18 After Jacob came from Paddan-aram, he arrived safely(A) at Shechem(B) in the land of Canaan and camped in front of the city. 19 He purchased a section of the field where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for 100 qesitahs.[a](C) 20 And he set up an altar there and called it “God, the God of Israel.”[b]

Jacob Buys Land in Shechem

18 After Jacob had arrived safely from Paddan-aram,[a] he entered the city of Shechem, which was located in the territory of Canaan, and encamped facing that city. 19 Then he bought a parcel of land for 100 pieces of silver from the descendants of Hamor, Shechem’s father. He pitched his tent there, 20 set up an altar, and named it El-elohe-israel.[b]
