34 Dina, la hija de Lía y de Jacob, fue un día a visitar a las mujeres del pueblo. 2 Jamor, que era heveo, gobernaba ese territorio. Cuando su hijo Siquem vio a Dina, la tomó por la fuerza y la violó. 3 Sin embargo, se enamoró de ella y trató de ganarse su cariño, 4 así que le dijo a su padre que la pidiera para que fuera su esposa.
5 Jacob supo que Dina había sido violada, pero como sus hijos estaban cuidando el ganado, prefirió esperar a que regresaran. 6 Mientras tanto, Jamor fue a hablar con Jacob.
7 Tan pronto como los hijos de Jacob se enteraron de lo ocurrido, regresaron del campo muy enojados. Consideraban que violar a la hija de Jacob era una ofensa contra la familia, ¡algo que Siquem no debió haber hecho! 8 Sin embargo, Jamor les dijo:
—Mi hijo Siquem realmente quiere mucho a la muchacha. Yo les ruego que lo dejen casarse con ella. 9 Háganse parientes nuestros. Así nosotros nos casaremos con sus mujeres y ustedes podrán casarse con las nuestras, 10 y podrán también vivir libremente entre nosotros. Allí tienen el país: ¡vivan en él, vayan a donde quieran, compren terrenos!
11 Siquem, por su parte, les dijo a Jacob y a sus hijos:
—Si me consideran digno de casarme con Dina, les daré lo que me pidan. 12 Ustedes díganme cuánto quieren a cambio, y yo pagaré ese precio, ¡pero, por favor, déjenme casarme con ella!
13 Pero los hijos de Jacob no fueron sinceros con él ni con Jamor, 14 sino que los engañaron diciéndoles:
—Nosotros no podemos permitir que nuestra hermana se case con alguien que no está circuncidado. Eso, para nosotros, sería una vergüenza. 15 Sólo con una condición daremos nuestro permiso para la boda: que ustedes y todos sus hombres se circunciden. 16 Así, podrán casarse con nuestras mujeres, y nosotros, con las de ustedes. Entonces nos quedaremos a vivir aquí, y todos seremos un solo pueblo. 17 Claro que si no están de acuerdo, tomaremos a Dina y nos marcharemos.
18 Jamor y Siquem aceptaron la propuesta. 19-20 Y como Siquem era muy respetado entre sus familiares y estaba muy enamorado de Dina, él y su padre se fueron enseguida a hablar con las autoridades de su pueblo, 21 y les dijeron:
—Los hijos de Jacob son gente muy amistosa. Dejemos que vivan en nuestro territorio, y que hagan negocios aquí. Todavía hay mucho espacio en nuestra tierra para ellos. Así podremos casarnos con sus mujeres, y ellos, con las nuestras. 22 Pero sólo aceptarán vivir con nosotros si nuestros hombres se circuncidan. 23 ¡Dejemos que se queden a vivir aquí! ¡Así todos sus ganados y todas sus riquezas serán para nosotros!
24 Las autoridades estuvieron de acuerdo con Jamor y con Siquem, y todos los varones se circuncidaron. 25 Pero Simeón y Leví, hermanos de Dina, fueron al pueblo tres días después. Espada en mano atacaron por sorpresa a todos los hombres circuncidados y los mataron, pues ninguno pudo defenderse por los dolores que tenían. 26 Luego de matar a Jamor y a Siquem, sacaron a Dina de la casa. Antes de marcharse, 27-29 pisotearon los cadáveres y robaron todo lo que había en el pueblo. Se llevaron ovejas, vacas y burros, y todo lo que encontraron a su paso en el pueblo y en el campo. También entraron a las casas y las robaron, llevándose además todas sus riquezas, sus mujeres y sus niños. Así vengaron la violación de su hermana Dina.
30 Jacob reprendió a Simeón y a Leví:
—Con lo que han hecho, ustedes me han traído muchos problemas. Ahora los cananeos y los ferezeos no van a querer ni verme. Nosotros somos pocos, y si la gente de esta tierra se une contra nosotros, acabarán por matarnos a todos.
31 Pero ellos le respondieron:
—¡Pues Siquem no tenía por qué tratar a nuestra hermana como a una prostituta!

