Cuando los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer, Isaac dijo: «Es mi hermana(A)»; porque tenía temor(B) de decir: «Es mi mujer». Porque pensaba: «no sea que los hombres del lugar me maten por causa de Rebeca, pues es de hermosa apariencia(C)». Y sucedió que después de haber estado ellos allí largo tiempo, Abimelec, rey de los filisteos, miró por una ventana y vio a Isaac acariciando a Rebeca su mujer.

Entonces Abimelec llamó a Isaac, y le dijo: «Ciertamente ella es tu mujer. ¿Por qué, pues, dijiste: “Es mi hermana”?». «Porque me dije: “No sea que yo muera por causa de ella”», respondió Isaac.

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(A)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(B) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(C)

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”

Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’ ”
