Jakob is bang om Ezau weer te ontmoeten
32 Ook Jakob vertrok, in de andere richting. En engelen van God kwamen hem tegemoet. 2 Toen hij hen zag, zei hij: "Dit is een leger van God!" Daarom noemde hij die plek Mahanaïm (= 'twee legers').
3 Jakob stuurde boodschappers voor zich uit naar zijn broer Ezau. Ezau woonde in het gebied Seïr. Dat gebied wordt ook Edom genoemd.[a] 4 Hij zei tegen hen: "Zeg tegen Ezau: 'Dit zegt je dienaar Jakob: ik heb tot nu toe als vreemdeling bij Laban gewoond. 5 Ik heb er koeien, ezels, schapen en geiten, slaven en slavinnen gekregen. Ik laat je dit van tevoren weten en hoop dat je niet langer kwaad op me zal zijn.' "
6 De boodschappers kwamen bij Jakob terug en zeiden: "We zijn bij uw broer Ezau geweest. Hij is nu met 400 mannen op weg naar u toe." 7 Toen werd Jakob erg bang. Hij verdeelde de mensen die bij hem waren in twee groepen. Ook de schapen, geiten, koeien en kamelen verdeelde hij in twee groepen. 8 Want hij dacht: "Als Ezau op de ene groep afkomt en die verslaat, kan de andere groep ontsnappen." 9 Toen bad Jakob: "God van mijn grootvader Abraham en van mijn vader Izaäk! Heer, U heeft tegen mij gezegd: 'Ga terug naar je land en naar je familie. Ik zal goed voor je zijn.' 10 Ik ben het helemaal niet waard dat U zo goed voor mij bent geweest en mij zoveel heeft gegeven. Ik had op de heenweg alleen een staf toen ik de Jordaan overstak. Nu heb ik deze twee grote groepen mensen en dieren. 11 Heer, red mij nu alstublieft uit de handen van mijn broer Ezau. Want ik ben bang dat hij mij zal doden, met de moeders en de kinderen. 12 Maar U heeft toch gezegd: 'Ik zal goed voor je zijn en je familie zo ontelbaar maken als het zand langs de zee.' " 13 Die nacht bleef hij daar.
Toen nam hij van zijn vee een aantal dieren als geschenk voor zijn broer Ezau: 14 200 vrouwtjes-geiten en 20 mannetjes-geiten, 200 vrouwtjes-schapen en 20 mannetjes-schapen, 15 30 vrouwtjes-kamelen met hun jongen, 40 koeien en 10 stieren, 20 vrouwtjes-ezels en 10 jonge mannetjes-ezels. 16 Voor elke kudde wees hij een knecht aan die op die kudde moest passen. En hij zei tegen hen: "Ga voor mij uit en laat ruimte tussen de verschillende kudden." 17 Tegen de voorste knecht zei hij: "Als je mijn broer Ezau ontmoet en hij vraagt je: 'Wie is je heer en waar ga je naartoe? En van wie is dat vee dat voor je uit loopt?' 18 dan moet je zeggen: 'Dit is een geschenk van uw dienaar Jakob voor zijn heer Ezau. Hij komt zelf achter ons aan.' " 19 De tweede en de derde en alle andere knechten die achter de kudden aan liepen, moesten hetzelfde zeggen. 20 En ze moesten ook zeggen: "Uw dienaar Jakob komt achter ons aan." Want Jakob dacht: "Ik zal hem eerst een geschenk sturen. Daarmee vraag ik hem om vergeving. Pas daarna durf ik bij hem te komen. Misschien zal hij dan niet langer kwaad op me zijn." 21 Zo gingen zijn knechten met het geschenk voor hem uit. Maar zelf bleef hij die nacht in het tentenkamp.
