Nagkasala ang Tao
3 Ang(A) ahas ang pinakatuso sa lahat ng hayop na nilikha ng Panginoong Yahweh. Isang araw tinanong nito ang babae, “Totoo bang sinabi ng Diyos na huwag kayong kakain ng anumang bungangkahoy sa halamanan?”
2 Sumagot ang babae, “Maaari naming kainin ang anumang bunga sa halamanan, 3 huwag lamang ang bunga ng puno na nasa gitna niyon. Sinabi ng Diyos na huwag naming kakainin ni hihipuin man ang bunga nito; kung kami raw ay kakain nito, mamamatay kami.”
4 Ngunit sinabi ng ahas, “Hindi totoo iyan, hindi kayo mamamatay! 5 Sinabi lang iyan ng Diyos, sapagkat alam niyang kung kakain kayo ng bunga niyon ay makakaunawa kayo. Kayo'y magiging parang Diyos at malalaman ninyo ang mabuti at masama.”
6 Ang punongkahoy ay napakaganda sa paningin ng babae at sa palagay niya'y masarap ang bunga nito. Naisip din niya na kahanga-hanga ang maging marunong, kaya't pumitas siya ng bunga at kumain nito. Binigyan niya ang kanyang asawa, at kumain din ito. 7 Nagkaroon nga sila ng pagkaunawa matapos kumain. Noon nila nalamang sila'y hubad, kaya kumuha sila ng mga dahon ng igos, pinagtahi-tahi nila ang mga ito at ginawang panakip sa katawan.
8 Nang dapit-hapon na, narinig nilang naglalakad sa halamanan ang Panginoong Yahweh, kaya't nagtago sila sa mga puno. 9 Ngunit tinawag niya ang lalaki at tinanong, “Saan ka naroon?”
10 “Natakot po ako nang marinig kong kayo'y nasa halamanan; nagtago po ako sapagkat ako'y hubad,” sagot ng lalaki.
11 Nagtanong muli ang Diyos, “Sinong maysabi sa iyong hubad ka? Bakit, kumain ka ba ng bungang ipinagbabawal ko?”
12 “Kasi, pinakain po ako ng babaing ibinigay ninyo sa akin,” tugon ng lalaki.
13 “Bakit(B) mo ginawa ang bagay na iyon?” tanong ng Panginoong Yahweh sa babae.
“Mangyari po'y nilinlang ako ng ahas, kaya ako natuksong kumain,” sagot naman nito.
Inihayag ng Diyos ang Kaparusahan
14 At sinabi ng Panginoong Yahweh sa ahas:
“Sa iyong ginawa'y may parusang dapat,
na ikaw lang sa lahat ng hayop ang magdaranas;
mula ngayon ikaw ay gagapang,
at ang pagkain mo'y alikabok lamang.
15 Kayo(C) ng babae'y aking pag-aawayin,
binhi mo't binhi niya'y lagi kong paglalabanin.
Ang binhi niya ang dudurog sa iyong ulo,
at sa sakong niya'y ikaw ang tutuklaw.”
16 Sa babae nama'y ito ang sinabi:
“Sa pagbubuntis mo'y hirap ang daranasin,
at sa panganganak sakit ay titiisin;
ang asawang lalaki'y iyong nanasain,
pasasakop ka sa kanya't siya mong susundin.”
17 Ito(D) naman ang sinabi ng Diyos kay Adan:
“Dahil nakinig ka sa iyong asawa,
nang iyong kainin ang ipinagbawal kong bunga;
dahil dito'y sinusumpa ko ang lupa,
sa hirap ng pagbubungkal, pagkain mo'y magmumula.
18 Mga damo at tinik ang iyong aanihin,
halaman sa gubat ang iyong kakainin;
19 sa pagod at pawis pagkain mo'y manggagaling
maghihirap ka hanggang sa malibing.
Dahil sa alabok, doon ka nanggaling,
sa lupang alabok ay babalik ka rin.”
20 Eva[a] ang itinawag ni Adan sa kanyang asawa, sapagkat siya ang ina ng sangkatauhan. 21 Ang mag-asawa'y iginawa niya ng mga damit na yari sa balat ng hayop.
Pinalayas sa Hardin si Adan at si Eva
22 Pagkatapos,(E) sinabi ng Panginoong Yahweh, “Katulad na natin ngayon ang tao, sapagkat alam na niya ang mabuti at masama. Baka pumitas siya at kumain ng bungangkahoy na nagbibigay-buhay at hindi na siya mamatay.” 23 Kaya, pinalayas niya sa halamanan ng Eden ang tao upang magbungkal ng lupang kanyang pinagmulan.
24 Pinalayas nga siya ng Diyos. At sa dakong silangan ng halamanan ng Eden ay naglagay ang Diyos ng bantay na kerubin. Naglagay rin siya ng espadang nagniningas na umiikot sa lahat ng panig upang hindi malapitan ninuman ang punongkahoy ng buhay.

Ang tukso at ang pagsuway ni Adam at ni Eva.
