The Children of Jacob

³¹ When the Lord ^(A)saw that Leah was ^[a]unloved, He ^(B)opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

^37 (A)He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

²¹ And the Lord ^(A)visited^[a] Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel ^(B)grew before the Lord.

⁵ But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, ^(A)although the Lord had closed her womb.

² Now there was a certain man from ^(A)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. ³ And the ^(B)Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.

Firstborn Inheritance Rights

¹⁵ “If a man has two wives, one loved ^(A)and the other unloved, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the unloved, and if the firstborn son is of her who is unloved,

⁷ And the Lord said: ^(A)“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry ^(B)because of their taskmasters, ^(C)for I know their ^[a]sorrows.

Jacob’s Children

30 Now when Rachel saw that ^(A)she bore Jacob no children, Rachel ^(B)envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, ^(C)or else I die!”

² And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, ^(D)“Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