Jakob worstelt met een man
22 's Nachts stond hij op en bracht zijn twee vrouwen, zijn twee slavinnen en zijn elf kinderen naar de overkant van de beek de Jabbok. 23 Daarna bracht hij zijn dieren en alles wat hij had naar de overkant. 24 Jakob was als enige nog aan de andere kant van de beek. En Iemand worstelde met hem tot het dag begon te worden. 25 Toen Hij merkte dat Hij Jakob niet kon overwinnen, sloeg Hij hem op zijn heupgewricht. Daardoor schoot het gewricht uit de kom tijdens de worsteling. 26 Toen zei Hij: "Laat Me gaan, want het wordt dag." Maar Jakob zei: "Ik laat U pas los als U mij zegent." 27 De Man vroeg: "Hoe heet je?" Hij antwoordde: "Jakob." 28 Toen zei de Man: "Je zal niet langer Jakob (= 'verdringer') heten, maar Israël (= 'worstelaar met God'). Want je hebt op een goede manier met God en met mensen geworsteld en je hebt gewonnen." 29 Toen vroeg Jakob: "Zeg mij alstublieft hoe U heet!" Maar de Man antwoordde: "Waarom vraag je hoe Ik heet?" En Hij zegende hem daar. 30 En Jakob noemde die plek Pniël (= 'gezicht van God'). "Want," zei hij, "ik heb oog in oog met God gestaan en toch ben ik in leven gebleven."
31 De zon kwam boven hem op toen hij bij Pniël overstak. Hij was kreupel aan één heup. 32 En tot op vandaag eten de Israëlieten de spier niet die op het heupgewricht ligt, omdat Hij Jakob op het heupgewricht, op de heupspier, heeft geslagen.

32 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.

32 야곱 또한 그곳을 떠나 길을 가는데 하나님의 천사들이 야곱에게 나타났다. 2 야곱이 하나님의 천사들을 보고 말하였다. “이곳이 바로 하나님께서 진치고 계신 곳이로구나.” 그래서 그 곳을 마하나임[a]이라고 불렀다.
3 야곱의 형 에서는 세일 땅 곧 에돔 땅에 살고 있었다. 야곱은 에서에게 자기보다 앞서 심부름꾼들을 보내며 4 이렇게 지시하였다. “너희는 내 주인 에서 형님에게 이렇게 말씀 드려라. ‘어르신의 종 야곱이 이렇게 아룁니다. 저는 라반에게 몸 붙여 살며 지금까지 쭉 그곳에 있었습니다. 5 제게는 소와 나귀와 양과 염소와 남종과 여종이 많습니다. 저의 주인 되신 형님께서 저를 너그럽게 보아 주시기를 바라며 이렇게 소식부터 전해 드립니다.’”
6 심부름꾼들이 야곱에게 돌아와서 이렇게 말하였다. “주인어른의 형님인 에서 어른께 다녀왔습니다. 그분은 지금 부하 사백 명을 거느리고 주인님을 향해 오고 계십디다.”
7 야곱은 몹시 두렵고 걱정이 되었다. 그래서 자기와 함께 있는 사람들을 두 무리로 나누었다. 그리고 양 떼와 소 떼와 낙타들도 두 무리로 나누었다. 8 그는 이렇게 생각하였다. “에서 형님이 와서 한 무리를 치면 남은 한 무리가 도망칠 수 있겠지.”
9 그런 다음 야곱이 기도하였다. “오 나의 할아버지 아브라함의 하나님, 나의 아버지 이삭의 하나님, 당신은 저에게 ‘네 고향과 네 친족에게 돌아가거라. 그리하면 네가 잘 되게 해 주겠다.’라고 말씀하신 주님이십니다. 10 주께서는 주의 종을 한결같이 사랑해 주시고 신실하게 돌보아 주셨습니다. 그러나 주의 종은 그럴만한 사람이 못 됩니다. 제가 요단 강을 건널 때 가진 것이라고는 지팡이 하나뿐이었습니다. 그러나 이제는 가진 것이 많아 두 무리로 나눌 정도가 되었습니다. 11 제발 에서 형님의 손에서 저를 구해 주십시오. 형님이 와서 저를 비롯하여 아내들과 그들에게 딸린 자식들을 칠까 두렵습니다. 12 그러나 주께서는 ‘내가 너를 잘 되게 해 주겠다. 네 자손을 바닷가의 모래알처럼 셀 수 없을 정도로 불어나게 해 주겠다.’라고 약속하셨습니다.”
