The Death of Abraham
25 Now Abraham took another wife, [a]whose name was Keturah. 2 (A)And she bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah. 3 Now Jokshan [b]was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. 4 And the sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah. 5 (B)And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; 6 but to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and he (C)sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.
7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life that he lived, (D)175 years. 8 And Abraham breathed his last and died (E)in a good old age, an old man and full of days; and he was (F)gathered to his people. 9 Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in (G)the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, 10 (H)the field which Abraham bought from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife. 11 Now it happened after the death of Abraham, that (I)God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac [c]lived by (J)Beer-lahai-roi.
The Generations of Ishmael
12 Now these are the generations of (K)Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant-woman, bore to Abraham; 13 and these are the names of (L)the sons of Ishmael, by their names, [d]in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam 14 and Mishma and Dumah and Massa, 15 Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; (M)twelve princes according to their [e]tribes. 17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael, (N)137 years; and he breathed his last and died and was (O)gathered to his people. 18 And they dwelt from (P)Havilah to (Q)Shur which is [f]east of Egypt [g]as one goes toward Assyria; (R)he [h]settled in the face of all his brothers.
The Generations of Isaac
19 Now these are (S)the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham [i]became the father of Isaac; 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took (T)Rebekah, the (U)daughter of Bethuel the [j]Aramean of Paddan-aram, the (V)sister of Laban the [k]Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac entreated Yahweh on behalf of his wife because she was barren; and (W)Yahweh [l]was moved by his entreaty. So Rebekah his wife (X)conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to (Y)inquire of Yahweh. 23 And Yahweh said to her,
“(Z)Two nations are in your womb;
(AA)And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people shall be stronger than the other;
And (AB)the older shall serve the younger.”
24 And her days to give birth were fulfilled, and behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came forth red, (AC)all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came forth with (AD)his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so (AE)his name was called [m]Jacob; and Isaac was (AF)sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
Esau Sells His Birthright
27 And the boys grew up; Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a [n]peaceful man, [o](AG)living in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because [p]he had (AH)an appetite for hunted game, (AI)but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob had cooked (AJ)stew. And Esau came in from the field, and he was [q]famished. 30 Then Esau said to Jacob, “Please give me a swallow from the red stuff—[r]this red stuff, for I am [s]famished.” Therefore his name was called [t]Edom. 31 But Jacob said, “[u]First sell me your (AK)birthright.” 32 And Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “[v]First swear to me”; so he swore to him and (AL)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 So Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank and rose and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Other Descendants of Abraham(A)
25 Abraham married another woman, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan, and the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were Keturah's descendants.
5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac; 6 but while he was still alive, he gave presents to the sons his other wives had borne him. Then he sent these sons to the land of the East, away from his son Isaac.
The Death and Burial of Abraham
7-8 Abraham died at the ripe old age of 175. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in Machpelah Cave, in the field east of Mamre that had belonged to Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10 (B)It was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; both Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried there. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near “The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me.”
The Descendants of Ishmael(C)
12 Ishmael, whom Hagar, the Egyptian slave of Sarah, bore to Abraham, 13 had the following sons, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 They were the ancestors of twelve tribes, and their names were given to their villages and camping places. 17 Ishmael was 137 years old when he died. 18 The descendants of Ishmael lived in the territory between Havilah and Shur, to the east of Egypt on the way to Assyria. They lived apart from the other descendants of Abraham.
The Birth of Esau and Jacob
19 This is the story of Abraham's son Isaac. 20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebecca, the daughter of Bethuel (an Aramean from Mesopotamia) and sister of Laban. 21 Because Rebecca had no children, Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. The Lord answered his prayer, and Rebecca became pregnant. 22 She was going to have twins, and before they were born, they struggled against each other in her womb. She said, “Why should something like this happen to me?” So she went to ask the Lord for an answer.
23 (D)The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are within you;
You will give birth to two rival peoples.
One will be stronger than the other;
The older will serve the younger.”
24 The time came for her to give birth, and she had twin sons. 25 The first one was reddish, and his skin was like a hairy robe, so he was named Esau.[a] 26 The second one was born holding on tightly to the heel of Esau, so he was named Jacob.[b] Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
Esau Sells His Rights as the First-Born Son
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter, a man who loved the outdoors, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. 28 Isaac preferred Esau, because he enjoyed eating the animals Esau killed, but Rebecca preferred Jacob.
29 One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry 30 and said to Jacob, “I'm starving; give me some of that red stuff.” (That is why he was named Edom.[c])
31 Jacob answered, “I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son.”
32 Esau said, “All right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do me?”
33 (E)Jacob answered, “First make a vow that you will give me your rights.”
Esau made the vow and gave his rights to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave him some bread and some of the soup. He ate and drank and then got up and left. That was all Esau cared about his rights as the first-born son.

19 This is the (U)genealogy of Isaac, Abraham’s son. (V)Abraham begot Isaac. 20 Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, (W)the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, (X)the sister of Laban the Syrian. 21 Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; (Y)and the Lord granted his plea, (Z)and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” (AA)So she went to inquire of the Lord.
23 And the Lord said to her:

33 Then Jacob said, [h]“Swear to me as of this day.”
So he swore to him, and (AO)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then (AP)he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau (AQ)despised his birthright.
