Jakob bedriegt Isaak
27 Isaak werd op zijn oude dag half blind. Op een dag riep hij zijn oudste zoon Esau bij zich. ‘Mijn zoon,’ zei Isaak, 2-4 ‘ik ben al oud en elke dag kan mijn laatste zijn. Neem je boog en je pijlen en schiet een stuk wild voor mij. Maak het dan voor me klaar, zoals ik het graag lust en breng het hier, zodat ik ervan kan eten. Daarna zal ik je als mijn oudste zoon zegenen nog vóór ik sterf.’
5 Maar Rebekka had het gesprek afgeluisterd en toen Esau het veld inging, 6,7 riep zij Jakob en vertelde hem wat zijn vader tegen zijn broer had gezegd. 8-10 Rebekka gaf Jakob de raad: ‘Ga naar de kudde en breng twee jonge geiten hier. Dan zal ik het lievelingsgerecht van je vader klaarmaken. Jij moet hem dat brengen en als hij ervan heeft genoten, zal hij jou voor zijn dood zegenen in plaats van Esau!’ Maar Jakob protesteerde: ‘Maar moeder, vader laat zich heus niet zo gemakkelijk bedriegen. 11,12 Esau is behaard en ik heb een gladde huid. Stel dat vader zijn hand op mijn arm legt? Hij zal denken dat ik hem voor de gek wil houden en me vervloeken in plaats van zegenen!’ 13 Maar Rebekka stelde hem gerust. ‘Ik zal zijn vervloeking op mij nemen, jongen,’ zei zij. ‘Doe jij nu maar wat ik heb gezegd. Ga die geiten halen!’
14 Jakob deed wat zijn moeder hem had opgedragen en bracht haar de geiten, die zij klaarmaakte op de manier die Isaak het lekkerste vond. 15 Toen haalde ze Esauʼs beste kleren voor de dag—die lagen daar in huis—en liet Jakob die aantrekken. 16 Van de harige huid van de geiten maakte ze twee handschoenen en een reep van de huid bond ze om Jakobs gladde hals. 17 Toen gaf ze hem de schaal met het heerlijk ruikende vlees en wat versgebakken brood. 18 Jakob ging de tent in waar zijn vader lag en antwoordde op Isaaks vraag, wie daar was: 19 ‘Ik ben Esau, uw oudste zoon. Ik heb gedaan wat u mij hebt gevraagd. Hier is het gerecht dat u graag wilde hebben. Ga even rechtop zitten en eet het, zodat u mij kunt zegenen.’ 20 En Isaak vroeg: ‘Hoe heb je dat zo snel voor elkaar gekregen, jongen?’ Jakob antwoordde daarop: ‘De Here, uw God heeft mij geholpen!’ 21-23 Isaak liet Jakob bij zich komen en betastte hem. ‘De stem is van Jakob, maar de handen zijn van Esau,’ zei hij bij zichzelf. 24 Nogmaals vroeg Isaak hem of hij werkelijk Esau was, waarop Jakob weer bevestigend antwoordde. 25 Toen was Isaak overtuigd en hij at van het gerecht en dronk de wijn, die Jakob ook had meegebracht. 26 ‘Kom hier en kus me, mijn zoon,’ vroeg Isaak na het eten. 27 Jakob kuste hem en Isaak rook de geur van zijn kleren en was toen helemaal overtuigd. En hij gaf Jakob zijn zegen met de woorden: ‘De geur van mijn zoon is de goede geur van de aarde en het open veld, dat de Here heeft gezegend. 28 Moge God je altijd genoeg regen voor je oogst, voor je koren en voor je wijnranken geven. 29 Vele volken zullen zich aan je onderwerpen. Heers over je broeders. Je broers zullen voor je buigen. Vervloekt zijn zij die jou vervloeken en gezegend zijn zij die jou zegenen.’