13 야곱은 그날 밤을 거기에서 묵으면서 자기가 가진 것 가운데서 형 에서에게 줄 선물을 골랐다. 14 그가 고른 것은 암염소 이백 마리와 숫염소 스무 마리, 암양 이백 마리와 숫양 이백 마리, 15 낙타 서른 마리와 새끼들, 암소 마흔 마리와 황소 열 마리, 암나귀 스무 마리와 수나귀 열 마리였다. 16 야곱은 골라낸 가축들을 각기 떼로 나누어 종들에게 맡기며 이렇게 말하였다. “나보다 먼저 가거라. 그리고 가축 떼와 떼 사이를 조금씩 떼어 놓아라.” 17 야곱은 맨 앞에서 가축 떼를 몰고 갈 종에게 일렀다. “만약 에서 형님이 너를 만나 ‘네 주인은 누구냐? 너는 어디로 가는 길이며 이 짐승들은 누구의 것이냐?’하고 물으시거든 18 너는 이렇게 대답하여라. ‘이 짐승들은 어르신의 종 야곱의 것으로 에서 어르신께 드리는 선물입니다. 그분도 저희 뒤에 오고 있습니다.’”
19 야곱은 둘째 종과 셋째 종과 가축 떼를 따라가는 모든 종들에게도 똑같이 일렀다. “너희는 에서 형님을 만나거든 똑같이 말씀드려라. 20 반드시 ‘어르신의 종 야곱도 저희 뒤에 오고 있습니다.’라고 말씀드려라.” 야곱은 이렇게 생각하였다. “에서 형님에게 선물들을 앞서 보내면 형님의 마음도 누그러지겠지. 그러고 나서 형님을 만나면 아마 형님도 나를 받아 줄 것이다.” 21 그래서 야곱은 먼저 선물부터 보냈다. 그리고 야곱 자신은 그날 밤 진에 그대로 머물렀다.
22 그날 밤 야곱은 자리에서 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 열한 명의 아들을 데리고 얍복 강 나루를 건넜다. 23 그는 자기의 가족 모두를 강 건너로 보낸 다음 자기의 재산도 모두 강 건너로 보냈다.
하나님과의 씨름
24 그리하여 야곱이 혼자 남아 있는데 어떤 사람이 나타나 야곱을 붙잡고 날이 밝을 때까지 씨름을 하였다. 25 그 사람은 자기가 야곱을 이길 수 없다는 것을 알고서 야곱의 엉덩관절을 쳤다. 그 때문에 야곱이 그 사람과 씨름할 때에 엉덩관절이 어긋나게 되었다.
26 그런 다음 그 사람이 야곱에게 말하였다. “날이 새려고 하니 날 놓아다오.”
그러나 야곱은 이렇게 대답하였다. “제게 복을 빌어 주지 않으시면 놓아 드리지 않겠습니다.”
27 그 사람이 물었다. “네 이름이 무엇이냐?”
야곱이 대답하였다. “야곱입니다.”
28 그러자 그 사람이 말하였다. “이제부터는 네 이름은 야곱[b]이 아니라 이스라엘[c] 이다. 네가 하나님과 겨루어 이겼고 사람들과도 겨루어 이겼기 때문이다.”
29 야곱이 말하였다. “부디 어르신의 이름을 알려 주십시오.”
그러자 그 사람이 말하였다. “어찌하여 네가 내 이름을 묻느냐?” 그런 다음 그는 거기에서 야곱에게 복을 빌어 주었다.
30 그래서 야곱은 그 곳을 브니엘[d]이라고 부르며 이렇게 말하였다. “내가 여기에서 하나님의 얼굴을 직접 뵈었구나. 그런데도 아직 살아 있다니!”
31 야곱이 브니엘을 지나갈 때 해가 솟아올랐다. 그는 엉덩관절을 다쳐서 절뚝거리며 걸었다. 32 이런 까닭으로 오늘날까지도 이스라엘 사람들은 엉덩관절에 붙어 있는 힘줄을 먹지 않는다. 야곱이 그 힘줄 가까이에 있는 엉덩관절을 다쳤기 때문이다.
