蛇の誘惑
3 さて、主なる神が造ったものの中で、蛇が最も賢い動物でした。蛇は女に、ことば巧みに話を持ちかけました。「ほんとうにそのとおりなんですかね？ ほかでもない、園の果実はどれも食べてはいけないという話ですよ。神様は、これっぽっちも食べてはならないと言ったっていうじゃないですか。」
2-3 「そんなことないわ。食べるのは少しもかまわないのよ。ただね、園の中央にある木の実だけは、食べてはいけないの。そればかりか、さわってもいけないんですって。さもないと死んでしまうって、神様はおっしゃったわ。」
4 「ほおーっ。でも、それはうそっぱちですよ。死ぬだなんて、でたらめもいいところだ。 5 神様はわかっているんです。その実を食べたら、善と悪の見分けがついて神様のようになってしまうってことを。」
6 言われてみれば、そう思えないこともありません。それに、その実はとてもきれいで、おいしそうなのです。「あれを食べたら何でもよくわかるようになるんだわ。」女はそう思いながら見ていると、もう我慢できなくなり、とうとう実をもいで食べてしまいました。そばにいたアダムにも分け与えたので、彼もいっしょに食べました。 7 はっと気がつくと、なんと、二人とも裸ではありませんか。急に恥ずかしくなって、とっさにいちじくの葉をつなぎ合わせ、腰の回りを覆いました。
8 その日の夕方のことです。主なる神が園の中を歩いておられる気配がしたので、二人はあわてて木陰に隠れました。 9 神の呼ぶ声が聞こえます。「アダム、なぜ隠れるのだ。」
10 「あなたがおいでになるのに私は裸だったからです。こんな姿はお見せできません。」
11 「裸だということを、いったいだれが教えたのか。あれほど食べるなと言ったあの木から実を取って食べたのか。」
12 「は、はい。でも、あなたが私といっしょにしてくださったこの女がくれたので……。」
13 そこで神は女に尋ねました。「いったいどうして、こんなことをしたのだ。」
「蛇がいけないのです。私はただ、だまされただけです。」
14 それを聞いて、神は蛇に言いました。「おまえがそんなことをした罰だ。いいか、あらゆる家畜、野生の動物の中で、おまえだけがのろわれるようになる。生きている間中、ちりの中をはい回るがいい。 15 これからのち、おまえと女は敵対するようになる。おまえの子孫と女の子孫も同じだ。女はおまえを恐れるだろう。子孫同士も、互いに相手を敵視するようになる。おまえは彼（キリストを暗示する）のかかとにかみついて傷を負わせるが、彼に頭を踏み砕かれてしまうのだ。」
16 次に女に向かって、神は言いました。「あなたは苦しみ抜いて子どもを産む。それでもなお夫の愛を求めるが、彼はあなたを支配する。」
17 最後に神はアダムに言いました。「あれほど食べてはいけないと言ったのに、あなたはそれを食べたので、土地はのろわれたものとなった。あなたは生きるために、一生あくせく働かなければならない。 18 土地にはいばらとあざみが生え、あなたは野草を食べるようになる。 19 死ぬまで汗水流して土地を耕し、働いて糧を得、そしてついに死に、再び土に帰る。土から造られたのだから、また土に帰らなければならないのだ。」
20 アダムは妻をエバ〔「いのちを与える者」の意〕と呼びました。彼女が全人類の母となるからです。 21 神はアダムと妻エバに、動物の皮で作った服を着せました。 22 それからこう言われました。「人間は、われわれと同じように、善悪の区別がわかるようになってしまった。この先、『いのちの木』にも手を出し、永遠に生きることがないようにしなければならない。」
23 結局、主なる神は人間をエデンの園から永久に追放し、土地を耕させることに決めました。 24 こうして神は、人間を追放すると、エデンの園の東に炎の剣を置き、力ある天使とともにいのちの木への道を守らせました。

The Temptation and Fall of Man(A)
3 Now (B)the serpent was (C)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the (D)fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you (E)touch it, lest you die.’ ”
4 (F)Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman (G)saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit (H)and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, (I)and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.
8 And they heard (J)the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife (K)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, (L)and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
12 Then the man said, (M)“The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, (N)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (O)you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between (P)your seed and (Q)her Seed;
(R)He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
16 To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
(S)In pain you shall bring forth children;
(T)Your desire shall be [e]for your husband,
And he shall (U)rule over you.”
17 Then to Adam He said, (V)“Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree (W)of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
(X)“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
(Y)In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And (Z)you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 (AA)In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
(AB)For dust you are,
And (AC)to dust you shall return.”
20 And Adam called his wife’s name (AD)Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living.
21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden (AE)to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (AF)He drove out the man; and He placed (AG)cherubim (AH)at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of (AI)life.