30 Na die zegen, toen Jakob nog maar net de tent van zijn vader had verlaten, kwam Esau terug van de jacht. 31 Hij maakte zijn vaders lievelingsgerecht klaar en ging ermee naar de tent. 32 Maar toen hij binnenkwam en zijn vader het eten aanbood, vroeg die bevreemd: ‘Wie is daar?’ Esau zei dat hij het was en Isaak schrok zichtbaar. 33 ‘Maar wie is hier dan net geweest met wildbraad, waarvan ik heb gegeten?’ vroeg hij zich verontrust af. 34 Esau begon te klagen: ‘Och, vader, zegen mij, zegen mij ook!’ 35 Maar Isaaks antwoord was onverbiddelijk. ‘Je broer was hier en heeft mij bedrogen. Hij heeft jouw zegen weggenomen.’ 36 Esau reageerde verbitterd. ‘Geen wonder dat ze hem de Bedrieger noemen. Eerst nam hij mij mijn eerstgeboorterecht af en nu heeft hij mijn zegen ook nog gestolen. Och, hebt u geen enkele zegen meer over voor mij?’ smeekte hij zijn vader. 37 Maar Isaak moest hem teleurstellen. ‘Ik heb hem meester over jou gemaakt en hem jou en alle andere familieleden als dienaren gegeven. Ik heb hem veel koren en wijn beloofd. Wat kan ik jou nog geven?’ 38 Maar Esau bleef vragen: ‘Och, vader, heeft u dan geen enkele zegen meer voor mij?’ en begon te huilen. 39,40 Toen zei Isaak echter: ‘Je zult geen gemakkelijk leven krijgen. Je zult van je zwaard leven. Een tijdlang zul je je broer dienen, maar als je je best doet, zul je je van hem kunnen losmaken en vrij zijn.’
41 Esau haatte Jakob om wat hij had gedaan en dacht bij zichzelf: ‘Vader zal wel snel sterven en dan kan ik Jakob doden.’ 42 Maar iemand kreeg lucht van zijn plan en vertelde het Rebekka. 43 Zij riep Jakob bij zich en vertelde hem dat zijn broer het op zijn leven had voorzien. ‘Je moet naar je oom Laban in Haran vluchten,’ zei zij. 44 ‘Blijf daar tot je broer van gedachten is veranderd en je daad heeft vergeten. 45 Dan zal ik iemand naar je toe sturen. Waarom zou ik jullie allebei op één dag moeten kwijtraken?’ 46 Tegen Isaak zei Rebekka: ‘Ik heb een hartgrondige afkeer van die Hethitische vrouwen van Esau. Ik sterf nog liever dan dat ik Jakob met een van hen laat trouwen.’

Living Bible
27 One day, in Isaac’s old age when he was almost blind, he called for Esau his oldest son.
Isaac: “My son?”
Esau: “Yes, Father?”
2-4 Isaac: “I am an old man now, and expect every day to be my last. Take your bow and arrows out into the fields and get me some venison, and prepare it just the way I like it—savory and good—and bring it here for me to eat, and I will give you the blessings that belong to you, my firstborn son,[a] before I die.”
5 But Rebekah overheard the conversation. So when Esau left for the field to hunt for the venison, 6-7 she called her son Jacob and told him what his father had said to his brother.
8-10 Rebekah: “Now do exactly as I tell you. Go out to the flocks and bring me two young goats, and I’ll prepare your father’s favorite dish from them. Then take it to your father, and after he has enjoyed it he will bless you before his death, instead of Esau!”[b]
11-12 Jacob: “But Mother! He won’t be fooled that easily.[c] Think how hairy Esau is, and how smooth my skin is! What if my father feels me? He’ll think I’m making a fool of him and curse me instead of blessing me!”
13 Rebekah: “Let his curses be on me, dear son. Just do what I tell you. Go out and get the goats.”
14 So Jacob followed his mother’s instructions, bringing the dressed kids, which she prepared in his father’s favorite way. 15 Then she took Esau’s best clothes—they were there in the house—and instructed Jacob to put them on. 16 And she made him a pair of gloves from the hairy skin of the young goats, and fastened a strip of the hide around his neck; 17 then she gave him the meat, with its rich aroma, and some fresh-baked bread.
18 Jacob carried the platter of food into the room where his father was lying.
Jacob: “Father?”
Isaac: “Yes? Who is it, my son—Esau or Jacob?”
19 Jacob: “It’s Esau, your oldest son. I’ve done as you told me to. Here is the delicious venison you wanted. Sit up and eat it, so that you will bless me with all your heart!”
20 Isaac: “How were you able to find it so quickly, my son?”
Jacob: “Because Jehovah your God put it in my path!”
21 Isaac: “Come over here. I want to feel you and be sure it really is Esau!”
22 (Jacob goes over to his father. He feels him!)
Isaac: (to himself) “The voice is Jacob’s, but the hands are Esau’s!”
23 (The ruse convinces Isaac and he gives Jacob his blessings):
24 Isaac: “Are you really Esau?”
Jacob: “Yes, of course.”
25 Isaac: “Then bring me the venison, and I will eat it and bless you with all my heart.”
(Jacob takes it over to him and Isaac eats; he also drinks the wine Jacob brings him.)
