Genesis 3:17-19

New International Version

¹⁷To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’^(A)

“Cursed^(B) is the ground^(C) because of you;
    through painful toil^(D) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.^(E)
¹⁸It will produce thorns and thistles^(F) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.^(G)
¹⁹By the sweat of your brow^(H)
    you will eat your food^(I)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”^(J)

Colossians 3:22-4:1

New International Version

²²Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. ²³Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, ²⁴since you know that you will receive an inheritance^(A) from the Lord as a reward.^(B) It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ²⁵Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.^(C)

4 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair,^(D) because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

The Greatest Commandment^(A)

²⁸One of the teachers of the law^(B) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

²⁹“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.^[a] ³⁰Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’^[b]^(C) ³¹The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’^[c]^(D) There is no commandment greater than these.”
