30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,(A) she became jealous of her sister.(B) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”
2 Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,(C) who has kept you from having children?”(D)
3 Then she said, “Here is Bilhah,(E) my servant.(F) Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”(G)
4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.(H) Jacob slept with her,(I) 5 and she became pregnant and bore him a son. 6 Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(J) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(K) Because of this she named him Dan.[a](L)
7 Rachel’s servant Bilhah(M) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. 8 Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(N) So she named him Naphtali.[b](O)
9 When Leah(P) saw that she had stopped having children,(Q) she took her servant Zilpah(R) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(S) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(T) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[c] So she named him Gad.[d](U)
12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(V) happy.”(W) So she named him Asher.[e](X)
14 During wheat harvest,(Y) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(Z) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(AA) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”
“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(AB)
16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(AC) So he slept with her that night.
17 God listened to Leah,(AD) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(AE) So she named him Issachar.[f](AF)
19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(AG) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[g](AH)
21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(AI)
22 Then God remembered Rachel;(AJ) he listened to her(AK) and enabled her to conceive.(AL) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(AM) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(AN) 24 She named him Joseph,[h](AO) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(AP)
Jacob’s Flocks Increase
25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(AQ) so I can go back to my own homeland.(AR) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(AS) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”
27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AT) please stay. I have learned by divination(AU) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(AV) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(AW) and I will pay them.”
29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(AX) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(AY) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(AZ) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(BA)”
31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.
“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(BB) They will be my wages.(BC) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(BD) will be considered stolen.(BE)”
34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,(BF) and he placed them in the care of his sons.(BG) 36 Then he put a three-day journey(BH) between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(BI) and plane trees(BJ) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(BK) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(BL) in all the watering troughs,(BM) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(BN) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(BO) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(BP) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(BQ) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(BR) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(BS) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.(BT) 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.(BU)

30 Raquel, vendo que era estéril, teve inveja da irmã. “Dá-me filhos, se não morro”, disse a Jacob. 2 Este teve de lhe responder, contrariado: “Eu não estou no lugar de Deus. Só ele sabe porque te impediu de ter filhos!”
3 Então Raquel disse-lhe: “Toma a minha criada Bila. Os filhos que ela tiver serão meus.” 4 Deu-lhe pois Bila por mulher, 5 a qual ficou grávida e lhe deu um filho. 6 Raquel chamou-lhe Dan (fazer justiça), “Porque”, disse ela, “Deus fez-me justiça, ouvindo o meu pedido e dando-me um filho.” 7 Bila, criada de Raquel, tornou a conceber e a dar a Jacob outro filho. 8 Raquel deu-lhe o nome de Naftali (lutar): “Lutei com a minha irmã e ganhei!”
9 Entretanto, quando Leia se deu conta de que não engravidava como antes, resolveu dar também a sua criada Zilpa a Jacob. 10 E esta deu-lhe um filho. 11 E Leia exclamou: “Que sorte!” Por isso chamou-lhe Gad (sorte). 12 Zilpa tornou a dar-lhe outro filho; 13 Leia pôs-lhe o nome de Aser (feliz): “As outras mulheres vão considerar-me feliz, com certeza!”
14 Um dia, durante a colheita de trigo, Rúben achou no campo umas mandrágoras e trouxe-as a sua mãe, Leia. Raquel pediu-lhe que lhe desse algumas. 15 Mas Leia respondeu-lhe aborrecida: “Achas pouco teres ficado com o meu marido e ainda me pedes as mandrágoras do meu filho?”
Raquel propôs-lhe então: “Ele poderá ficar contigo esta noite se me deres as mandrágoras.”
16 Ao fim do dia, quando Jacob regressava do campo, Leia foi-lhe ao encontro: “Esta noite ficas comigo. Tenho esse direito em troco de uma quantas mandrágoras que o meu filho encontrou!” E assim foi. 17 Deus respondeu às orações de Leia, que ficou grávida de novo e deu à luz um quinto filho; 18 chamou-lhe Issacar (recompensar): “Deus quis recompensar-me pelo sacrifício que fiz, dando ao meu marido a minha criada!”
