Joseph had a dream,(A) and when he told it to his brothers,(B) they hated him all the more.(C) He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves(D) of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”(E)

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?”(F) And they hated him all the more(G) because of his dream and what he had said.

Then he had another dream,(H) and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars(I) were bowing down to me.”(J)

10 When he told his father as well as his brothers,(K) his father rebuked(L) him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”(M) 11 His brothers were jealous of him,(N) but his father kept the matter in mind.(O)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(A) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(B) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(C) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a](D) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(E) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
