²⁰ So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,^(A) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.^(B)

²¹ Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.^(C)”

²² So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.^{(D) 23} But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah^(E) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. ²⁴ And Laban gave his servant Zilpah^(F) to his daughter as her attendant.^(G)

²⁵ When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?^(H) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?^(I)”

⁷ yet your father has cheated^(A) me by changing my wages^(B) ten times.^(C) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.^(D)

³² They took the ornate robe^(A) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

³³ He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal^(B) has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”^(C)

³⁴ Then Jacob tore his clothes,^(D) put on sackcloth^(E) and mourned for his son many days.^{(F) 35} All his sons and daughters came to comfort him,^(G) but he refused to be comforted.^(H) “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son^(I) in the grave.^(J)” So his father wept for him.

³⁶ Meanwhile, the Midianites^[a](K) sold Joseph^(L) in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.^(M)