19 Depois disso, ficou ainda outra vez à espera de um filho, que foi o seu sexto. 20 Chamou-lhe Zebulão (grande consideração), pois exclamara ao ter este menino: “Deus deu-me um belo presente! Desta vez o meu marido ter-me-á em grande consideração, porque já lhe dei seis filhos!”
21 Passado um tempo teve uma filha a quem deu o nome de Dina.
22 Nessa altura, Deus quis responder a Raquel e permitiu que ficasse grávida. 23 Teve pois um filho: “Deus tirou a vergonha que pesava sobre a minha vida!”, disse. 24 E chamou-lhe José (acrescentar), porque fez esta oração: “Que o Senhor me dê outro filho!”
Os rebanhos de Jacob aumentam
25 Logo após o nascimento de José, Jacob disse a Labão: “Vou regressar a casa. 26 Deixa-me levar as minhas mulheres e os meus filhos, pelos quais trabalhei para ti, para que partamos todos. Sabes bem que te paguei largamente com o serviço que te prestei.”
27 “Não! Peço-te muito que não me deixes”, respondeu Labão. “Eu tenho verificado que o Senhor me tem abençoado assim tanto por amor a ti e por teres estado aqui comigo. 28 Diz-me quanto é que queres que te pague mais e dar-te-ei o que pretenderes.” 29 Jacob retorquiu: “Pudeste ver perfeitamente como te servi fielmente durante todos estes anos e como o teu gado cresceu pelos meus cuidados. 30 Porque o que tinhas antes era relativamente pouco em comparação com os rebanhos que agora tens. O Senhor tem te enriquecido muito através do meu trabalho. Quanto a mim, quando é que começo a trabalhar para a minha própria família?”
31 “Bom, pois diz então quanto queres.” E Jacob respondeu: “Não te peço nenhuma quantia exata como salário. Voltarei a trabalhar para ti, se estiveres de acordo com o que vou propor-te. 32 Passarei por entre os teus rebanhos hoje e porei de parte todas as cabras malhadas e todos os cordeiros de pelo escuro. Serão esses o meu salário. 33 E assim verás por ti próprio que se houver algum animal no meu rebanho que não tenha essas marcas é porque não me pertence.”
34 “Está bem. Seja assim como disseste.” 35 Nesse mesmo dia, Labão foi logo separar todos os bodes e cabras que tinham manchas ou listas e todos os cordeiros de pelo escuro e deu-os aos filhos dele, os seus netos. 36 E deixou três dias de caminho como intervalo entre si e os rebanhos de Jacob. Este continou a pastorear o resto dos rebanhos de Labão.
37 Jacob, contudo, pegou em ramos verdes de choupos, amendoeiras e plátanos e descascou-os de forma a deixá-los às riscas brancas. 38 Pôs esses ramos nos sítios onde o rebanho ia beber, de maneira que os animais os vissem, 39 porque era em geral nessa altura que concebiam; o que realmente aconteceu: as suas crias saíam malhadas e às riscas. E Jacob pô-las no seu rebanho. 40 Depois separou no rebanho de Labão as ovelhas dos cordeiros, e só as deixou conceber com os cordeiros de pelo escuro. Assim, foi fazendo aumentar o seu rebanho a partir do de seu sogro. 41 Além disso, quando eram os animais mais fortes que concebiam, tinha o cuidado de lhes pôr na frente os ramos às riscas. 42 Mas se eram ovelhas fracas, deixava-as à vontade. Dessa forma, as fracas eram de Labão e as fortes ficavam para si.
43 Assim, os rebanhos de Jacob cresceram rapidamente e ele tornou-se rico, possuidor, além disso, de camelos, jumentos e muita criadagem.

30 When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I will die!
2 And Jacob became very angry with Rachel and he said, Am I in God’s stead, Who has denied you children?
3 And she said, See here, take my maid Bilhah and have intercourse with her; and [when the baby comes] she shall deliver it upon my knees, that I by her may also have children.
