Joseph,^(B) a young man of seventeen,^(C) was tending the flocks^(D) with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah^(E) and the sons of Zilpah,^(F) his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report^(G) about them.

⁹ No one is greater in this house than I am.^(A) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”^(B)

¹⁶ “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”^(A)

¹⁸ On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:^(A)

⁸ “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.^(A) He made me father^(B) to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.^(C)

¹⁹ But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?^{(A) 20} You intended to harm me,^(B) but God intended^(C) it for good^(D) to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.^(E)
