Sichem en Dina
34 Op een dag verliet Leaʼs dochter Dina het kamp om haar vriendinnen te bezoeken. 2 Toen zag Sichem, de zoon van de Chiwwitische koning Chamor, haar. Hij nam haar mee, had gemeenschap met haar en onteerde haar zo. 3 Hij werd hals-over-kop verliefd op Dina en probeerde haar voor zich te winnen. 4 Hij sprak er met zijn vader over. ‘Zorg dat ik dat meisje krijg,’ zei hij, ‘want ik wil met haar trouwen.’ 5 Jakob hoorde al snel wat er was gebeurd, maar zijn zonen waren met het vee op het land, dus wachtte hij tot zij terug waren.
6,7 Koning Chamor kwam naar het kamp om met Jakob te praten. Tegelijk met hem kwamen Jakobs zonen terug, geschokt en boos over de belediging die hun via hun zuster was aangedaan. 8 Chamor zei tegen Jakob: ‘Mijn zoon Sichem houdt echt van uw dochter en wil haar als zijn vrouw. Laat hem alstublieft met haar trouwen. 9,10 Wij willen graag dat u en uw mensen bij ons blijven wonen. Dan kunnen uw dochters met onze jonge mannen en onze dochters met uw jonge mannen trouwen. U kunt wonen waar u wilt en uw eigen leven leiden en rijk worden!’ 11 Toen richtte Sichem zich tot Dinaʼs vader en broers. ‘Wees zo vriendelijk mij Dina als vrouw te geven,’ smeekte hij. ‘Ik zal u alles geven wat u vraagt. 12 Ongeacht welke bruidsschat of welk geschenk u vraagt, ik zal het betalen. Geeft u mij alstublieft het meisje als vrouw.’
13 Toen logen haar broers tegen Sichem en Chamor, vanwege de schande die Sichem hun zuster had bezorgd. 14 ‘Dat kunnen wij niet doen,’ zeiden ze, ‘want u bent niet besneden. Het zou een schande voor haar zijn met zoʼn man te trouwen. 15 De enige mogelijkheid is dat alle mannen uit uw stad zich laten besnijden. 16 Dan kunnen wij onderling huwelijken sluiten en hier wonen. Zo kunnen wij één volk worden. 17 Als dat niet kan, vertrekken wij en nemen haar mee.’
18 Chamor en Sichem stemden blij toe 19 en maakten er snel werk van. Sichem was helemaal weg van Dina en dacht dat de mannen van de stad zich wel met het idee van een besnijdenis konden verzoenen, want hij was een geacht en populair man. 20 Zo legden Chamor en Sichem het plan voor aan de mannen van de stad. 21 ‘Die mannen zijn onze vrienden,’ zeiden zij. ‘Laten wij hun vragen hier bij ons te wonen en hun werk te doen. Het land is groot genoeg voor ons allen en wij kunnen dan onderling huwelijken sluiten. 22 Ze stellen echter één voorwaarde om hier te blijven: wij moeten ons allemaal laten besnijden, net zoals zij. 23 Als we dat doen, is al hun bezit ook het onze. Laten we akkoord gaan, zodat zij zich hier vestigen.’ 24 De mannen van de stad stemden in met het voorstel en iedereen werd besneden.
25 Maar drie dagen later, toen de wonden elke beweging tot een marteling maakten, namen twee broers van Dina, Simeon en Levi, hun zwaard, gingen de stad in en doodden, zonder op tegenstand te stuiten, alle mannen, ook Chamor en Sichem. 26 Zij bevrijdden Dina uit het huis van Sichem en keerden naar hun kamp terug. 27 Daarna gingen al Jakobs zonen de stad in en plunderden haar, omdat hun zuster daar was onteerd. 28 Alles namen zij mee: het kleinvee, het rundvee en de ezels, alles wat los en vast zat, werd meegenomen, zowel uit de stad als van de velden. 29 Ook de vrouwen en kinderen werden gevangengenomen. Alle kostbaarheden in de huizen werden buitgemaakt.
30 Maar Jakob zei tegen Simeon en Levi: ‘Jullie hebben mij in een kwaad daglicht gebracht tegenover de andere bewoners van dit land, de Kanaänieten en de Perizzieten. Wij zijn met zo weinig, dat ze hierheen zullen komen en ons zullen verslaan. Ze zullen ons allemaal doden.’ 31 Maar zij zeiden: ‘We konden toch niet toelaten dat hij onze zuster als een hoer behandelde?’

