El hombre desobedece a Dios
3 Entre los animales salvajes que Dios creó, no había otro más astuto que la serpiente. Un día, la serpiente le dijo a la mujer:
—¿Así que Dios les dijo que no comieran de ningún árbol del jardín?
2 La mujer le contestó:
—¡Sí podemos comer de cualquier árbol del jardín! 3 Lo que Dios nos dijo fue: “En medio del jardín hay un árbol, que no deben ni tocarlo. Tampoco vayan a comer de su fruto, pues si lo hacen morirán”.
Pero la serpiente insistió:
4 —Eso es mentira. No morirán. 5 Dios bien sabe que, cuando ustedes coman del fruto de ese árbol, serán iguales a Dios y podrán conocer el bien y el mal.
6 La mujer se fijó en que el fruto del árbol sí se podía comer, y que sólo de verlo se antojaba y daban ganas de alcanzar sabiduría. Arrancó entonces uno de los frutos, y comió. Luego le dio a su esposo, que estaba allí con ella, y también él comió. 7 En ese mismo instante se dieron cuenta de lo que habían hecho y de que estaban desnudos. Entonces tomaron unas hojas de higuera y las cosieron para cubrirse con ellas.
8 Con el viento de la tarde, el hombre y su esposa oyeron que Dios iba y venía por el jardín, así que corrieron a esconderse de él entre los árboles. 9 Pero Dios llamó al hombre y le preguntó:
—¿Dónde estás?
10 Y el hombre le contestó:
—Oí tu voz en el jardín y tuve miedo, pues estoy desnudo. Por eso corrí a esconderme.
11 —¿Y cómo sabes que estás desnudo? —le preguntó Dios—. ¿Acaso comiste del fruto del árbol que te prohibí comer?
12 El hombre respondió:
—La mujer que tú me diste por compañera me dio del fruto del árbol. Por eso me lo comí.
13 Dios se dirigió entonces a la mujer, y le dijo:
—¿Qué es lo que has hecho?
Y la mujer le respondió:
—La serpiente me tendió una trampa. Por eso comí del fruto.
14 Entonces Dios le dijo a la serpiente:
«Por esto que has hecho,
maldita seas,
más que todo animal doméstico;
¡más que todo animal salvaje!
Mientras tengas vida,
te arrastrarás sobre tu vientre
y comerás el polvo de la tierra.
15 »Haré que tú y la mujer,
sean enemigas;
pondré enemistad
entre sus descendientes y los tuyos.
Un hijo suyo te aplastará la cabeza,
y tú le morderás el talón».
16 A la mujer le dijo:
«Cuando tengas tus hijos,
¡haré que los tengas con muchos dolores!
A pesar de todo,
desearás tener hijos con tu esposo,
y él será quien te domine».
17 Al hombre le dijo:
«Ahora por tu culpa
la tierra estará bajo maldición,
pues le hiciste caso a tu esposa
y comiste del árbol
del que te prohibí comer.
Por eso, mientras tengas vida,
te costará mucho trabajo
obtener de la tierra tu alimento.
18 Sólo te dará espinos que te hieran,
y la hierba del campo será tu alimento.
19 »Muy duro tendrás que trabajar
para conseguir tus alimentos.
Así será hasta el día en que mueras,
y vuelvas al polvo de la tierra,
del cual fuiste tomado.
Tú no eres más que polvo,
¡y al polvo tendrás que volver!»
20 Entonces el hombre le puso a su esposa el nombre de Eva,[a] porque ella sería la madre de todos los que iban a vivir en la tierra.
21 Luego Dios vistió al hombre y a su esposa con ropas de piel, 22 y dijo:
«Ahora el hombre y la mujer son como uno de nosotros, pues conocen el bien y el mal. Si llegaran a comer algún fruto del árbol de la vida, podrían vivir para siempre».
23 Por eso Dios los expulsó del jardín de Edén, y puso al hombre a cultivar la tierra de donde había sido formado. 24 Después de expulsar al hombre y a la mujer, Dios puso unos querubines al este del Edén, y también puso una espada encendida que giraba hacia todos lados, para impedir que alguien se acercara al árbol de la vida.

3 Now (B)the serpent was (C)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the (D)fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you (E)touch it, lest you die.’ ”
4 (F)Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman (G)saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit (H)and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, (I)and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.
8 And they heard (J)the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife (K)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, (L)and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
12 Then the man said, (M)“The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, (N)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (O)you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between (P)your seed and (Q)her Seed;
(R)He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
16 To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
(S)In pain you shall bring forth children;
(T)Your desire shall be [e]for your husband,
And he shall (U)rule over you.”
17 Then to Adam He said, (V)“Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree (W)of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
(X)“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
(Y)In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And (Z)you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 (AA)In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
(AB)For dust you are,
And (AC)to dust you shall return.”
20 And Adam called his wife’s name (AD)Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living.
21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden (AE)to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (AF)He drove out the man; and He placed (AG)cherubim (AH)at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of (AI)life.

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

The Fall
3 Now (A)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, (B)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 (C)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,[b] she took of its fruit (D)and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, (E)and he ate. 7 (F)Then the eyes of both were opened, (G)and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

and above all beasts of the field;

(N)he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
(O)in pain you shall bring forth children.
(P)Your desire shall be for[f] your husband,
and he shall (Q)rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
(R)of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
(S)cursed is the ground because of you;
(T)in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
(U)for you are dust,
and (V)to dust you shall return.”
20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.[g] 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, (W)“Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand (X)and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden (Y)to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the (Z)cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