3 (A)Ang ahas nga ay lalong (B)tuso kay sa alin man sa mga hayop sa parang na nilikha ng Panginoong Dios. At sinabi niya sa babae, Tunay bang sinabi ng Dios, Huwag kayong kakain sa alin mang punong kahoy sa halamanan?
2 At sinabi ng babae sa ahas, Sa bunga ng mga punong kahoy sa halamanan ay makakakain kami:
3 (C)Datapuwa't sa bunga ng punong kahoy na nasa gitna ng halamanan ay sinabi ng Dios, Huwag kayong kakain niyaon, ni huwag ninyong hihipuin, baka kayo'y mamatay.
4 At sinabi ng ahas sa babae, Tunay na hindi kayo mamamatay:
5 Sapagka't talastas ng Dios na sa araw na kayo'y kumain niyaon ay madidilat nga ang inyong mga mata, at kayo'y magiging parang Dios, na nakakakilala ng mabuti at masama.
6 At nang makita ng babae, na ang bunga ng punong kahoy ay mabuting kanin, at nakalulugod sa mga mata, at kahoy na mananasa upang magpapantas sa tao, ay (D)pumitas siya ng bunga niyaon at kinain; at binigyan din niya ang kaniyang asawang kasama niya, at ito'y kumain.
7 (E)At nadilat kapuwa ang kanilang mga mata, at kanilang nakilalang sila'y mga hubad; at sila'y tumahi ng mga dahon ng puno ng igos, at kanilang ginawang panapi.
8 At narinig nila ang tinig ng Panginoong Dios na lumalakad sa halamanan sa kulimlim ng araw: at nagtago ang lalake at ang kaniyang asawa sa harapan ng Panginoong Dios sa pagitan ng mga punong kahoy sa halamanan.
9 At tinawag ng Panginoong Dios ang lalake at sa kaniya'y sinabi, Saan ka naroon?
10 At sinabi niya, Narinig ko ang iyong tinig sa halamanan, at ako'y natakot, sapagka't ako'y hubad; at ako'y nagtago.
11 At sinabi niya, Sinong nagsabi sa iyong ikaw ay hubad? nakakain ka ba ng bunga ng punong kahoy, na iniutos ko sa iyong huwag mong kanin?
12 At sinabi ng lalake, Ang babaing ibinigay mong aking kasamahin, ay siyang nagbigay sa akin ng bunga ng punong kahoy at aking kinain.
13 At sinabi ng Panginoong Dios sa babae, Ano itong iyong ginawa? At sinabi ng babae, Dinaya ako ng ahas, at ako'y kumain.
14 At sinabi ng Panginoong Dios sa ahas, Sapagka't ginawa mo ito, ay sumpain ka ng higit sa lahat ng hayop, at ng higit sa bawa't ganid sa parang; ang iyong tiyan ang ilalakad mo, (F)at alabok ang iyong kakanin sa lahat ng mga araw ng iyong buhay:
15 At papagaalitin ko ikaw at ang babae, at ang (G)iyong binhi at ang kaniyang binhi: (H)ito ang dudurog ng iyong ulo, at ikaw ang dudurog ng kaniyang sakong.
16 Sinabi niya sa babae, Pararamihin kong lubha ang iyong kalumbayan at ang iyong paglilihi; manganganak kang may kahirapan; at sa iyong asawa ay pahihinuhod ang iyong kalooban, (I)at siya'y papapanginoon sa iyo.
17 At kay Adam ay sinabi, Sapagka't iyong dininig ang tinig ng iyong asawa, at kumain ka ng bunga ng punong kahoy na aking iniutos sa iyo na (J)sinabi, Huwag kang kakain niyaon; (K)sumpain ang lupa dahil sa iyo; kakain ka sa kaniya sa (L)pamamagitan ng iyong pagpapagal sa lahat ng mga araw ng iyong buhay;
18 Ang isisibol niyaon sa iyo ay mga tinik at mga dawag; at kakain ka ng pananim sa parang;
19 Sa pawis ng iyong mukha ay kakain ka ng tinapay, hanggang sa ikaw ay mauwi sa lupa; sapagka't diyan ka kinuha: (M)sapagka't ikaw ay alabok (N)at sa alabok ka uuwi.
20 At tinawag na Eva ng lalake ang kaniyang asawa, sapagka't siya ang naging ina ng lahat ng mga nabubuhay.
21 At iginawa ng Panginoong Dios si Adam at ang kaniyang asawa ng mga kasuutang balat at sila'y dinamitan.
Pinalayas sila sa Eden.
22 At sinabi ng Panginoong Dios, Narito't ang tao'y naging parang isa sa atin, na nakakakilala ng mabuti at ng masama; at baka ngayo'y iunat ang kaniyang kamay (O)at pumitas naman ng bunga ng punong kahoy ng buhay, at kumain at mabuhay magpakailan man:
23 Kaya pinalayas siya ng Panginoong Dios sa halamanan ng Eden, upang kaniyang bukirin ang lupaing pinagkunan sa kaniya.
24 Ano pa't itinaboy ang lalake; at inilagay sa silanganan ng halamanan ng Eden ang mga (P)Querubin at ang isang nagniningas na tabak na umiikot, upang ingatan ang daang patungo sa kahoy ng buhay.

