Isaac and Abimelech
26 There was a famine in the land, besides (A)the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.
2 Then the Lord appeared to him and said: (C)“Do not go down to Egypt; live in (D)the land of which I shall tell you. 3 (E)Dwell in this land, and (F)I will be with you and (G)bless you; for to you and your descendants (H)I give all these lands, and I will perform (I)the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 And (J)I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; (K)and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 (L)because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
6 So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked about his wife. And (M)he said, “She is my sister”; for (N)he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is (O)beautiful to behold.” 8 Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, [a]showing endearment to Rebekah his wife. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’ ”
10 And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and (P)you would have brought guilt on us.” 11 So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who (Q)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year (R)a hundredfold; and the Lord (S)blessed him. 13 The man (T)began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous; 14 for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines (U)envied him. 15 Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells (V)which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for (W)you are much mightier than we.”
17 Then Isaac departed from there and [b]pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. (X)He called them by the names which his father had called them.
19 Also Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. 20 But the herdsmen of Gerar (Y)quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well [c]Esek, because they quarreled with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name [d]Sitnah. 22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name [e]Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall (Z)be fruitful in the land.”
23 Then he went up from there to Beersheba. 24 And the Lord (AA)appeared to him the same night and said, (AB)“I am the God of your father Abraham; (AC)do not fear, for (AD)I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake.” 25 So he (AE)built an altar there and (AF)called on the name of the Lord, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.
26 Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, (AG)and Phichol the commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, (AH)since you hate me and have (AI)sent me away from you?”
28 But they said, “We have certainly seen that the Lord (AJ)is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a [f]covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. (AK)You are now the blessed of the Lord.’ ”
30 (AL)So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 Then they arose early in the morning and (AM)swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 It came to pass the same day that Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it [g]Shebah. (AN)Therefore the name of the city is [h]Beersheba to this day.
34 (AO)When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 And (AP)they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

26 1-6 En aquel tiempo llegó a faltar comida en toda la región de Canaán, tal como había pasado en tiempos de Abraham. Era tan grave la falta de alimentos que Isaac pensó en irse a Egipto. Pero Dios se le apareció a Isaac y le dijo:
«No vayas a Egipto. Es mejor que te vayas por algún tiempo a Guerar, donde vive Abimélec, rey de los filisteos. Yo prometo estar siempre contigo, y bendecirte en todo. Además, a ti y a tus descendientes voy a darles todas estas tierras. Así cumpliré el juramento que le hice a tu padre Abraham. Voy a hacer que tus descendientes sean tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo. Por medio de ellos bendeciré a todas las naciones de la tierra, porque Abraham me obedeció y cumplió con todo lo que le ordené».
