28 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughers of Laban thy mother's brother.
3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.
6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;
7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;
8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.
10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Jacob Sent to His Uncle Laban
28 Then Isaac called Jacob and (A)blessed him, and [a]charged him, and said to him: (B)“You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2 (C)Arise, go to (D)Padan Aram, to the house of (E)Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of (F)Laban your mother’s brother.
3 “May (G)God Almighty bless you,
And make you (H)fruitful and multiply you,
That you may be an assembly of peoples;
4 And give you (I)the blessing of Abraham,
To you and your descendants with you,
That you may inherit the land
(J)In[b] which you are a stranger,
Which God gave to Abraham.”
5 So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
Esau Marries Mahalath
6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram. 8 Also Esau saw (K)that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac. 9 So Esau went to Ishmael and (L)took (M)Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, (N)the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.
Jacob’s Vow at Bethel
10 Now Jacob (O)went out from Beersheba and went toward (P)Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12 Then he (Q)dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there (R)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13 (S)And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: (T)“I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; (U)the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14 Also your (V)descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad (W)to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and (X)in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, (Y)I am with you and will (Z)keep[c] you wherever you go, and will (AA)bring you back to this land; for (AB)I will not leave you (AC)until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in (AD)this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”
18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, (AE)set it up as a pillar, (AF)and poured oil on top of it. 19 And he called the name of (AG)that place [d]Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. 20 (AH)Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If (AI)God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me (AJ)bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21 so that (AK)I come back to my father’s house in peace, (AL)then the Lord shall be my God. 22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar (AM)shall be God’s house, (AN)and of all that You give me I will surely give a [e]tenth to You.”

28 Da ließ Isaak seinen Sohn Jakob zu sich kommen. Er segnete ihn und schärfte ihm ein: »Heirate niemals eine Einheimische, nimm dir keine Kanaaniterin zur Frau! 2 Es ist besser, du gehst nach Mesopotamien zur Familie deines Großvaters Betuël und heiratest eine Tochter deines Onkels Laban! 3 Der allmächtige Gott wird dich reich beschenken und dir so viele Nachkommen geben, dass von dir eine ganze Schar von Völkern abstammen wird. 4 Gott segnete Abraham; dieser Segen ging auf mich über, und jetzt gilt er dir und deinen Nachkommen: Ihr werdet das Land in Besitz nehmen, in dem du jetzt noch ein Fremder bist. Das hat Gott deinem Großvater Abraham versprochen!«
5 Mit diesen Worten verabschiedete Isaak seinen Sohn. So ging Jakob nach Mesopotamien zu Laban, dem Bruder seiner Mutter, der ein Sohn des Aramäers Betuël war.
6-7 Esau hörte davon; die Leute sagten ihm: »Dein Vater hat Jakob gesegnet und nach Mesopotamien geschickt, um dort eine Frau zu suchen. Jakob soll keine Kanaaniterin heiraten. Er hat auf seine Eltern gehört und ist zu seinem Onkel nach Mesopotamien gegangen.« 8 Da begriff Esau, dass sein Vater die Kanaaniterinnen als Ehefrauen ablehnte. 9 Darum ging er zu seinem Onkel Ismael und nahm sich zu seinen beiden Frauen noch eine dritte dazu. Sie hieß Mahalat und war die Tochter Ismaels, des Sohnes Abrahams, und die Schwester Nebajots.
Gott begegnet Jakob
10 Jakob verließ Beerscheba und machte sich auf den Weg nach Haran. 11 Als die Sonne unterging, blieb er an dem Ort, wo er gerade war, um zu übernachten. Unter seinen Kopf legte er einen der Steine, die dort herumlagen.
12 Während er schlief, hatte er einen Traum: Er sah eine Treppe, die auf der Erde stand und bis zum Himmel reichte. Engel Gottes stiegen hinauf und herab. 13 Oben auf der Treppe stand der Herr und sagte zu ihm: »Ich bin der Herr, der Gott Abrahams und Isaaks. Das Land, auf dem du liegst, werde ich dir und deinen Nachkommen geben! 14 Sie werden unzählbar sein wie der Staub auf der Erde, sich in diesem Land ausbreiten und alle Gebiete bevölkern. Und durch dich und deine Nachkommen sollen alle Völker der Erde am Segen teilhaben. 15 Du wirst sehen: Ich stehe dir bei! Ich behüte dich, wo du auch hingehst, und bringe dich heil wieder in dieses Land zurück. Niemals lasse ich dich im Stich; ich stehe zu meinem Versprechen, das ich dir gegeben habe.«
16-17 Jakob erwachte. Erschrocken blickte er um sich. »Tatsächlich – der Herr wohnt hier, und ich habe es nicht gewusst!«, rief er. »Wie furchterregend ist dieser Ort! Hier ist die Wohnstätte Gottes und das Tor zum Himmel!«
18 Am nächsten Morgen stand er früh auf. Er nahm den Stein, auf den er seinen Kopf gelegt hatte, stellte ihn als Gedenkstein auf und goss Öl darüber, um ihn Gott zu weihen. 19 Er nannte den Ort Bethel (»Haus Gottes«). Vorher hieß er Lus. 20 Dann legte Jakob ein Gelübde ab: »Wenn der Herr mir beisteht und mich auf dieser Reise beschützt, wenn er mir genug Nahrung und Kleidung gibt 21 und mich wieder heil zu meiner Familie zurückbringt, dann soll er mein Gott sein! 22 Hier an diesem Ort soll er verehrt und angebetet werden,[a] bei dem Stein, den ich als Erinnerung an seine Zusage aufgestellt habe. Und von allem, was Gott mir schenkt, will ich ihm den zehnten Teil zurückgeben!«

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(A) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(B) 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram,[a](C) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(D) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(E) 3 May God Almighty[b](F) bless(G) you and make you fruitful(H) and increase your numbers(I) until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(J) so that you may take possession of the land(K) where you now reside as a foreigner,(L) the land God gave to Abraham.” 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(M) and he went to Paddan Aram,(N) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(O) the brother of Rebekah,(P) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”(Q) 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women(R) were to his father Isaac;(S) 9 so he went to Ishmael(T) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth(U) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.(V)
Jacob’s Dream at Bethel
10 Jacob left Beersheba(W) and set out for Harran.(X) 11 When he reached a certain place,(Y) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(Z) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(AA) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(AB) 13 There above it[c] stood the Lord,(AC) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(AD) I will give you and your descendants the land(AE) on which you are lying.(AF) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(AG) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(AH) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[d](AI) 15 I am with you(AJ) and will watch over you(AK) wherever you go,(AL) and I will bring you back to this land.(AM) I will not leave you(AN) until I have done what I have promised you.(AO)”(AP)
16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(AQ) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(AR) This is none other than the house of God;(AS) this is the gate of heaven.”
18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(AT) and set it up as a pillar(AU) and poured oil on top of it.(AV) 19 He called that place Bethel,[e](AW) though the city used to be called Luz.(AX)
20 Then Jacob made a vow,(AY) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(AZ) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(BA) 21 so that I return safely(BB) to my father’s household,(BC) then the Lord[f] will be my God(BD) 22 and[g] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(BE) will be God’s house,(BF) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(BG)”