The Beginning of Sin
3 Now the ·snake [serpent] was the most ·clever [shrewd; cunning; crafty] of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day the snake said to the woman, “Did God really say that you must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden?”
2 The woman answered the snake [3:1], “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. 3 But God told us, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden [C the tree of the knowledge of good and evil]. You must not even touch it [C Eve was adding to the divine command], or you will die.’ ”
4 But the snake [3:1] said to the woman, “You will [L most certainly] not die. 5 [L For] God knows that if you eat ·the fruit from that tree [L from it], [L your eyes will be opened and] you will ·learn about [experience; L know about] good and evil and you will be like God!”
6 The woman saw that the tree was ·beautiful [L pleasing to the eyes], that its fruit was good ·to eat [L for food], and that it would make her wise. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of the fruit to her husband who was with her [C apparently he was present but silent while the woman spoke to the snake], and he ate it.
7 Then, ·it was as if their eyes [L the eyes of both of them] were opened. They ·realized [knew] they were naked, so they sewed fig leaves together and made ·something to cover [L loincloths for] themselves [Rom. 5:12–21].
8 Then they heard the [L sound of the] Lord God walking in the garden during the cool part of the day, and the man and his wife hid from the Lord God among the trees in the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said, “Where are you?”
10 The man answered, “I heard ·you walking in the garden [L your voice/sound], and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”
11 ·God [L He] asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man said, “You gave this woman to me and she gave me fruit from the tree, so I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “·How could you have done such a thing [What is this you have done]?”
She answered, “The snake ·tricked [deceived; 1 Tim. 2:14] me, so I ate the fruit.”
14 The Lord God said to the ·snake [serpent],
“Because you did this,
a curse will be put on you.
You will be cursed as no other animal, ·tame [beasts; livestock] or ·wild [L of the field], will ever be.
You will ·crawl [go] on your ·stomach [belly],
and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15 I will ·make you and the woman
enemies to each other [T place hostility/enmity between you and the woman].
Your ·descendants [L seed] and her ·descendants [L seed]
will be enemies.
·One of her descendants [L He] will crush your head,
and you will ·bite [strike; T bruise; L crush] his heel [Rom. 16:20; Rev. 12:9].”
16 Then God said to the woman,
“I will ·cause you to have much trouble [or increase your pain]
·when you are pregnant [in childbearing],
and when you give birth to children,
you will have great pain.
You will greatly desire [C the word implies a desire to control; 4:7] your husband,
but he will rule over you.”
17 Then God said to ·the man [or Adam; 1:27], “You listened to what your wife said, and you ate fruit from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat.
“·So I will put a curse on [Cursed is] the ground,
and you will have to ·work very hard [toil; labor] for your food.
In pain you will eat its food
all the days of your life.
18 The ground will produce thorns and ·weeds [thistles] for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 ·You will sweat and work hard for [L By the sweat of your brow you will eat] your food.
Later you will return to the ground,
because you were taken from it.
You are dust,
and ·when you die, you will return to the dust [T to dust you will return; 1 Cor. 15:21-22, 40–45].”
20 The man named his wife Eve [C the name derives from an early form of the verb “to live”], because she was the mother of all the living.
21 The Lord God made clothes from animal skins for ·the man [or Adam; 1:27] and his wife and dressed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Humans have become like one of us [C referring to the supernatural heavenly beings, God and the angels]; they know good and evil. We must keep them from [L putting forth their hand and taking and] eating some of the fruit from the tree of life, or they will live forever.” 23 So the Lord God ·forced [expelled] Adam out of the garden of Eden to ·work [till; or care for; 2:5] the ground from which he was taken. 24 After God ·forced [drove] humans out of the garden, he placed ·angels [L cherubim; C particularly powerful spiritual beings] and a sword of fire that flashed around in every direction on its eastern border. ·This kept people from getting […to guard the way] to the tree of life.

The Fall
3 Now the serpent(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(B)”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(C) 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(D)
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(E) 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(F) knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(G) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(H) who was with her, and he ate it.(I) 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(J) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(K)
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(L) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(M) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(N)
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(O) because I was naked;(P) so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(Q) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(R)”
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(S)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(T) and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed(U) are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust(V)
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a](W) and hers;(X)
he will crush[b] your head,(Y)
and you will strike his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.(Z)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.(AA)”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(AB)
“Cursed(AC) is the ground(AD) because of you;
through painful toil(AE) you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.(AF)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(AG) for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.(AH)
19 By the sweat of your brow(AI)
you will eat your food(AJ)
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”(AK)
20 Adam[c] named his wife Eve,[d](AL) because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.(AM) 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,(AN) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life(AO) and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden(AP) to work the ground(AQ) from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[e] of the Garden of Eden(AR) cherubim(AS) and a flaming sword(AT) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.(AU)
