32 (Maftir) (31:55) Early in the morning Lavan got up, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them. Then Lavan left and returned to his own place. 2 (1) Ya‘akov went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 3 (2) When Ya‘akov saw them, he said, “This is God’s camp,” and called that place Machanayim [two camps].

4 (3) Ya‘akov sent messengers ahead of him to ‘Esav his brother toward the land of Se‘ir, the country of Edom, 5 (4) with these instructions: “Here is what you are to say to my lord ‘Esav: ‘Your servant Ya‘akov says, “I have been living with Lavan and have stayed until now. 6 (5) I have cattle, donkeys and flocks, and male and female servants. I am sending to tell this news to my lord, in order to win your favor.” ’” 7 (6) The messengers returned to Ya‘akov saying, “We went to your brother ‘Esav, and he is coming to meet you; with him are four hundred men.”
8 (7) Ya‘akov became greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people, flocks, cattle and camels with him into two camps, 9 (8) saying, “If ‘Esav comes to the one camp and attacks it, at least the camp that is left will escape.” 10 (9) Then Ya‘akov said, “God of my father Avraham and God of my father Yitz’chak, Adonai, who told me, ‘Return to your country and your kinsmen, and I will do you good’: 11 (10) I’m not worthy of all the love and faithfulness you have shown your servant, since I crossed the Yarden with only my staff. But now I have become two camps. 12 (11) Please! Rescue me from my brother ‘Esav! I’m afraid of him, afraid he’ll come and attack me, without regard for mothers or children. 13 (12) You said, ‘I will certainly do you good and make your descendants as numerous as the grains of sand by the sea, which are so many they can’t be counted.’”
(ii) 14 (13) He stayed there that night; then he chose from among his possessions the following as a present for ‘Esav his brother: 15 (14) two hundred female goats and twenty males, two hundred female sheep and twenty males, 16 (15) thirty milk-camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten colts. 17 (16) He turned them over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Cross over in front of me, and keep a space between each drove and the next one.” 18 (17) He instructed the servant in front, “When ‘Esav my brother meets you and asks you, ‘Whose servant are you? Where are you going? And whose animals are these?’ 19 (18) then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Ya‘akov, and they are a present he has sent to my lord ‘Esav; and Ya‘akov himself is just behind us.’” 20 (19) He also instructed the second servant, and the third, and all that followed the droves, “When you encounter ‘Esav, you are to speak to him in the same way, 21 (20) and you are to add, ‘And there, just behind us, is your servant Ya‘akov.’” For he said, “I will appease him first with the present that goes ahead of me; then, after that, I will see him myself — and maybe he will be friendly toward me.” 22 (21) So the present crossed over ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
23 (22) He got up that night, took his two wives, his two slave-girls, and his eleven children, and forded the Yabok. 24 (23) He took them and sent them across the stream, then sent his possessions across; 25 (24) and Ya‘akov was left alone. Then some man wrestled with him until daybreak. 26 (25) When he saw that he did not defeat Ya‘akov, he struck Ya‘akov’s hip socket, so that his hip was dislocated while wrestling with him. 27 (26) The man said, “Let me go, because it’s daybreak.” But Ya‘akov replied, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.” 28 (27) The man asked, “What is your name?” and he answered, “Ya‘akov.” 29 (28) Then the man said, “From now on, you will no longer be called Ya‘akov, but Isra’el; because you have shown your strength to both God and men and have prevailed.” 30 (29) Ya‘akov asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he answered, “Why are you asking about my name?” and blessed him there.
(iii) 31 (30) Ya‘akov called the place P’ni-El [face of God], “Because I have seen God face to face, yet my life is spared.” 32 (31) As the sun rose upon him he went on past P’ni-El, limping at the hip. 33 (32) This is why, to this day, the people of Isra’el do not eat the thigh muscle that passes along the hip socket — because the man struck Ya‘akov’s hip at its socket.

32 (A)Awo Yakobo n’akwata ekkubo lye, bamalayika ba Katonda ne bamusisinkana. 2 (B)Yakobo bwe yabalaba n’agamba nti, “Lino ggye lya Katonda.” Ekifo ekyo n’alyoka akituuma Makanayimu.
3 (C)Awo Yakobo n’atuma ababaka eri Esawu muganda we, mu kitundu kya Seyiri[a] mu nsi ya Edomu. 4 N’abagamba nti, “Mugambe mukama wange Esawu nti, ‘Omuddu wo Yakobo abadde ne Labbaani okutuusa kaakano, 5 (D)alina ente, n’endogoyi, n’endiga era n’embuzi, abaweereza abakazi era n’abasajja. Kaakano aweerezza mukama we Esawu obubaka buno afune okusaasirwa mu maaso ge.’ ”
6 (E)Ababaka bwe baakomawo eri Yakobo ne bamugamba nti, “Twatuuka ewa muganda wo Esawu era ajja okukusisinkana ng’alina abasajja ebikumi bina.” 7 (F)Olwo Yakobo n’atandika okutiira ddala, n’asoberwa. N’ayawulamu abantu be yali nabo, n’ayawulamu n’endiga, ebisibo bye yalina ne mu ŋŋamira, ebibinja bibiri, 8 ng’alowooza nti, “Esawu bw’anaatuuka ku kibinja ekisooka n’akizikiriza, kale ekibinja ekisigaddewo kinadduka.”
9 (G)Awo Yakobo n’agamba nti, “Ayi Katonda wa jjajjange Ibulayimu, era Katonda wa kitange Isaaka, Ayi Mukama eyaŋŋamba nti, ‘Ddayo mu nsi yammwe, mu bantu bo, nange nnaakugaggawazanga,’ 10 (H)sisaanira wadde akatundu akatono ak’okwagala kwo okutaggwaawo, wadde obwesigwa bwonna bw’olaze omuddu wo. Kubanga nasomoka omugga guno Yoludaani nga nnina muggobuggo; naye kaakano nfuuse ebibinja bibiri. 11 (I)Nkusaba omponye mu mukono gwa muganda wange, Esawu, kubanga mmutya, talwa kujja n’atutta ffenna awamu n’abakazi n’abaana. 12 (J)Naye waŋŋamba nti, ‘Nnaakugaggawazanga, era abalikuvaamu baliba ng’omusenyu gw’ennyanja, ogutabalika obungi bwabwe.’ ”

