30 Toen Rachel merkte dat zij onvruchtbaar was, werd zij jaloers op Lea. ‘Geef mij kinderen, anders ga ik dood!’ riep zij tegen Jakob. 2 Maar toen werd Jakob boos. ‘Ben ik God soms?’ vroeg hij. ‘Hij is ervoor verantwoordelijk dat jij onvruchtbaar bent!’ 3 Toen zei Rachel tegen hem: ‘Slaap met mijn dienares Bilha, haar kinderen zullen de mijne zijn.’
4,5 Zo gaf Rachel hem Bilha als vrouw en hij sliep met haar, zodat zij zwanger werd en een zoon ter wereld bracht. 6 Rachel noemde hem Dan (Gerechtigheid) en zei: ‘God heeft mij recht gedaan. Hij hoorde mijn verzoek en heeft mij een zoon gegeven.’ 7 Toen werd Bilha, Rachels dienares, opnieuw zwanger en gaf Jakob een tweede zoon. 8 Rachel noemde hem Naftali (Mijn worsteling) en zei: ‘Ik ben in gevecht met mijn zuster en ik win!’
9 Ook voor Lea werd het duidelijk dat zij niet meer zwanger werd en zij gaf op haar beurt haar dienares Zilpa aan Jakob als vrouw 10 en die gaf hem een zoon. 11 Lea noemde het kind Gad (Mijn geluk is weer terug). 12,13 Daarna kreeg Zilpa een tweede zoon en Lea noemde hem Aser (Hij die gelukkig maakt) en zei: ‘Wat ben ik blij! Alle andere vrouwen zullen blij zijn vanwege mijn zegeningen!’
14 Op een dag, tijdens de tarweoogst, vond Ruben ergens op het veld liefdesappels en bracht ze naar zijn moeder Lea. Rachel vroeg Lea of zij ook wat liefdesappels mocht hebben. 15 Maar Lea antwoordde: ‘Was het niet genoeg dat je mijn man hebt afgepakt? Nu wil je zeker de liefdesappels van mijn zoon ook nog hebben!’ Rachel zei: ‘Nu zal hij vannacht met jou slapen, vanwege die liefdesappels.’
16 Die avond kwam Jakob thuis van het land en Lea ging hem tegemoet. ‘Je moet vannacht met mij slapen,’ zei ze, ‘want ik heb je eerlijk gehuurd voor de liefdesappels van mijn zoon.’ En Jakob sliep die nacht met haar. 17 God verhoorde Leaʼs gebeden en zij raakte weer in verwachting. 18 Zo kreeg zij haar vijfde zoon, die ze Issachar (Loon) noemde, want zij zei: ‘God heeft mij terugbetaald voor de dienares die ik aan mijn man heb gegeven.’ 19 Daarna raakte zij in verwachting van haar zesde zoon. 20 Zij noemde hem Zebulon (Bijwoning), want zij vond: ‘God heeft mij goede gaven gegeven voor mijn man. Hij zal nu zeker bij mij willen wonen, want ik heb hem al zes zonen gegeven.’ 21 Later kreeg Lea nog een dochter, die zij Dina noemde.
22 Toen besloot God naar Rachel te luisteren en Hij verhoorde haar gebeden. 23 Zij werd zwanger en kreeg een zoon. ‘God heeft de smaad van de onvruchtbaarheid van mij weggenomen!’ juichte zij. 24 En zij noemde haar zoon Jozef en zei: ‘Ik hoop dat de Here mij nog een zoon wil geven.’
25 Kort na Jozefs geboorte wendde Jakob zich tot Laban en zei: ‘Ik wil naar huis terug. 26 Laat mij mijn vrouwen en kinderen nemen—want ik heb ze eerlijk verdiend—en vertrekken, want u weet wat een werk ik voor u heb verzet.’ 27 ‘Ga toch niet weg,’ protesteerde Laban. ‘Alle zegeningen die ik heb gekregen, zijn veroorzaakt door jouw aanwezigheid hier. 28 Wat wil je hebben om te blijven? Zeg het maar, ik betaal het.’ 29 Jakob antwoordde: ‘U weet dat ik u trouw heb gediend in de afgelopen jaren en dat uw kudden flink zijn gegroeid. 30 Want toen ik hier kwam, was uw bezit niet zo groot, maar het is enorm gegroeid! De Here heeft u gezegend ter wille van mij. Dat is wel mooi, maar wat heb ik eraan? Ik moet ook een keer aan mijn eigen gezin denken.’ 31 ‘Wat wil je van mij hebben?’ vroeg Laban. 32 ‘Ik heb een voorstel. Als u het daarmee eens bent, zal ik bij u blijven,’ antwoordde Jakob. ‘Ik ga naar de kudden en haal overal de gevlekte, gespikkelde en gestreepte schapen en geiten weg. Dat zal mijn beloning zijn. 33 Als u morgen komt kijken en er zit een wit dier tussen, weet u dat ik dat heb gestolen.’ 34 ‘Goed,’ stemde Laban in. ‘Daarmee kan ik akkoord gaan.’