4 And she gave him Bilhah her maid as a [secondary] wife, and Jacob had intercourse with her.
5 And Bilhah became pregnant and bore Jacob a son.
6 And Rachel said, God has judged and vindicated me, and has heard my plea and has given me a son; so she named him Dan [judged].
7 And Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
8 And Rachel said, With mighty wrestlings [in prayer to God] I have struggled with my sister and have prevailed; so she named him [this second son Bilhah bore] Naphtali [struggled].
9 When Leah saw that she had ceased to bear, she gave Zilpah her maid to Jacob as a [secondary] wife.
10 And Zilpah, Leah’s maid, bore Jacob a son.
11 Then Leah said, Victory and good fortune have come; and she named him Gad [fortune].
12 Zilpah, Leah’s maid, bore Jacob [her] second son.
13 And Leah said, I am happy, for women will call me blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied); and she named him Asher [happy].
14 Now Reuben went at the time of wheat harvest and found some mandrakes (love apples) in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray you, some of your son’s mandrakes.
15 But [Leah] answered, Is it not enough that you have taken my husband without your taking away my son’s [a]mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Jacob shall sleep with you tonight [in exchange] for your son’s mandrakes.
16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, You must sleep with me [tonight], for I have certainly paid your hire with my son’s mandrakes. So he slept with her that night.
17 And God heeded Leah’s [prayer], and she conceived and bore Jacob [her] fifth son.
18 Leah said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar [hired].
19 And Leah became pregnant again and bore Jacob [her] sixth son.
20 Then Leah said, God has endowed me with a good marriage gift [for my husband]; now will he dwell with me [and regard me as his wife in reality], because I have borne him six sons; and she named him Zebulun [dwelling].
21 Afterwards she bore a daughter and called her Dinah.
22 Then God remembered Rachel and answered her pleading and made it possible for her to have children.
23 And [now for the first time] she became pregnant and bore a son; and she said, God has taken away my reproach, disgrace, and humiliation.
24 And she called his name Joseph [may he add] and said, May the Lord add to me another son.
25 When Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my own place and country.
26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know the work which I have done for you.
27 And Laban said to him, If I have found favor in your sight, I pray you [do not go]; for I have learned by experience and from the omens in divination that the Lord has favored me with blessings on your account.
28 He said, State your salary and I will give it.
29 Jacob answered him, You know how I have served you, and how your possessions, your cattle and sheep and goats, have fared with me.
30 For you had little before I came, and it has increased and multiplied abundantly; and the Lord has favored you with blessings wherever I turned. But now, when shall I provide for my own house also?
31 [Laban] said, What shall I give you? And Jacob said, You shall not give me anything, if you will do this one thing for me [of which I am about to tell you], and I will again feed and take care of your flock.
32 Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted animal and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and such shall be my wages.
33 So later when the matter of my wages is brought before you, my fair dealing will be evident and answer for me. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the sheep, if found with me, shall be counted as stolen.
34 And Laban said, Good; let it be done as you say.
35 But that same day [Laban] removed the he-goats that were streaked and spotted and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white on it, and every black lamb, and put them in charge of his sons.
36 And he set [a distance of] three days’ journey between himself and Jacob; and Jacob was then left in care of the rest of Laban’s flock.
37 But Jacob took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane trees and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white in the rods.
38 Then he set the rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred and conceived when they came to drink,
39 The flocks bred and conceived in sight of the rods and brought forth lambs and kids streaked, speckled, and spotted.
40 Jacob separated the lambs, and [as he had done with the peeled rods] he also set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark in the [new] flock of Laban; and he put his own droves by themselves and did not let them breed with Laban’s flock.
41 And whenever the stronger animals were breeding, Jacob laid the rods in the watering troughs before the eyes of the flock, that they might breed and conceive among the rods.
42 But when the sheep and goats were feeble, he omitted putting the rods there; so the feebler animals were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s.
43 Thus the man increased and became exceedingly rich, and had many sheep and goats, and maidservants, menservants, camels, and donkeys.
