⁷ Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;^(A) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.^(B)

⁸ Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking^(C) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid^(D) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(E)

¹⁰ He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid^(F) because I was naked;^(G) so I hid.”

¹¹ And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?^(H) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?^(I)”

⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”^(A)

“I don’t know,^(B)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

¹⁰ The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.^{(C) 11} Now you are under a curse^(D) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