13 (K)N’alyoka asula eyo ekiro ekyo, n’aggya ekirabo kya muganda we Esawu ku ebyo bye yalina: 14 embuzi enkazi ebikumi bibiri, embuzi ennume amakumi abiri, endiga enkazi ebikumi bibiri, endiga ennume amakumi abiri, 15 eŋŋamira enkazi amakumi asatu n’obwana bwazo, ente enkazi amakumi ana n’ennume kkumi, n’endogoyi enkazi amakumi abiri, n’endogoyi ennume kkumi. 16 N’azikwasa abaddu be, buli kisibo ng’akyawudde, n’agamba abaddu be nti, “Kale munkulemberemu, mulekeewo ebbanga wakati wa buli kisibo.”
17 N’alagira eyakulembera nti, “Esawu, muganda wange bw’anaakusisinkana n’akubuuza nti, ‘Oli muntu w’ani? Ogenda wa? Na bino by’olina by’ani?’ 18 (L)N’olyoka omuddamu nti, ‘Bya muddu wo Yakobo, birabo by’aweerezza mukama wange Esawu, era tali wala naffe.’ ” 19 Bw’atyo era n’alagira n’owokubiri n’owookusatu ne bonna abaagobereranga ebisibo nti, “Nammwe mwogere ebigambo bye bimu bwe musisinkana Esawu, 20 (M)era mugambe nti, ‘Omuddu wo Yakobo tali wala naffe.’ ” Kubanga Yakobo yalowooza nti, “Nnaamuwooyawooya n’ekirabo ekinkulembedde, n’oluvannyuma nnaalaba amaaso ge, osanga tankole kabi.” 21 Ekirabo kyekyava kimukulemberamu, ye n’asula mu kifo we yali ekiro ekyo.

22 (N)Mu kiro ekyo Yakobo n’agolokoka n’atwala bakazi be bombi, n’abaweereza be abakazi ababiri, n’abaana be ekkumi n’omu n’asomokera e Yaboki. 23 N’abatwala ne byonna bye yalina n’abasomosa omugga. 24 (O)Ye Yakobo n’asigala yekka, omusajja n’ameggana naye okutuusa obudde okukya. 25 (P)Omusajja bwe yalaba nga taasobole Yakobo, n’akoma ku kinywa ky’ekisambi kye. Yakobo n’atandika okuwenyera nga bw’ameggana n’omusajja. 26 (Q)Omusajja n’alyoka agamba Yakobo nti, “Ndeka ŋŋende kubanga obudde bugenda kukya.”
Naye Yakobo n’ayogera nti, “Sijja kukuta nga tompadde mukisa.” 27 Omusajja n’amubuuza nti, “Erinnya lyo gw’ani?” N’amuddamu nti, “Yakobo.”
28 (R)Awo n’amugamba nti, “Tokyaddayo kuyitibwa Yakobo. Wabula onooyitibwanga Isirayiri, kubanga omegganye ne Katonda, awamu n’abantu n’owangula.”
29 (S)Awo ne Yakobo n’amugamba nti, “Mbuulira erinnya lyo.” Naye ye n’amuddamu nti, “Lwaki ombuuza erinnya lyange?” Awo n’amuwa omukisa.
30 (T)Yakobo ekifo ekyo kyeyava akiyita Penieri, ng’agamba nti, “Kubanga ndabaganye ne Katonda, kyokka obulamu bwange ne busigalawo.”
31 Enjuba n’evaayo ne mwakako nga bw’asala Penieri, ng’awenyera olw’obuvune mu kisambi kye. 32 Abayisirayiri kyebava batalya kinywa ky’ekisambi na buli kati, kubanga ekyo omusajja wa Katonda kye yakomako.

Esau Comes to Meet Jacob
32 So Jacob went on his way, and (A)the angels of God met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s (B)camp.” And he called the name of that place [a]Mahanaim.
3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother (C)in the land of Seir, (D)the [b]country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, (E)“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. 5 (F)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that (G)I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”
6 Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and (H)he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” 7 So Jacob was greatly afraid and (I)distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. 8 And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [c]attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”
9 (J)Then Jacob said, (K)“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord (L)who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the (M)mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with (N)my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 (O)Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and [d]attack me and (P)the mother with the children. 12 For (Q)You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the (R)sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”
13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what [e]came to his hand as (S)a present for Esau his brother: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. 16 Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” 17 And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” 19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will (T)appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
Wrestling with God
22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, (U)and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them [f]over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and (V)a Man wrestled with him until the [g]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [h]touched the socket of his hip; and (W)the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And (X)He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”
But he said, (Y)“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Jacob.”
28 And He said, (Z)“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [i]Israel; for you have (AA)struggled with God and (AB)with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”
And He said, (AC)“Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He (AD)blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the name of the place [j]Peniel: “For (AE)I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over [k]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [l]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.
