Dreams

2 This is the account(C) of Jacob’s family line.
Joseph,(D) a young man of seventeen,(E) was tending the flocks(F) with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah(G) and the sons of Zilpah,(H) his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report(I) about them.
3 Now Israel(J) loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,(K) because he had been born to him in his old age;(L) and he made an ornate[a] robe(M) for him.(N) 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him(O) and could not speak a kind word to him.
5 Joseph had a dream,(P) and when he told it to his brothers,(Q) they hated him all the more.(R) 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves(S) of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”(T)
8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?”(U) And they hated him all the more(V) because of his dream and what he had said.
9 Then he had another dream,(W) and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars(X) were bowing down to me.”(Y)
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers,(Z) his father rebuked(AA) him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”(AB) 11 His brothers were jealous of him,(AC) but his father kept the matter in mind.(AD)
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,(AE) 13 and Israel(AF) said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.(AG) Come, I am going to send you to them.”
“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers(AH) and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.(AI)
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.(AJ)’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.(AK)
19 “Here comes that dreamer!(AL)” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns(AM) and say that a ferocious animal(AN) devoured him.(AO) Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”(AP)
21 When Reuben(AQ) heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.(AR) 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern(AS) here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.(AT)
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe(AU) he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern.(AV) The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites(AW) coming from Gilead.(AX) Their camels were loaded with spices, balm(AY) and myrrh,(AZ) and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.(BA)
26 Judah(BB) said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?(BC) 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother,(BD) our own flesh and blood.(BE)” His brothers agreed.
28 So when the Midianite(BF) merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern(BG) and sold(BH) him for twenty shekels[b] of silver(BI) to the Ishmaelites,(BJ) who took him to Egypt.(BK)
29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.(BL) 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”(BM)
31 Then they got Joseph’s robe,(BN) slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.(BO) 32 They took the ornate robe(BP) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”
33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal(BQ) has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”(BR)
34 Then Jacob tore his clothes,(BS) put on sackcloth(BT) and mourned for his son many days.(BU) 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him,(BV) but he refused to be comforted.(BW) “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son(BX) in the grave.(BY)” So his father wept for him.
36 Meanwhile, the Midianites[c](BZ) sold Joseph(CA) in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.(CB)