Fue así como Isaac fue a Guerar para hablar con Abimélec, y se quedó a vivir allá. 7 Cuando los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaban por Rebeca, él decía que era su hermana y no su esposa. Y es que tenía miedo, porque pensaba: «Rebeca es muy hermosa; los hombres de este lugar son capaces de matarme para quedarse con ella».
8 Un día, Abimélec estaba mirando desde su ventana, y vio que Isaac estaba acariciando a Rebeca. 9-10 Entonces lo mandó a llamar y le reclamó:
—¡Tú no me puedes engañar! ¡Esta mujer no es tu hermana, es tu esposa! ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? ¡Si alguno de mis hombres hubiera tenido relaciones sexuales con ella, tú nos habrías hecho culpables a todos!
Isaac se disculpó:
—Es que tuve miedo de que me mataran para quedarse con ella.
11 Enseguida Abimélec le ordenó a todo el pueblo:
—Cualquiera que moleste a este hombre o a su mujer, será condenado a muerte.
12 Ese mismo año, Dios le dio a Isaac una cosecha tan abundante, que produjo cien veces más de lo que había sembrado en aquella tierra. 13 Así ganó Isaac mucho dinero, y llegó a ser muy rico y poderoso. 14 Llegó a tener tantas ovejas y vacas, y tantos sirvientes, que despertó la envidia de los filisteos. 15 Por eso los filisteos taparon con tierra todos los pozos que Abraham había mandado abrir. 16 Hasta Abimélec llegó a decirle: «Vete de aquí, pues ya eres más poderoso que nosotros».
17 Isaac se fue de Guerar, pero se quedó a vivir en el valle. 18 Cuando Abraham aún vivía, había mandado abrir unos pozos allí, pero después de su muerte los filisteos los habían vuelto a tapar. Isaac volvió a abrirlos y les puso los mismos nombres que les había puesto su padre.
19 Un día, los sirvientes de Isaac estaban abriendo un pozo en el valle y descubrieron un manantial. 20 Pero los pastores de Guerar se pelearon con los pastores de Isaac, pues decían que esa agua les pertenecía. Por eso Isaac llamó a ese pozo «Pelea». 21 Hicieron otro pozo, pero también pelearon por él, por lo que Isaac le puso por nombre «Pleito». 22 Luego se alejó de allí y volvió a abrir otro pozo, y ya nadie peleó. Entonces lo llamó «Libertad», pues dijo: «Al fin Dios nos ha dado libertad para prosperar en este lugar».
23 De allí, Isaac se fue a otro lugar, que luego sería conocido como Beerseba. 24 Esa misma noche Dios se le apareció y le dijo: «Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham, y por él te voy a bendecir y a aumentar el número de tus descendientes. No tengas miedo, pues yo te ayudaré en todo».
25 Entonces Isaac hizo allí un altar para adorar a Dios. En ese mismo lugar plantó su tienda de campaña, y sus sirvientes abrieron otro pozo. 26 Cuando Abimélec lo supo, salió de Guerar para hablar con Isaac. Lo acompañaban Ahuzat, que era su consejero personal, y Ficol, jefe de su ejército. 27 Isaac les preguntó:
—¿Para qué vienen a verme, si me han tratado tan mal y hasta me echaron de su país?
28 Y ellos le contestaron:
—Ya hemos visto que Dios está de tu parte. Por eso queremos hacer un trato contigo. Y lo vamos a hacer, pero bajo juramento. 29 Nosotros nunca quisimos molestarte. Al contrario, siempre te tratamos bien y hasta nos despedimos como amigos. Ahora tú, comprométete a no hacernos ningún daño, ya que Dios te ha bendecido tanto.
30 Entonces Isaac les ofreció un banquete, y ellos comieron y bebieron. 31 A la mañana siguiente se levantaron muy temprano, y tanto Isaac como Abimélec juraron no hacerse ningún daño. Luego Isaac despidió a sus visitantes, y ellos se marcharon en paz.
32 Ese mismo día vinieron los sirvientes de Isaac y le dijeron que habían encontrado agua en el pozo que estaban abriendo. 33 A ese pozo Isaac le puso por nombre «Juramento», y hasta el día de hoy, la ciudad donde está ese pozo se llama Beerseba, que significa «Pozo del juramento».

