Gia-cốp Trở Lại Bê-tên
35 Ðức Chúa Trời phán với Gia-cốp, “Hãy đứng dậy, đi lên Bê-tên và định cư tại đó. Hãy xây một bàn thờ để thờ phượng Ðức Chúa Trời, Ðấng đã hiện ra với ngươi khi ngươi chạy trốn khỏi Ê-sau anh ngươi.”
2 Gia-cốp nói với gia đình ông và mọi người thuộc về ông, “Hãy dẹp bỏ các tượng thần dân ngoại ở giữa các người. Hãy thanh tẩy sạch sẽ, và mặc y phục sạch vào. 3 Sau đó hãy đến; chúng ta hãy đi lên Bê-tên để cha có thể xây một bàn thờ cho Ðức Chúa Trời tại đó. Ngài là Ðấng đã đáp lời cha trong ngày cha gặp gian truân và luôn ở với cha bất cứ nơi nào cha đặt chân đến.” 4 Vậy họ trao cho Gia-cốp tất cả các tượng thần dân ngoại họ có, và những vòng trang sức đeo nơi tai họ. Gia-cốp chôn tất cả những thứ đó dưới gốc cây sồi gần Si-chem.
5 Khi họ lên đường, Ðức Chúa Trời giáng một cơn kinh hãi xuống các thành xung quanh họ, nên không ai dám đuổi theo các con của Gia-cốp. 6 Gia-cốp và đoàn người đi với ông đến Lu-xơ, cũng gọi là Bê-tên, trong xứ Ca-na-an. 7 Tại đó ông dựng một bàn thờ và gọi nơi đó là Ên Bê-tên,[a] vì nơi đó Ðức Chúa Trời đã bày tỏ chính Ngài cho ông khi ông trốn khỏi Ê-sau anh ông. 8 Bấy giờ Ðê-bô-ra bà vú của Rê-be-ca qua đời. Bà được chôn bên gốc cây sồi tại Si-chem, vì thế chỗ đó được gọi là Cây Sồi Than Khóc.
9 Ðức Chúa Trời lại hiện ra với Gia-cốp khi ông từ xứ Pa-đan A-ram trở về. Ngài ban phước cho ông. 10 Ðức Chúa Trời phán với ông, “Tên ngươi là Gia-cốp, nhưng ngươi sẽ không được gọi là Gia-cốp nữa; từ nay tên ngươi sẽ là I-sơ-ra-ên.” Vì thế ông được gọi là I-sơ-ra-ên. 11 Ðức Chúa Trời phán với ông, “Ta là Ðức Chúa Trời Toàn Năng.[b] Hãy sinh sôi nảy nở thật nhiều, để một quốc gia và một cộng đồng của nhiều quốc gia sẽ ra từ ngươi, và các vua sẽ ra từ ngươi. 12 Ta sẽ ban cho ngươi xứ Ta đã ban cho Áp-ra-ham và I-sác. Ta sẽ ban xứ ấy cho dòng dõi ngươi sinh ra sau này.” 13 Sau đó Ðức Chúa Trời từ nơi ấy, tức từ chỗ Ngài đã phán với ông, ngự lên. 14 Gia-cốp dựng một trụ đá nơi Ngài đã phán với ông. Ông đổ rượu lên trụ để dâng làm của lễ; sau đó ông đổ dầu lên trụ để biến trụ đá ấy ra thánh. 15 Gia-cốp gọi nơi Ðức Chúa Trời đã phán với ông là Bê-tên.
Bên-gia-min Ra Ðời và Ra-chên Qua Ðời
16 Sau đó họ rời Bê-tên ra đi. Khi họ còn cách Ép-rát không bao xa thì Ra-chên đến ngày sinh con, nhưng bà sinh khó. 17 Trong lúc bà đang đau đớn vì khó sinh, bà mụ nói, “Xin bà đừng sợ, vì bà sắp có một con trai nữa.” 18 Khi sắp tắt hơi, vì bà đang hấp hối, bà đặt tên nó là Bên Ô-ni,[c] nhưng cha nó gọi nó là Bên-gia-min.[d] 19 Ra-chên qua đời và được chôn bên đường đi đến Ép-rát hay Bết-lê-hem. 20 Gia-cốp dựng một bia đá nơi mộ bà, đó là bia đá của mộ Ra-chên. Bia đá ấy vẫn còn đó đến ngày nay. 21 I-sơ-ra-ên tiếp tục cuộc hành trình, và khi qua khỏi Tháp Ê-đe một khoảng thì ông dựng lều.
22 Trong thời gian I-sơ-ra-ên cư ngụ trong xứ ấy, Ru-bên đã đến và nằm với Bin-ha, vợ hầu của cha chàng, và người ta báo cho I-sơ-ra-ên hay việc đó.
Các Con của Gia-cốp
(1 Sử 2:1-2)
Ðây là mười hai con trai của Gia-cốp: 23 Các con trai do Lê-a sinh là Ru-bên con đầu lòng của Gia-cốp, Si-mê-ôn, Lê-vi, Giu-đa, I-sa-ca, và Xê-bu-lun. 24 Các con trai của Ra-chên là Giô-sép và Bên-gia-min. 25 Các con trai của Bin-ha nữ tỳ của Ra-chên là Ðan và Náp-ta-li. 26 Các con trai của Xinh-pa nữ tỳ của Lê-a là Gát và A-se. Ðó là các con trai của Gia-cốp, những đứa con ông sinh được khi còn ở Pa-đan A-ram.
I-sác Qua đời
27 Gia-cốp đến thăm cha ông là I-sác tại Mam-rê, trong vùng Ki-ri-át Ạc-ba, tức là Hếp-rôn, nơi Áp-ra-ham và I-sác sống như những kiều dân. 28 I-sác hưởng thọ một trăm tám mươi tuổi. 29 I-sác trút hơi thở cuối cùng, qua đời, và được quy về với tổ tiên ông trong lúc tuổi đã cao. Ông hưởng trọn tuổi thọ của ông. Các con ông là Ê-sau và Gia-cốp mai táng ông.

God Blesses and Renames Jacob
35 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (A)Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you (B)when you fled from your brother Esau.” 2 So Jacob said to his (C)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (D)the foreign gods that are among you and (E)purify yourselves and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God (F)who answers me in the day of my distress and (G)has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under (H)the terebinth tree that was near Shechem.
5 And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 And Jacob came to (I)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, 7 and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,[a] because (J)there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. 8 And (K)Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth.[b]
9 God appeared[c] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (L)no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but (M)Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. 11 And God said to him, (N)“I am God Almighty:[d] be (O)fruitful and multiply. (P)A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.[e] 12 (Q)The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.” 13 Then God (R)went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. 14 And Jacob (S)set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. 15 So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him (T)Bethel.
The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance[f] from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor. 17 And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for (U)you have another son.” 18 And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni;[g] (V)but his father called him Benjamin.[h] 19 So (W)Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to (X)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem), 20 and Jacob set up a pillar over her tomb. It is (Y)the pillar of Rachel's tomb, which is there to this day. 21 Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22 While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and (Z)lay with Bilhah his father's concubine. And Israel heard of it.
Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. 23 The sons of Leah: (AA)Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali. 26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 And Jacob came to his father Isaac at (AB)Mamre, or (AC)Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. 28 Now the days of Isaac were 180 years. 29 And Isaac breathed his last, and he died (AD)and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And (AE)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

35 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
7 And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
21 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
23 The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:
24 The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:
25 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:
26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padanaram.
27 And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
28 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.
29 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