26 Isaac: “Come here and kiss me, my son!”
(Jacob goes over and kisses him on the cheek. Isaac sniffs his clothes, and finally seems convinced.)
27-29 Isaac: “The smell of my son is the good smell of the earth and fields that Jehovah has blessed. May God always give you plenty of rain for your crops, and good harvests and grapes. May many nations be your slaves. Be the master of your brothers. May all your relatives bow low before you. Cursed are all who curse you, and blessed are all who bless you.”
30 (As soon as Isaac has blessed Jacob, and almost before Jacob leaves the room, Esau arrives, coming in from his hunting. 31 He also has prepared his father’s favorite dish and brings it to him.)
Esau: “Here I am, Father, with the venison. Sit up and eat it so that you can give me your finest blessings!”
32 Isaac: “Who is it?”
Esau: “Why, it’s me, of course! Esau, your oldest son!”
33 (Isaac begins to tremble noticeably.)
Isaac: “Then who is it who was just here with venison, and I have already eaten it and blessed him with irrevocable blessing?”
34 (Esau begins to sob with deep and bitter sobs.)
Esau: “O my Father, bless me, bless me too!”
35 Isaac: “Your brother was here and tricked me and has carried away your blessing.”
36 Esau: (bitterly) “No wonder they call him ‘The Cheater.’[d] For he took my birthright, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven’t you saved even one blessing for me?”
37 Isaac: “I have made him your master, and have given him yourself and all of his relatives as his servants. I have guaranteed him abundance of grain and wine—what is there left to give?”
38 Esau: “Not one blessing left for me? O my Father, bless me too.”
(Isaac says nothing[e] as Esau weeps.)
39-40 Isaac: “Yours will be no life of ease and luxury, but you shall hew your way with your sword. For a time you will serve your brother, but you will finally shake loose from him and be free.”
41 So Esau hated Jacob because of what he had done to him. He said to himself, “My father will soon be gone, and then I will kill Jacob.” 42 But someone got wind of what he was planning and reported it to Rebekah. She sent for Jacob and told him that his life was being threatened by Esau.
43 “This is what to do,” she said. “Flee to your Uncle Laban in Haran. 44 Stay there with him awhile until your brother’s fury is spent, 45 and he forgets what you have done. Then I will send for you. For why should I be bereaved of both of you in one day?”
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m sick and tired of these local girls. I’d rather die than see Jacob marry one of them.”

27 Now it came to pass, when Isaac was (A)old and (B)his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”
And he answered him, “Here I am.”
2 Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I (C)do not know the day of my death. 3 (D)Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. 4 And make me [a]savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul (E)may bless you before I die.”
5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it. 6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 ‘Bring me game and make [b]savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, (F)obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make (G)savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he (H)may bless you before his death.”
11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, (I)Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man. 12 Perhaps my father will (J)feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring (K)a curse on myself and not a blessing.”
13 But his mother said to him, (L)“Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” 14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother (M)made [c]savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took (N)the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 So he went to his father and said, “My father.”
And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, (O)that your soul may bless me.”
20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?”
And he said, “Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”
21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I (P)may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because (Q)his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
24 Then he said, “Are you really my son Esau?”
He said, “I am.”
25 He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so (R)that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” 27 And he came near and (S)kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:
“Surely, (T)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field
Which the Lord has blessed.
28 Therefore may (U)God give you
Of (V)the dew of heaven,
Of (W)the fatness of the earth,
And (X)plenty of grain and wine.
29 (Y)Let peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you.
Be master over your brethren,
And (Z)let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(AA)Cursed be everyone who curses you,
And blessed be those who bless you!”
Esau’s Lost Hope(AB)
30 Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also had made [d]savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise and (AC)eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.”
32 And his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”
So he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him—(AD)and indeed he shall be blessed.”
34 When Esau heard the words of his father, (AE)he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me—me also, O my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”
36 And Esau said, (AF)“Is he not rightly named [e]Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
37 Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, (AG)“Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with (AH)grain and wine I have [f]sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?”
38 And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me—me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice (AI)and wept.
39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:
“Behold, (AJ)your dwelling shall be of the [g]fatness of the earth,
And of the dew of heaven from above.
40 By your sword you shall live,
And (AK)you shall serve your brother;
And (AL)it shall come to pass, when you become restless,
That you shall break his yoke from your neck.”
Jacob Escapes from Esau
41 So Esau (AM)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, (AN)“The days of mourning for my father [h]are at hand; (AO)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Surely your brother Esau (AP)comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban (AQ)in Haran. 44 And stay with him a (AR)few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, (AS)“I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; (AT)if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
