26 There was a famine in the land, in addition to the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar. 2 Yahweh appeared to him, and said, “Don’t go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about. 3 Live in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For I will give to you, and to your offspring, all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and will give all these lands to your offspring. In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my requirements, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
6 Isaac lived in Gerar. 7 The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “My wife”, lest, he thought, “the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at.” 8 When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife. 9 Abimelech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’”
10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!”
11 Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death.”
12 Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him. 13 The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great. 14 He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him. 15 Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth. 16 Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”
17 Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.
18 Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of flowing[a] water. 20 The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek,[b] because they contended with him. 21 They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. So he called its name Sitnah.[c] 22 He left that place, and dug another well. They didn’t argue over that one. So he called it Rehoboth.[d] He said, “For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
23 He went up from there to Beersheba. 24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake.”
25 He built an altar there, and called on Yahweh’s name, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac’s servants dug a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?”
28 They said, “We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let’s make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.’ You are now the blessed of Yahweh.”
30 He made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 They rose up some time in the morning, and swore an oath to one another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 The same day, Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 He called it “Shibah”.[e] Therefore the name of the city is “Beersheba”[f] to this day.
34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 They grieved Isaac’s and Rebekah’s spirits.

26 Lúc đó trong xứ có cơn đói kém ngoài cơn đói kém xảy ra trong đời Áp-ra-ham. Cho nên Y-sác đi xuống thành Ghê-ra thăm A-bi-mê-léc vua dân Phi-li-tin. 2 CHÚA hiện ra cùng Y-sác bảo rằng, “Đừng đi xuống Ai-cập nhưng hãy sống trong xứ ta bảo con. 3 Hãy ở trong xứ nầy, ta sẽ ở cùng và ban phước cho con. Ta sẽ cho con và dòng dõi con đất nầy. Ta sẽ giữ lời thề ta lập cùng Áp-ra-ham, cha con. 4 Ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi con đông như sao trên trời không ai đếm được, và ta sẽ ban cho chúng nó đất nầy. Nhờ dòng dõi con mà các dân trên đất sẽ được phước. 5 Ta sẽ thực hiện mọi điều đó, vì cha con là Áp-ra-ham đã vâng lời ta. Người đã làm theo điều ta bảo, vâng theo mệnh lệnh cùng lời giáo huấn và giữ luật lệ ta.”
6 Vậy Y-sác cư ngụ tại Ghê-ra. 7 Rê-be-ca, vợ Y-sác rất đẹp cho nên các người đàn ông ở đó trầm trồ với Y-sác về nàng. Y-sác bảo, “Cô đó là em gái tôi.” Ông sợ không dám nói nàng là vợ mình, vì ngại rằng họ sẽ giết mình để đoạt nàng.
8 Y-sác sống ở vùng đó khá lâu. Một ngày kia A-bi-mê-léc, vua dân Phi-li-tin nhìn qua cửa sổ thấy Y-sác đang âu yếm Rê-be-ca. 9 A-bi-mê-léc gọi Y-sác hỏi, “Cô nầy là vợ anh, tại sao anh lại bảo là em gái?”
Y-sác đáp, “Tôi sợ rằng vua sẽ giết tôi để đoạt nàng.”
10 A-bi-mê-léc tiếp, “Ngươi đã làm gì cho chúng tôi vậy? Vì một người trong chúng tôi có thể ăn nằm với nàng, rồi tất cả chúng tôi đều mang trọng tội.”
11 A-bi-mê-léc liền cảnh cáo mọi người, “Ai đụng đến người nầy hay vợ người sẽ bị xử tử.”
Y-sác trở nên giàu có
12 Y-sác trồng trọt trong vùng đó, và năm ấy ông trúng mùa. Thượng Đế ban phước cho ông rất nhiều, 13 nên ông trở nên giàu có. Ông tạo ra nhiều của cải đến nỗi trở nên giàu sụ. 14 Y-sác có nhiều nô lệ và gia súc nên người Phi-li-tin ganh tức với ông. 15 Chúng lấp các giếng nước mà những tôi tớ của Áp-ra-ham, cha Y-sác, đã đào. Họ đào giếng nầy trong khi Áp-ra-ham còn sống. Người Phi-li-tin lấy đất lấp các giếng ấy lại. 16 A-bi-mê-léc bảo Y-sác, “Thôi, anh hãy ra khỏi xứ chúng tôi đi, vì anh đã trở nên hùng mạnh hơn chúng tôi.”