35 Nog diezelfde dag scheidde Laban de gestreepte en gevlekte bokken, de gespikkelde en gevlekte geiten, alles waar maar een wit plekje op zat en alle zwarte schapen van zijn eigen dieren en maakte zo een kudde voor Jakob. 36 Hij liet Jakobs zonen de kudde wegleiden tot op een afstand van drie dagreizen. Jakob bleef in de tussentijd de kudde van Laban hoeden. 37 Daarna verzamelde Jakob verse takken van populieren, amandelbomen en platanen en schilde ze zo, dat er witte strepen op kwamen. 38 Die geschilde takken verspreidde hij over de drinkplaats van zijn kudde, zodat de dieren bronstig werden en paarden. 39 De jongen die daaruit voortkwamen, waren gestreept en gevlekt en Jakob voegde ze bij zijn kudde. 40 Hij scheidde de ooien van Labans kudde van diens bokken en liet die paren met diens zwarte bokken. Zo bouwde hij zijn kudde op met behulp van Labans kudde. 41 Jakob ging zelfs nóg verder! Hij lette erop dat alleen de sterke en gezonde dieren met behulp van de geschilde takken paarden. 42 Bij de zwakkere dieren gebruikte hij de takken niet. Zo waren de zwakke jonge dieren voor Laban en de sterkere voor Jakob. 43 Dankzij die tactiek groeide Jakobs kudde snel en werd hij steeds rijker, met veel dienaren, kamelen en ezels.

30 When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she[a] became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children[b] or I’ll die!” 2 Jacob became furious[c] with Rachel and exclaimed, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”[d] 3 She replied, “Here is my servant Bilhah! Sleep with[e] her so that she can bear[f] children[g] for me[h] and I can have a family through her.”[i]
4 So Rachel[j] gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob slept with[k] her. 5 Bilhah became pregnant[l] and gave Jacob a son.[m] 6 Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me. He has responded to my prayer[n] and given me a son.” That is why[o] she named him Dan.[p]
7 Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, became pregnant again and gave Jacob another son.[q] 8 Then Rachel said, “I have fought a desperate struggle with my sister, but I have won.”[r] So she named him Naphtali.[s]
9 When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave[t] her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife. 10 Soon Leah’s servant Zilpah gave Jacob a son.[u] 11 Leah said, “How fortunate!”[v] So she named him Gad.[w]
12 Then Leah’s servant Zilpah gave Jacob another son.[x] 13 Leah said, “How happy I am,[y] for women[z] will call me happy!” So she named him Asher.[aa]
14 At the time[ab] of the wheat harvest Reuben went out and found some mandrake plants[ac] in a field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 But Leah replied,[ad] “Wasn’t it enough that you’ve taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes too?” “All right,”[ae] Rachel said, “he may go to bed with[af] you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep[ag] with me because I have paid for your services[ah] with my son’s mandrakes.” So he went to bed with[ai] her that night. 17 God paid attention[aj] to Leah; she became pregnant[ak] and gave Jacob a son for the fifth time.[al] 18 Then Leah said, “God has granted me a reward[am] because I gave my servant to my husband as a wife.”[an] So she named him Issachar.[ao]
19 Leah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a son for the sixth time.[ap] 20 Then Leah said, “God has given me a good gift. Now my husband will honor me because I have given him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[aq]
21 After that she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Then God took note of[ar] Rachel. He paid attention to her and enabled her to become pregnant.[as] 23 She became pregnant[at] and gave birth to a son. Then she said, “God has taken away my shame.”[au] 24 She named him Joseph,[av] saying, “May the Lord give me yet another son.”