Dinah and the Shechemites
34 Now Dinah,(A) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem(B) son of Hamor(C) the Hivite,(D) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(E) 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah(F) daughter of Jacob;(G) he loved(H) the young woman and spoke tenderly(I) to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(J)
5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(K) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(L) 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(M) and furious,(N) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[a] Israel(O) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(P)
8 But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(Q) 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(R) 10 You can settle among us;(S) the land is open to you.(T) Live in it, trade[b] in it,(U) and acquire property in it.(V)”
11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(W) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(X) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”
13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(Y) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(Z) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(AA) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(AB) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(AC) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(AD) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(AE) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”
18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(AF) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(AG) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(AH) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(AI) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(AJ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(AK) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(AL) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(AM)”
24 All the men who went out of the city gate(AN) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(AO) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(AP) and Levi,(AQ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(AR) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(AS) killing every male.(AT) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(AU) and took Dinah(AV) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(AW) where[c] their sister had been defiled.(AX) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(AY) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(AZ) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(BA) taking as plunder(BB) everything in the houses.(BC)
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(BD) on me by making me obnoxious(BE) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(BF) We are few in number,(BG) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(BH)”

11 Şehem le-a mai spus tatălui şi fraţilor Dinei:
– Să găsesc bunăvoinţă la voi şi vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere. 12 Cereţi-mi o zestre şi un dar cât de mari vreţi, iar eu vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere; doar daţi-mi fata de soţie.
13 Fiii lui Iacov le-au răspuns cu viclenie lui Şehem şi tatălui său, Hamor, pentru că Şehem a necinstit-o pe sora lor, Dina, 14 zicând:
– Nu putem face acest lucru; nu putem s-o dăm pe sora noastră unui bărbat necircumcis, pentru că aceasta ar fi o ocară pentru noi. 15 Vom fi de acord doar dacă voi vă veţi face ca noi, adică doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre voi va fi circumcis. 16 Apoi vă vom da fiicele noastre şi le vom lua pentru noi pe fiicele voastre; vom locui împreună cu voi şi vom alcătui un singur popor. 17 Dar dacă nu ne veţi asculta ca să vă circumcideţi, ne vom lua fata şi vom pleca.
18 Lui Hamor şi lui Şehem, fiul acestuia, le-a plăcut cererea. 19 Tânărul, care era cel mai respectat în familia tatălui său, n-a întârziat să facă lucrul cerut, pentru că îi plăcea de fiica lui Iacov. 20 Astfel, Hamor şi fiul său, Şehem, au venit la poarta cetăţii lor şi le-au vorbit bărbaţilor din cetate astfel: 21 „Aceşti bărbaţi sunt paşnici cu noi; să locuiască în ţară şi să facă negoţ în ea, pentru că ţara este suficient de mare pentru ei; să ne luăm soţii dintre fiicele lor, iar noi să le dăm pe fiicele noastre, lor. 22 Ei vor să locuiască împreună cu noi şi să alcătuim un singur popor doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre noi va fi circumcis, aşa cum sunt şi ei. 23 Nu vor fi atunci vitele, bogăţiile şi toate animalele lor ale noastre? Deci să fim de acord şi să-i lăsăm să locuiască împreună cu noi.“ 24 Toţi cei care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au ascultat de Hamor şi de fiul său, Şehem, astfel că toţi bărbaţii care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au fost circumcişi.
25 A treia zi, pe când sufereau ei încă, doi dintre fiii lui Iacov, Simeon şi Levi, fraţii Dinei, şi-au luat săbiile, au atacat cetatea care se credea în siguranţă şi i-au ucis pe toţi bărbaţii. 26 Ei i-au ucis cu sabia pe Hamor şi pe fiul său, Şehem, au luat-o pe Dina din casa lui Şehem şi au plecat. 27 Fiii lui Iacov s-au năpustit asupra celor înjunghiaţi şi au jefuit cetatea, pentru că[c] o necinstiseră pe sora lor. 28 Le-au luat oile, vitele, măgarii şi tot ce era în cetate şi pe câmp. 29 Le-au luat ca pradă toată bogăţia, toţi copiii şi soţiile şi au jefuit tot ce era în case. 30 Atunci Iacov le-a zis lui Simeon şi lui Levi:
– M-aţi nenorocit făcându-mă urât canaaniţilor şi periziţilor, locuitorii ţării; eu am puţini oameni în subordine, iar ei se vor strânge împotriva mea şi mă vor omorî, astfel încât voi fi nimicit eu şi familia mea.
31 Dar ei i-au răspuns:
– Se cuvenea ca el să se poarte cu sora noastră ca şi cu o prostituată?