17 Vì thế Y-sác rời vùng ấy, dựng lều và định cư trong thung lũng Ghê-ra. 18 Trước đó khá lâu Áp-ra-ham đã cho đào nhiều giếng nước, nhưng sau khi ông qua đời người Phi-li-tin lấy đất lấp tất cả các giếng đó. Nên Y-sác cho đào các giếng đó lại và đặt tên như trước đây cha mình đã đặt. 19 Các người đầy tớ Y-sác đào một cái giếng trong thung lũng thì tìm được nước ngọt [a]. 20 Nhưng bọn chăn chiên ở Ghê-ra tranh dành với họ và bảo, “Giếng nầy của tụi tao.” Nên Y-sác gọi giếng đó là Ê-séc [b], vì chúng nó tranh dành với ông.
21 Rồi những người đầy tớ ông đào một giếng khác. Chúng cũng tranh giành nữa, nên Y-sác gọi giếng đó là giếng Sít-na [c].
22 Ông bỏ đó và đào một cái giếng khác nữa. Lần nầy không ai tranh dành, nên ông gọi giếng đó là Rê-hô-bốt [d]. Y-sác bảo, “Bây giờ CHÚA đã dành chỗ cho chúng ta, nên chúng ta sẽ phát đạt trong xứ nầy.”
23 Từ đó Y-sác dời qua Bê-e-sê-ba. 24 Đêm ấy, CHÚA hiện ra cùng ông và bảo, “Ta là Thượng Đế của Áp-ra-ham, cha con. Đừng sợ vì ta ở cùng con. Ta sẽ ban phước và cho con đông con cháu, vì cớ đầy tớ ta là Áp-ra-ham.” 25 Vậy Y-sác xây một bàn thờ và thờ lạy CHÚA tại đó. Ông cũng cho dựng lều tại đây. Các người đầy tớ ông đào một cái giếng.
26 A-bi-mê-léc từ Ghê-ra đến thăm Y-sác. Ông mang theo A-hu-giác, cố vấn của mình và Phi-côn, tư lệnh quân đội.
27 Y-sác hỏi họ, “Các ông đến thăm tôi làm gì? Các ông đã ganh ghét và đuổi tôi ra khỏi xứ các ông rồi mà.”
28 Họ đáp, “Bây giờ chúng tôi biết CHÚA ở cùng anh. Chúng ta hãy thề nguyền cùng nhau và lập ước giữa chúng tôi và anh. 29 Chúng tôi không làm hại gì cho anh, nên anh cũng sẽ không làm hại chúng tôi. Chúng tôi đối xử tốt với anh và để anh đi ra bình yên. Bây giờ CHÚA đã ban phước cho anh.”
30 Y-sác thết đãi họ, mọi người ăn uống vui vẻ. 31 Sáng sớm hôm sau họ thề nguyện cùng nhau. Y-sác tiễn họ lên đường rồi họ ra đi bình yên.
32 Hôm đó các người đầy tớ đến báo cáo về giếng họ đã đào, Họ báo, “Chúng tôi đã thấy nước trong giếng.” 33 Cho nên Y-sác gọi giếng ấy là Si-ba [e] và thành đó gọi là Bê-e-sê-ba cho đến ngày nay.
Ê-sau cưới vợ
34 Khi Ê-sau được 40 tuổi thì lấy hai vợ người Hê-tít tên là Giu-đít con của Bê-e-ri và Bát-sê-ma con của Ê-lôn. 35 Hai nàng dâu đó làm phiền lòng Y-sác và Rê-be-ca không ít.

26 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)
25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)
30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)