34 (A)Dina, la figlia che Lea aveva partorita a Giacobbe, uscì per vedere le ragazze del paese. 2 Sichem, figlio di Camor l’Ivveo, principe del paese, la vide, la rapì e si unì a lei violentandola. 3 Poi egli rimase affezionato a Dina, figlia di Giacobbe; amò la giovane e parlò al cuore di lei. 4 E disse a Camor suo padre: «Dammi questa ragazza in moglie». 5 Or Giacobbe udì che quegli aveva disonorato sua figlia Dina; e siccome i suoi figli erano ai campi con il suo bestiame, Giacobbe tacque finché non furono tornati.
6 Intanto Camor, padre di Sichem, si recò da Giacobbe per parlargli. 7 I figli di Giacobbe, com’ebbero udito il fatto, tornarono dai campi; questi uomini furono addolorati e fortemente adirati perché costui aveva commesso un’infamia in[a] Israele, unendosi alla figlia di Giacobbe: cosa che non era da farsi. 8 Camor parlò loro, dicendo: «Mio figlio Sichem si è innamorato di vostra figlia; vi prego, dategliela per moglie 9 e imparentatevi con noi; dateci le vostre figlie e prendete per voi le figlie nostre. 10 Abiterete con noi e il paese sarà a vostra disposizione; fissate qui la vostra dimora, trafficate e acquistatevi delle proprietà».
11 Allora Sichem disse al padre e ai fratelli di Dina: «Possa io trovare grazia agli occhi vostri e vi darò quello che mi direte. 12 Imponetemi pure una gran dote e molti doni; io ve li darò come mi direte, ma datemi la ragazza in moglie». 13 I figli di Giacobbe risposero a Sichem e a suo padre Camor, ma parlarono loro con astuzia, perché quegli aveva disonorato Dina, loro sorella. 14 Dissero loro: «Questo non possiamo farlo; non possiamo dare nostra sorella a uno che non è circonciso; perché ciò sarebbe per noi un disonore. 15 Acconsentiremo alla vostra richiesta soltanto a questa condizione: se sarete come siamo noi, circoncidendo ogni maschio tra di voi. 16 Allora vi daremo le nostre figlie e noi ci prenderemo le figlie vostre, abiteremo con voi e diventeremo un solo popolo. 17 Ma se non volete ascoltarci e non volete farvi circoncidere, noi prenderemo la nostra figlia e ce ne andremo».
18 Le loro parole piacquero a Camor, e a Sichem, figlio di Camor. 19 Il giovane non indugiò a fare la cosa, perché amava la figlia di Giacobbe; egli era l’uomo più onorato in tutta la casa di suo padre.
20 Camor e suo figlio Sichem giunsero alla porta della loro città dicendo: 21 «Questa è gente pacifica in mezzo a noi. Rimanga pure nel paese e vi traffichi, perché esso è abbastanza ampio per loro. Noi prenderemo le loro figlie per mogli e daremo loro le nostre. 22 Ma questa gente acconsentirà ad abitare con noi per formare un solo popolo, a questa condizione: che ogni nostro maschio sia circonciso, come sono circoncisi loro. 23 I loro armenti, le loro ricchezze e tutto il loro bestiame non saranno forse nostri? Acconsentiamo alla loro richiesta ed essi abiteranno con noi».
24 Tutti quelli che erano venuti alla porta della città diedero ascolto a Camor e a suo figlio Sichem; ogni maschio si fece circoncidere, ognuno di quelli che erano venuti alla porta della città. 25 Ma il terzo giorno, mentre quelli erano sofferenti, due dei figli di Giacobbe, Simeone e Levi, fratelli di Dina, presero ciascuno la propria spada, assalirono la città che si riteneva sicura, e uccisero tutti i maschi. 26 Passarono a fil di spada anche Camor e suo figlio Sichem, presero Dina dalla casa di Sichem e uscirono. 27 I figli di Giacobbe si gettarono sugli uccisi e saccheggiarono la città, perché la loro sorella era stata disonorata; 28 presero le loro greggi, i loro armenti, i loro asini, quanto era nella città e nei campi. 29 Portarono via come bottino tutte le loro ricchezze, tutti i loro bambini, le loro mogli e tutto quello che si trovava nelle case.
30 Allora Giacobbe disse a Simeone e a Levi: «Voi mi causate grande angoscia, mettendomi in cattiva luce davanti agli abitanti del paese, ai Cananei e ai Ferezei. Io non ho che pochi uomini; essi si raduneranno contro di me, mi piomberanno addosso e sarò distrutto io con la mia casa». 31 Ed essi risposero: «Nostra sorella dovrebbe forse essere trattata come una prostituta?»

Dinah and the Shechemites
34 Now Dinah,(A) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem(B) son of Hamor(C) the Hivite,(D) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(E) 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah(F) daughter of Jacob;(G) he loved(H) the young woman and spoke tenderly(I) to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(J)
5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(K) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(L) 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(M) and furious,(N) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[a] Israel(O) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(P)
8 But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(Q) 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(R) 10 You can settle among us;(S) the land is open to you.(T) Live in it, trade[b] in it,(U) and acquire property in it.(V)”
11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(W) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(X) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”
13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(Y) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(Z) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(AA) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(AB) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(AC) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(AD) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(AE) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”
18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(AF) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(AG) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(AH) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(AI) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(AJ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(AK) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(AL) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(AM)”
24 All the men who went out of the city gate(AN) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(AO) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(AP) and Levi,(AQ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(AR) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(AS) killing every male.(AT) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(AU) and took Dinah(AV) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(AW) where[c] their sister had been defiled.(AX) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(AY) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(AZ) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(BA) taking as plunder(BB) everything in the houses.(BC)
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(BD) on me by making me obnoxious(BE) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(BF) We are few in number,(BG) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(BH)”

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

The Dinah Incident
34 Now (A)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he (B)took her and lay with her, and violated her. 3 His soul [a]was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke [b]kindly to the young woman. 4 So Shechem (C)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob (D)held[c] his peace until they came. 6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he (E)had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, (F)a thing which ought not to be done. 8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. 9 And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves. 10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who (M)went out of the gate of his city.
25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, (N)Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. 26 And they (O)killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. 28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field, 29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, (P)“You have (Q)troubled me (R)by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; (S)and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me.