34 Cuando Esaú tenía cuarenta años, se casó con Judit, que era hija de un hitita llamado Beerí. También se casó con Basemat, hija de otro hitita llamado Elón. 35 Estas dos mujeres llegarían a causarles muchos problemas a Isaac y a Rebeca.

2 At napakita ang Panginoon sa kaniya, at nagsabi, Huwag kang bumaba sa Egipto; (C)matira ka sa lupaing aking sasabihin sa iyo:
3 (D)Matira ka sa lupaing ito, (E)at ako'y sasa iyo, at ikaw ay aking pagpapalain; sapagka't sa iyo at sa iyong binhi ay (F)ibibigay ko ang lahat ng lupaing ito, (G)at pagtitibayin ko ang sumpang aking isinumpa kay Abraham na iyong ama;
4 At aking (H)pararamihin ang iyong binhi na gaya ng mga bituin sa langit, at ibibigay ko sa iyong binhi ang lahat ng lupaing ito: (I)at pagpapalain sa iyong binhi ang lahat ng bansa sa lupa;

8 At nangyari nang siya'y naroong mahabang panahon, na dumungaw si Abimelech, na hari ng mga Filisteo sa isang durungawan, at tumingin, at narito't si Isaac ay nakikipaglaro kay Rebeca na kaniyang asawa.
9 At tinawag ni Abimelech si Isaac, at sa kaniya'y sinabi, Narito, tunay na siya'y iyong asawa: at bakit sinabi mo, Siya'y aking kapatid? At sumagot sa kaniya si Isaac, Sapagka't sinabi ko, Baka ako'y mamatay dahil sa kaniya.
10 At sinabi ni Abimelech, Ano itong ginawa mo sa amin? hindi malayong ang sinoman sa bayan ay nakasiping sa iyong asawa, at sa gayon ay (N)pinapagkasala mo kami.
11 At ibinilin ni Abimelech sa buong bayan, na sinabi, (O)Ang gumalaw sa lalaking ito o sa kaniyang asawa ay tunay na papatayin.
12 At si Isaac ay naghasik sa lupaing yaon, at umani siya ng taong yaon, ng tigisang (P)daan (Q)at pinagpala siya ng Panginoon.
13 At naging dakila ang lalake at lalo't lalong naging dakila hanggang sa naging totoong dakila.
14 At siya'y may tinatangkilik na mga kawan, at mga tinatangkilik na mga bakahan, at malaking sangbahayan: at kinainggitan siya ng mga Filisteo.
15 Lahat ng mga balon ngang hinukay ng mga (R)bataan ng kaniyang ama, nang mga kaarawan ni Abraham na kaniyang ama, ay pinagtabunan ng mga Filisteo, na mga pinuno ng lupa.
16 At sinabi ni Abimelech kay Isaac; Humiwalay ka sa amin, (S)sapagka't ikaw ay makapupong matibay kay sa amin.
17 At umalis si Isaac doon, at humantong sa libis ng Gerar, at tumahan doon.
18 At muling hinukay ni Isaac ang mga balon ng tubig na kanilang hinukay nang mga kaarawan ni Abraham na kaniyang ama; sapagka't pinagtabunan ng mga Filisteo, pagkamatay ni Abraham: at kaniyang mga (T)pinanganlan ng ayon sa mga pangalang inilagay ng kaniyang ama.
19 At humukay sa libis ang mga bataan ni Isaac, at nangakasumpong doon ng isang balon ng tubig na bumubukal.
20 At (U)nakipagtalo ang mga pastor ni Gerar sa mga pastor ni Isaac, na sinasabi, Amin ang tubig; at kaniyang tinawag ang pangalan ng balon, na Esec; sapagka't ipinakipagkaalit sa kaniya.
21 At sila'y humukay ng ibang balon; at kanilang pinagtalunan din: at kaniyang tinawag ang pangalan na Sitnah.
22 At bumunot siya roon, at humukay ng ibang balon; at hindi nila pinagtalunan: at kaniyang tinawag ang pangalan na Rehoboth; at kaniyang sinabi, Sapagka't ngayo'y binigyan tayo ng Panginoon ng kaluwagan, at lalago tayo sa lupain.
23 At mula roon ay umahon siya sa Beer-seba.
24 At napakita sa kaniya ang Panginoon ng gabi ring yaon, at nagsabi, (V)Ako ang Dios ni Abraham na iyong ama: (W)huwag kang matakot, sapagka't (X)ako'y sumasaiyo, at ikaw ay aking pagpapalain, at aking pararamihin ang iyong binhi, alangalang kay Abraham na aking lingkod.
25 At si Isaac ay (Y)nagtayo roon ng isang dambana, at kaniyang sinambitla ang pangalan ng Panginoon, at itinindig niya roon ang kaniyang tolda: at humukay roon ang mga bataan ni Isaac ng isang balon.

26 Nang magkagayo'y si Abimelech ay naparoon sa kaniya mula sa Gerar, at si Ahuzath na kaniyang kaibigan, at si (Z)Phicol na kapitan ng kaniyang hukbo.
27 At sinabi sa kanila ni Isaac, Bakit kayo naparirito sa akin, dangang kayo'y nangapopoot sa akin (AA)at pinalayas ninyo ako sa inyo?
28 At sinabi nila, Malinaw na aming nakita, (AB)na ang Panginoon ay sumasaiyo: at aming sinabi, Magkaroon ng pagsusumpaan tayo, kami at ikaw at makipagtipan kami sa iyo:
29 Na hindi ka gagawa sa amin ng masama, gaya naman namin na hindi ka namin ginalaw, at wala kaming ginawa sa iyong di mabuti, at pinayaon ka naming payapa: ikaw ngayon ang (AC)pinagpala ng Panginoon.
30 At pinaghandaan niya sila, at sila'y nagkainan at naginuman.
31 At sila'y gumising ng madaling araw, (AD)at sila'y nagpanumpaan: at sila'y pinagpaalam ni Isaac, at nagsialis na payapa sa kaniya.
32 At nangyari, nang araw ding yaon, na nagsidating ang mga bataan ni Isaac, at siya'y binalitaan tungkol sa balon nilang hinukay, at sinabi sa kaniya, Nakasumpong kami ng tubig.
33 At tinawag niyang Seba:[a] (AE)kaya't ang pangalan ng bayang yaon ay Beer-seba[b] hanggang ngayon.
Mga asawa ni Esau.
34 At nang si Esau ay may apat na pung taon ay (AF)nagasawa kay Judit, na anak ni Beeri na Heteo, at kay Basemat na anak ni Elon na Heteo:
35 (AG)At sila'y nakasama ng loob kay Isaac at kay Rebeca.