The Flocks of Jacob
25 After Rachel had given birth to[aw] Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send[ax] me on my way so that I can go[ay] home to my own country.[az] 26 Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you.[ba] Then I’ll depart,[bb] because you know how hard I’ve worked for you.”[bc]
27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, please stay here,[bd] for I have learned by divination[be] that the Lord has blessed me on account of you.” 28 He added, “Just name your wages—I’ll pay whatever you want.”[bf]
29 “You know how I have worked for you,” Jacob replied,[bg] “and how well your livestock have fared under my care.[bh] 30 Indeed,[bi] you had little before I arrived,[bj] but now your possessions have increased many times over.[bk] The Lord has blessed you wherever I worked.[bl] But now, how long must it be before I do something for my own family too?”[bm]
31 So Laban asked,[bn] “What should I give you?” “You don’t need to give me a thing,”[bo] Jacob replied,[bp] “but if you agree to this one condition,[bq] I will continue to care for[br] your flocks and protect them: 32 Let me walk among[bs] all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb,[bt] and the spotted or speckled goats.[bu] These animals will be my wages.[bv] 33 My integrity will testify for me[bw] later on.[bx] When you come to verify that I’ve taken only the wages we agreed on,[by] if I have in my possession any goat that is not speckled or spotted or any sheep that is not dark-colored, it will be considered stolen.”[bz] 34 “Agreed!” said Laban, “It will be as you say.”[ca]
35 So that day Laban[cb] removed the male goats that were streaked or spotted, all the female goats that were speckled or spotted (all that had any white on them), and all the dark-colored lambs, and put them in the care[cc] of his sons. 36 Then he separated them from Jacob by a three-day journey,[cd] while[ce] Jacob was taking care of the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37 But Jacob took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees. He made white streaks by peeling them, making the white inner wood in the branches visible. 38 Then he set up the peeled branches in all the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. He set up the branches in front of the flocks when they were in heat and came to drink.[cf] 39 When the sheep mated[cg] in front of the branches, they[ch] gave birth to young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob removed these lambs, but he made the rest of the flock face[ci] the streaked and completely dark-colored animals in Laban’s flock. So he made separate flocks for himself and did not mix them with Laban’s flocks. 41 When the stronger females were in heat,[cj] Jacob would set up the branches in the troughs in front of the flock, so they would mate near the branches. 42 But if the animals were weaker, he did not set the branches there.[ck] So the weaker animals ended up belonging to Laban[cl] and the stronger animals to Jacob. 43 In this way Jacob[cm] became extremely prosperous. He owned[cn] large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys.

- Genesis 30:11 tc The statement in the Kethib (consonantal text) appears to mean literally “with good fortune,” if one takes the initial ב (bet) as a preposition indicating accompaniment. The Qere (marginal reading) means “good fortune has arrived.”

- Genesis 30:19 tn Heb “and she bore a sixth son for Jacob,” i.e., this was the sixth son that Leah had given Jacob.
- Genesis 30:20 sn The name Zebulun (זְבֻלוּן, zevulun) apparently means “honor.” The name plays on the verb used in the statement made earlier in the verse. The Hebrew verb translated “will honor” and the name Zebulun derive from the same root.
- Genesis 30:22 tn Heb “remembered.”
- Genesis 30:22 tn Heb “and God listened to her and opened up her womb.” Since “God” is the subject of the previous clause, the noun has been replaced by the pronoun “he” in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- Genesis 30:23 tn Or “conceived.”
- Genesis 30:23 tn Heb “my reproach.” A “reproach” is a cutting taunt or painful ridicule, but here it probably refers by metonymy to Rachel’s barren condition, which was considered shameful in this culture and was the reason why she was the object of taunting and ridicule.
- Genesis 30:24 sn The name Joseph (יוֹסֵף, yosef) means “may he add.” The name expresses Rachel’s desire to have an additional son. In Hebrew the name sounds like the verb (אָסַף, ʾasaf) translated “taken away” in the earlier statement made in v. 23. So the name, while reflecting Rachel’s hope, was also a reminder that God had removed her shame.
- Genesis 30:25 tn The perfect verbal form is translated as a past perfect because Rachel’s giving birth to Joseph preceded Jacob’s conversation with Laban.
- Genesis 30:25 tn The imperatival form here expresses a request.sn For Jacob to ask to leave would mean that seven more years had passed. Thus all Jacob’s children were born within the range of seven years of each other, with Joseph coming right at the end of the seven years.
- Genesis 30:25 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative with the prefixed conjunction indicates purpose or result.

- Genesis 30:38 sn He put the branches in front of the flocks…when they came to drink. It was generally believed that placing such “visual aids” before the animals as they were mating, it was possible to influence the appearance of their offspring. E. A. Speiser notes that “Jacob finds a way to outwit his father-in-law, through prenatal conditioning of the flock by visual aids—in conformance with universal folk beliefs” (Genesis [AB], 238). Nevertheless, in spite of Jacob’s efforts at animal husbandry, he still attributes the resulting success to God (see 31:5).
- Genesis 30:39 tn The Hebrew verb used here can mean “to be in heat” (see v. 38) or “to mate; to conceive; to become pregnant.” The latter nuance makes better sense in this verse, for the next clause describes them giving birth.
- Genesis 30:39 tn Heb “the sheep.” The noun has been replaced by the pronoun (“they”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- Genesis 30:40 tn Heb “and he set the faces of.”
- Genesis 30:41 tn Heb “and at every breeding-heat of the flock, the strong females.”
