Genesis 3

New International Version

The Fall

3 Now the serpent^(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?^(B)”

²The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,^(C) ³but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”^(D)

⁴“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.^(E) ⁵“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,^(F) knowing good and evil.”

⁶When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable^(G) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,^(H) who was with her, and he ate it.^(I) ⁷Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;^(J) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.^(K)

⁸Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking^(L) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid^(M) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(N)

¹⁰He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid^(O) because I was naked;^(P) so I hid.”

¹¹And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?^(Q) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?^(R)”

¹²The man said, “The woman you put here with me^(S)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

¹³Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,^(T) and I ate.”

¹⁴So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed^(U) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust^(V)
    all the days of your life.
¹⁵And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring^[a]^(W) and hers;^(X)
he will crush^[b] your head,^(Y)
    and you will strike his heel.”

¹⁶To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.^(Z)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.^(AA)”

¹⁷To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’^(AB)

“Cursed^(AC) is the ground^(AD) because of you;
    through painful toil^(AE) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.^(AF)
¹⁸It will produce thorns and thistles^(AG) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.^(AH)
¹⁹By the sweat of your brow^(AI)
    you will eat your food^(AJ)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”^(AK)

²⁰Adam^[c] named his wife Eve,^[d]^(AL) because she would become the mother of all the living.

²¹The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.^(AM) ²²And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,^(AN) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life^(AO) and eat, and live forever.” ²³So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden^(AP) to work the ground^(AQ) from which he had been taken. ²⁴After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side^[e] of the Garden of Eden^(AR) cherubim^(AS) and a flaming sword^(AT) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.^(AU)

The Empty Tomb^(A)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene^(B) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.^(C) ²So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,^(D) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”^(E)

³So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.^(F) ⁴Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. ⁵He bent over and looked in^(G) at the strips of linen^(H) lying there but did not go in. ⁶Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, ⁷as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.^(I) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. ⁸Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,^(J) also went inside. He saw and believed. ⁹(They still did not understand from Scripture^(K) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)^(L) ¹⁰Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb^(M) ¹²and saw two angels in white,^(N) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

¹³They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”^(O)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”^(P) ¹⁴At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,^(Q) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.^(R)

¹⁵He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?^(S) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

¹⁶Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,^(T) “Rabboni!”^(U) (which means “Teacher”).

¹⁷Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers^(V) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father^(W) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

¹⁸Mary Magdalene^(X) went to the disciples^(Y) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

¹⁹On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,^(Z) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace^(AA) be with you!”^(AB) ²⁰After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.^(AC) The disciples were overjoyed^(AD) when they saw the Lord.

²¹Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!^(AE) As the Father has sent me,^(AF) I am sending you.”^(AG) ²²And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.^(AH) ²³If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”^(AI)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

²⁴Now Thomas^(AJ) (also known as Didymus^[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. ²⁵So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,^(AK) I will not believe.”^(AL)

²⁶A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace^(AM) be with you!”^(AN) ²⁷Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”^(AO)

²⁸Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;^(AP) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”^(AQ)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰Jesus performed many other signs^(AR) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.^(AS) ³¹But these are written that you may believe^[b]^(AT) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(AU) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(AV)
